World Info
Town name: Silverdrop Meadow or Silverdrop
Landscape: A small town that is situated in a meadow. Rivers flow throughout the town and at times it will become flooded. As such, most houses are built on small pillars to keep them from getting flooded. Surrounding the town is a peaceful forest, it's filled with trails for walking through. The rivers go through the forest as well.
It's a very rural area, lots of farmland due to the amount of water. Roads are still paved and there is modern technology. Bridges go over most rivers. Many small ponds have formed randomly due to the flooding. There are a few lakes too. Trees are sparse in the meadow; most are fruit trees in the orchid. The ones in town were planted by humans. Most other trees are in the forest.
Native trees include oak, birch, willow (these are found by lakes or water), fruit trees (cherry, apple, peach, etc.), and some flowering trees.
The reason it is called Silverdrop meadow is because the grass has silver seeds. When they are all bloomed, the meadow basically turns silver.
Weather: It stays at a constant spring-summer temperature. Not overly hot but not cold; it's either short sleeves and shorts or some pants and a light jacket. It never snows (except for that one time when an ice sprite got lost) and is always either sunny or raining; rainbows are commonly spotted.
Magic: Magic is believed in and is evident in this world. Woodland spirits can be seen in the woods and the occasional water sprite might appear during flooding. Magical creatures are also there, but are often left alone.
A variety of sentient magical beings live in the town, although humans still outnumber them. Among these are Selkies, elves, and more. These beings typically have some sort of magical ability, but not all do.
Having the ability to use magic is rare. Those other than humans typically have some sort of magical ability, but humans do not. Instead they use a thing called blessings.
Blessings: Blessings are gifts from sprites, magical creatures, or even the elements themselves. Blessings appear as some sort of charm and give the user some sort of magical ability, though the strength of this depends on who gave the blessing. For example a blessing from a woodland sprite could give you the ability to talk to animals, one from a unicorn could improve your luck, and one from an element could let you summon and control that element.
Blessings sell for a good price and people are constantly searching for ones. However, most people keep their blessings and save them as a sort of family heirloom. Those of higher classes typically are the ones who have blessings, especially multiples, although everyone has an equal change.
Spirit Bound: There is another way for humans to use magic, although it is something you have to be born with. Every now and then a spirit will bind itself to a human. These spirits typically represent one of the elements or some sort of natural event. When a human hosts a spirit, they gain access to the spirit's magic and can use it as if it were their own.
However, there is no way to tell if you, or someone else, has a spirit. The only way is for the spirit to reveal themselves to the host; once this happens the spirit and the human's soul merge, creating a bond. These humans are often referred to as spirit bound.
Spirits themselves often take on the appearance of whatever element they represent. Their top half is vaguely human like while their bottom half is a stream of whatever element they are. All spirits have names and separate personalities. When spirit bound, these personality traits may rub off on the host; the host may also take the name of a spirit. Spirits are all gender neutral, although they may favor one orientation over the other. Spirits reproduce by doing a form of mitosis, however the newly created spirit is only a copy of the element, they will develop their own personality. The copies of spirits also don’t have as much power as the original.
Elements: Elements are very important to the people in silverdrop meadow. Spirits who represent these elements are highly respected and often seen as beings of power. In this world they are often tied with religion. Typically, those who are spirit bound become religious figures. The main element that the people of silvedrop meadow value is water, with earth following behind. A statue of the first water spirit is in the center of town, it sits on a fountain and is often used as a wishing well so the bottom is littered with coins.
Those who are spirit bound are highly respected, even if they aren’t religious figures. However, this also means that spirit bound are sought out by people, believing that the spirits can solve their problems. However, the spirits that bind with humans are typically not ones of high power, they are weaker than what people believe them to be and as such spirit bound who have no religious status often hid their spirit.
Traditions: Silverdrop meadow has many traditions and special holidays throughout the year. In the beginning of spring, there is a water festival which is held to ensure water for the crops. Towards the end of summer, there is an earth festival which celebrates the harvest and ensures that more successful ones will be there in the future. During these festivals people try to summon the first spirits, or at least a high ranking spirit, of whatever element is being celebrated. If one does appear, it is customary for that spirit to give a blessing to whoever called it to the festival. Typically at least one spirit will appear per year at one of the festivals, although not all of them are high ranking.
