It's only the upcoming (2016-2017) ones and any after that (plus the crowns, which we already knew were not retiring). Sprites and this year's fest items... all the stuff they said would not come back... is not coming back.

I suppose in my horror I missed that part. Thank you for clarifying. If the past festival stuff is included, then I am gone. But if not, then I might linger still.

I WANT to like the idea of the new chest... except that, as a familiar collector, I'm very much against chest-exclusive familiar recolors that will get harder and harder to obtain as time passes. I've already struggled through getting the sprites and bears over the last year (and you better believe I feel burned for spending 100kt+ on each bear before it was decided they would be cycled in NotN last year) and I haven't yet been able to even think about the downtime familiars, let alone KS exclusives...
And now you want collectors like me to have to save up even MORE for multiple recolors that will be significantly more difficult to obtain than the originals as time passes (and you're reinforcing that time passage by limiting purchase of these chests to once per festival)? With a new recolor being added every month? How is this supposed to avoid the "virtually unattainable items" problem again?
Please, tell me I'm misinterpreting something.

They aren't bringing the old familiars back, they're going to only do this for future familiars/items-- Aka most things would just be Very Strictly cycled.
I had the same worry as you at first but they didn't break their retirement process, they didn't promise us that they were retiring all future fest items. That would have meant the crowns and the bears were meant for retirement also
