Captive Side

Days and nights blurred together in this perpetually darkened wasteland, bringing no comfort to those within. Food was scarce, the threats numerous, and the sleep exhausting. Yet slowly but surely, Dhamballah was starting to become more familiar with the lands.

Dawn and dusk were the safest times to travel, for most creatures within the woods took these brief moments to regain their strength. A few berry bushes were scattered in the south-western regions, surrounding a massive, murky lake, the surface of which covered the lands like a slimey blanket. Drinking from it was an unpleasant necessity, and best done quick, lest the lifeforms lurking beneath decided to hunt.

And if some unfettered monster should stampede through the forest, well, it was best to stay quiet and keep out of its way. Roosting in the trees brought a mild sense of safety in these instances, so long as he didn’t stray too far up. Beneath were the plague-ridden beasts; above, the tree-dwelling harpies. Trapped between two enemies wasn’t exactly the perfect solution, but it was better than being mauled by either of them.

He lost one of the hatchlings in those weeks it took him to get used to the life in the underworld. The wyrm was snatched by some beast—Dham hadn’t looked. He didn’t want to see it. Though some passing emotion gripped his chest, he knew he had to keep moving. He had to survive, and find a way out of this place.

The magical barrier surrounding the prison grounds was an almost imperceptibly pale shade of pink, hovering high above the treeline. He stopped by the stone walls whenever he felt he could afford the risk, and the magic gently humming within them seemed to mock him. Were he in his best shape, perhaps he could do it. Gather just enough energy to make a small hole to escape through and never, ever look back.

But he was weak, half-starved and driven to madness. If his captors thought he was mad when in his workshop, they certainly wouldn’t want to see the state of him now. Yet this must’ve been a part of their design: life in here was survivable, but only just. The lucky ones died early on, mangled by some beast or dragon, or else taken by disease. The unlucky ones, like him, lived on in a state of perpetual weakness, too enfeebled to resist their captivity.

No matter. Dham refused to just lie down and die. It went against everything he believed in.

His last hatchling—Rossiter—grew up quickly, despite everything. The idea still disturbed him on some level. He was a scientist, an inventor, a thinker. But he was never supposed to be a father! The only things he was interested in raising were his mechanical creations.

dragon?did=92446488&skin=0&apparel=12897,27766,22848&xt=dressing.png

But there was something that caught his eye about the young Pearlcatcher. As he grew up, it became more and more apparent to Dham that his son had a great affinity for magic. Where Dham had spent many years studying and training to control his magic, Ross accessed his innately. It seemed to flow within him as easily as blood, so much so that Dham could’ve sworn he could see the very air around him swell and shift.

So one day Dhamballah found a quiet spot for them and said, “Listen to me. Your magic—I’m going to teach you how to use it.”

The training itself was fine, she supposed, but she wasn’t used to having nobody to play around with. Back home, she could toss and tumble with the other hatchlings (and get the satisfaction of violently bringing them down), but here, it was just her and the ever composed Aberration. Lailyn was starting to regret being picked for the Seeker training. At least with the normal class, she’d get to have plenty of dragons to bully. “Hurry it up over there,” Amethyst called over her shoulder at them. Lailyn reluctantly trailed after the Nocturne. After a few steps, she was so lost in thought that she ended up bumping into Irirangi. “Hey! Why’d you stop?” she complained, before realising that Amethyst had come to a stop as well. Then, another dragon caught her eye. The Imperial was covered in silks and robes, and a gentle sound the likes of a bell echoed with each of his steps. His pale eyes peered from underneath his hood, briefly turning their way. “Greetings,” Amethyst addressed him, giving him a nod. The Imperial returned it silently, before continuing on his way without a word. Lailyn watched the whole thing with wide eyes. “Whoa,” she muttered. “Who was that?” “That’s Xannan, the Priest. He’s one of the Watchers,” Amethyst responded, resuming their travel. “Oh… The most boring ones? The ones who just sit around and do nothing all day? Pfft…” Amethyst glared at Lailyn over her shoulder. “Do not speak disrespectfully of your superiors!” “But you don’t like them either! You said they’re all pompous snakes!” the Spiral argued defensively. “I said, do not speak disrespectfully of them. At least, not when they can hear you,” Amethyst replied grudgingly. “We may not get along… But I don’t need you and your blabbering mouth getting me into trouble.” Lailyn smirked. “No promises.” After a moment of silence, Irirangi uncharacteristically spoke up first. “What does a ‘priest’ do?” “It’s mostly a title, held by the highest-ranking Watchers. They’re highly skilled magicians, and they’re the ones sustaining the barrier around the prison. Supposedly, Xannan himself also claims that he can see the future.” Amethyst rolled her eyes. “Wow! Really?” Lailyn asked in wonderment. “Who knows. Regardless, you’d better stay out of his way. You’re a long way off from being able to speak with someone like him,” Amethyst admonished, casting the Spiral a brief glare. “Hmm…” Lailyn paused, glancing over her shoulder. She watched as the Imperial walked up the massive doors of the main headquarters. The two guards on either side of them quickly lowered their heads, allowing him to enter without a word. Only once he’d disappeared within and the gates closed behind him again, did the dragons relax and exchange a nervous glance with each other. “Lailyn!” At the sound of Amethyst’s irritated voice calling from up ahead, the Spiral hurriedly snapped out of her thoughts and chased after her. “Bet I could outrun you in a race!”

“Maybe so.”

“And I bet I could do the obstacle course faster than you!”

“Certainly.”

“I’m definitely stronger than you too!”

“Perhaps.”

Lailyn sighed. No matter how hard she tried, Irirangi seemed utterly impossible to agitate. It wasn’t even that Lailyn wanted to be mean, but this whole thing was so boring. The training itself was fine, she supposed, but she wasn’t used to having nobody to play around with.
