You also give me motivation to do the same thing with my progens. They're not gened either because of putting it off and for agonizing "the PERFECT genes that suit their personality in every conceivable way", and such genes have not been invented yet.

i guess i'd say impa would be gen 3 if the generations start with wilt (the starter dragon for this challenge) being 0, making her the great-granddaughter of wilt and the great-great-granddaughter of my progens. here's her full lineage, starting with my progens, with the underlined names being the official heirs for each generation:

I've also decided that since we're already up to rare breeds only, and there are only 2 possibilities to choose from, I'll select a mate of whichever breed that the heir [i]isn't[/i], so that way we still have the possibility of 5-egg nests. So, for this time, since the heir was a wildclaw, I picked a coatl for the mate! Just figured I'd mention it, since this'll be the plan until we finish the challenge (unless I change my mind).

Does it get harder each generation to find a non-related mate of the desired genes and ballpark colors? Just window shopping shows it gets increasingly expensive with each tier if a desired mate has only 2 of the 3 correct genes.

the difficulty actually doesn't change too much each generation since the way that i did my challenge, i'm always looking for a dragon with each of the three genes (and the breed) being a specific rarity. i didn't wait to get an heir with all three genes of the next tier up, i treated each slot separately (so, for example, if i had an heir that was an uncommon breed with a common primary, limited secondary, and uncommon tertiary, i'd look for a mate of a limited breed with an uncommon primary, rare secondary, and limited tertiary, moving each slot up one rarity level), which means each time i was looking for an heir with around the same specificity.
the numbers fluctuate a bit from tier to tier (you can see in the charts from this thread that i use to create the ah searches), and the prices do increase slightly as the genes get rarer, but not a hugely significant amount! i also decided to select mates by searching for the necessary genes/breed/gender, filtering by ready-to-breed, and grabbing the cheapest dragon available for treasure (after checking it in assay bloodlines with the heir) because i think the random aspect is fun, so the colors i get just depend on luck. i can usually find something good for less than 15kt!
