Or the devs just changed that particular piece of lore, which is something that has been happening quite a lot recently. Just because that post is older doesn't make it any more canon than their more recent statement, quite the opposite in fact.
Really though, this was clearly just Undel making a silly joke [emoji=tundra laughing size=1] Reducing familiar has always just been a game mechanic that has some unintended implications if you think about it too hard, there's no deep dark truth behind it.
