Woo, new lore challenge is a GO! Well, I say that, but this is going to be a lot more relaxed than some of my others. Just a little scrap of lore description here and there to keep things vibrant and interesting for myself and whoever stops by to read :D
As it says at the top, this is a Breed Out the Ugly Challenge! However, I'm using the Randomized ruleset from @/Kywren for a bit of extra challenge :D I was also inspired by @/MelanIllustrates, whose challenge I stumbled across first!

I will start with a bank of 20kt.

The first dragon must be from my least favorite breed onsite, and be all basic genes. It needs to be ugly; truly a dragon that should have been immediately exalted. It needs to be under 10kt.

Then I need to find it a mate! It needs to be RTB, and under 10kt. I'll roll a [s]d20[/s] d[# of pages within price limit] to determine the page to pick the mate from and then roll a d10 to chose the mate from that page. There's no requirement for triple genes.

Next, I'll breed them! I'll determine the heir in one of three ways, also determined by a roll. On a roll of 1, I'll let RNG choose the heir. On a roll of 2, I get to choose the heir. On a roll of 3, I toss 'em into the Coli LoW style and see who walks away the victor.

While waiting for the heir to be ready to breed, I'll train and exalt or sell the others in order to fill back up my bank and pay for the next dragon.

My next dragon, and every dragon following that I get as a mate, must only be bought with money in the bank. I must still roll a d20 (or lower) to determine the page, but I will get to pick from there.

No scrying workshop until after the mate is purchased!

The challenge is done when a pair produces a dragon I want to have in my lair as a permanent member.

The clan is composed of various legacies, or families, which typically descend from newcomers to the island who choose to stay and dedicate themselves to the clan. These legacies interact with one another in a large, codependent clan, with each member contributing skills of hunting, craftsmanship, or knowledge to one another readily. They are presided over by a loose priest-leader who is responsible for enforcing the clan's sparse rules and training a small group of historians and spiritualists who will maintain tradition in the next generation.
[columns]When a dragon washes up on Everglade's shores, they have two choices: to stay for a time and depart once they recover from their stranding, or to undergo a ritual and dedicate themselves to becoming part of the clan. Those who opt for the ritual usually seal their intentions with the foundation of their own personal legacy. If they have become close to one of the unmated islanders, they may select that dragon as their founding partner; otherwise, non-heirs from other legacies will often approach the dragon with proposals until one is eventually selected. The pair will then have a nest to cement their connection and establish their legacy.
From each nest in a legacy, one hatchling is selected through specific rites to become the legacy's heir. This hatchling receives special training and is eventually sent away from the island to seek out a mate of their very own, whom they must then bring back to the island. In order to locate Everglade again once they have left it, these heirs must be in-tune with its unique magic; if an heir is not properly trained, a legacy may be abruptly ended by their failure to return with a partner. Those who succeed in their quest will lay a nest with their found mate and begin the cycle anew, selecting an heir to continue the legacy in much the same way.
Non-heirs are still valued members of the clan, providing the everyday labor and skill which heirs may be unable to pursue. As it usually happens when you put two intellectual dragons in a room, a rapport between herself and Thicknose was quick to develop. Day Two in which we select a mate
______
With Dawnwinter acquired, all that's left to get this challenge kicked off is a mate for her! I'm off to the AH to see what RNG decides.
My d20 decided page eleven was the place to go. However, there were mostly ancients there, so I opted to roll again. The dice told me to move a single page over to twelve, which was in much better shape for what we want to do. Then, I took a d10 and discovered that number six was her delightful match. Or, as I found out, not so delightful...
[columns][emoji=old parchment size=1][nextcol]__[nextcol]Dawnwinter's ears were full of unsubtle whispers when she finally ventured from the healer's hut. Under the careful claws of Thicknose and his senior physicians, she had regained a great deal of health and had every intention of exploring the island. After all, who knew what sort of creatures would call this place home? It would be the opportunity of a lifetime! But the islanders seemed to expect something more from her, and she would be lying if she claimed she had no clue what it was.
Thicknose had kindly explained the basic structure of linages to her, as well as where a so-called "Lost One" like herself fit into those lineages, but she wasn't entirely sure how to feel about such a concept. The idea of staying on the island on a more...permanent basis was alluring, but did she wish to take on the culture and traditions of the place alongside a long-term residence? She wasn't sure.
Thicknose played tour guide as she mulled over her options. To stay without founding a lineage wasn't forbidden, but, as Thicknose explained, such dragons usually found themselves in the priesthood instead. What she lacked in motherly instinct was a wealth in comparison to her piety, so she didn't favor that route in the least. There was a chance she could stubbornly avoid both, but Thicknose warned that such dragons were often treated coldly for their unwillingness to accept a place in the clan's tradition.
And the only other alternative was to leave, abandoning a lifetime of scientific discovery alongside the island. Not to mention Thicknose, who had no desire at all to leave the home he'd always known. Despite herself, she'd come to like the fidgety mirror, and the concept of losing him, too, was not as small a factor in the decision as she'd pictured it to be.
In the end, she chose the path of least resistance. As she and Thicknose tromped back towards her temporary residence on the beach, she asked,
"So, how does one found a legacy?"
*
The next few days were a whirlwind, filled with celebrations, feasts, and rituals of all kinds. Though she could have opted into far fewer of these events, there was something nice about socializing and learning the ways of the island, especially after being cooped up in a not-so-large hut on the beach for well over a month. It was a bit like making scientific discoveries again, and for that she was glad.
As soon as it seemed like a lull was on the horizon, proposals began to find their way to her camp in Tradewinds Town. Young dragons from various other lineages, who hadn't been selected to carry on their line for another generation, offered to partner with her as she looked into establishing her own. She turned them all down with increasing annoyance, because she already had a dragon in mind.
Said dragon, flustered by her initial admission of interest, had made himself quite scarce, but, as Dawnwinter began work on a permanent hut, he finally reappeared to answer her question. Thicknose had never pictured himself as part of a lineage when he had failed to be selected as heir, much less with a dragon whom he admired a great deal. Though quite bashful with the thought, he agreed to be her mate, and they set off for the Roost the next day.
I just realized that these two should most definitely be on a Wind nest rather than a Lightning one, but shh we don't talk about that. Maybe Dawnwinter thought it would be a nice way to pay homage to the land she was traveling to when she became stranded. Either way, the pair are sitting on a healthy three-egg nest! Fingers crossed for some babs with decent colors :D
