All pvp is completely optional! The only "mandatory" pvp is the pageant, where you enter a wolf and then vote for other wolves throughout the week, so it's more like dragon share than pvp imo. The pageant functions as a check-in system to give you a daily allotment of premium currency shards regardless of how your wolf places. I suppose if you aren't interested in that you could also just ignore it entirely (note that if you ignore you would also miss out on one of the first daily quests that awards shards+weekly tickets).
The only other pvp aspect is the Arena, which doesn't use your pets at all, and instead works as a deck-builder game where all players in the match build a team from a random pool of cards. I really enjoy this aspect, because the random nature means you can play around with different teams and strategies but are always on an equal field because everyone is playing from the same pool. Arena doesn't have any little quests associated with it either; the only reason to do it would be for the couple of exclusive apparel/companions, which you could also buy off other people if it's really not your jam. I would recommend giving it a try, because if nothing else it's a great way to get familiar with the synergy system and auto/charge attacks, which can help with coming up with viable pve builds (there's a LOT more possibilities than FR's glass cannon).

I really wish that there was more cross-site trading alive with places other than FR. I don't care about Lorwolf, but I do care about Goatlings, and right now, it seems that nobody on either site wants to trade Moonstones for Sugar Stars, so I'm considering converting the MS into gems and then back into Sugar Stars. I don't understand how Chicken Smoothie, where you can't even DO anything with the pets, has active exchange with LW and Goatlings doesn't. Maybe they're just different demographics?
