yes!! usually just a cheap gene or two, but it's now pretty much tradition for me to change at least one thing about every dragon I buy
sometimes I have projects and use a bunch of genes on a random dragon though, because doing the project on a g1 would be impossible or ludicrously expensive
my clearest example is probably Regis, she used to be a spiral with 100% different genes and eye type! but I wanted a dragon with those colours, and a g1 with those colours would be unobtainable, so I happily used a random g2+ :D

as for gem genes... it's rare, but sometimes yeah. see this random dragon that I gave constellation:

although I probably wouldn't do that again lmao
the only other g2+ I plan to give a gem gene to is this one, who is going to get a veilspun scroll! her scry was one of my very first dream dragons, and these colours are not on any veilspuns on the site, so I will eventually do this :)

i like to gene my progen offspring! they're all either triple basics or just with an underbelly, but it kinda makes it more fun. they hold a lot of sentimental value to me, kinda even better than g1s.

Yea, multiple!
My first year on the site I wanted to hatch a triple emerald (my name!) dragon on my birthday. She got the full gem gene combo with my fave tert at the time.

Also have a couple of pairs of crystal/facet ancients where I just bred moderns for the color and gave them the genes after a breed change scroll. Here's one from each pair

Im doing a project now that's going to involve me buying gem gene terts as well.

I gene anything that will look good enough to be worth the effort, but that's more likely to be G2+ than G1 because they start off needing three which is prohibitively expensive, and often have the most appalling mismatch of colours. Unless it has a really good combo of colours, eyes etc. I'd rather just sell it for someone else to deal with, honestly. I don't get the hoopla over G1s. They're just basic, randomly coloured dragons with no interesting lineage, whose eggs got abandoned and picked up by a scavenger... sorry, I know that's sacrilege on this site! [emoji=guardian tongue size=1]
I'm also perfectly happy to overwrite someone else's hard-won gem gene with a common gene if I think it looks better! They can always breed more, that's how I got hold of it in the first place. It's definitely about the looks for me, and originality, not how well it will breed/sell. I find I'm always wanting combinations that nobody else seems to be doing, so I just have to jump through hoops breed changing, geneing and breeding until I get the dragon I want! Generation isn't relevant to that process.
I also am guilty of scrying the fodder, I should not be allowed near the AH because instead of picking up fodder to train, I end up rescuing them XD

I collect brown range obelisks which aren't commonly found on ah or hatcheries in general (cries) so I often buy/breed dragon with colors I need, then use scrolls [emoji=normal eyes size=1] here's some I gened recently !

The only non gen 1 dragons I own are 'special' (like, 5 digits etc) so yeah I do gene them. I have no price limit on them too, I'll happily triple gem gene + wildclaw a dragon if that's what I want.

She/Her | PM me about saving a fodder dragon :)

There is no difference between G1s and any other dragon as far asI'm concerned. I only care about getting the dragons I want.

Absolutely. I've spent far too many gems on them. Examples of G2+ dragons I've gened:
