so i'm attempting to make an accent but i can't figure out how to make a clipping mask or even how to use one, how do they work? do they work on an empty layer or do i need to copy over linework and shading layers?

is the thing where you can't color outside the lines even called a clipping mask? i honestly have no clue, all of this is new to me

@Shinyumbreon
In FireAlpaca, there will be three checkboxes under the layer opacity and blending options, the middle one named "clipping". The other two are not important.
With a clipping mask, the layer that has the clipping box marked will only be able to show on the layer below it. You can put whatever you want on this clipping mask, from simple colors to shrek faces, but whatever is on the clipping mask will only show on the layer below.
No, they do not work on empty layers, and you would have to separate the linework and shading layers if you wanted to have lineart and shading to be different colors.
Hopefully i explained it well enough :">

Under the picture of the image you're editing, there should be a checkbox that says "Clipping." check that and it will clip to the layer below it. Hope that works for you?

@Amyatzu @maranak i tried doing what you guys said but it still isn't working, both shadow clip and linework clip have clipping masks on but i can still color outside of them. also i'm a bit confused as to what you meant by "it will only be able to show on the layer below it" to add, i have no plans on changing the colors of the shadows, save for the designs on top of them. @Shinyumbreon I'll add pictures in a few minutes but i'll try and troubleshoot (?? is that the word) your problem. The order that you're putting your layers in makes it so the clipping mask will only show on layer 17. If you want your accent to show on the linework and shadow, then you'd have to move the Accent Goes Here layer above the Linework and Shadow Clips. edit: I have a picture now yay then again, this probably is all still very vague :"> although... I know this is probably a bad idea, but do you want to send me the file? What you're experiencing could probably be different than what i'm thinking you are, and it'd help if i could see the actual file instead of having to guess through a screenshot (i can PM you my email if you wish).

@maranak the files are downloaded from the custom skins section over to the left (here), and i'm not allowed to color on the lineart or shadows (heck i don't even think i'm supposed to rearrange the layers), i can only color on the "accent goes here" layer, both lineart and shadows have protect alpha and clipping already on all i'm trying to do is make sure this overlapping doesn't happen, since i want to use an airbrush without going outside the lines

@ShinyUmbreon

Copy the base layer from the skin area, and drag it up to be below the "Accent goes here" area. Then turn clipping on. See if that works?

@Shinyumbreon what Amyatzu said does work, but if you're not allowed to rearrange the layers, then here's something else you can do: alright, so you have your dragon (i'm using medibang which is essentially firealpaca but DARK AND EDGY and with the gif function removed). He looks cool and good, and is ready for your accent. Draw it on him; it doesn't matter if you draw outside the lines or not. Now, you select the Base Layer of the Skin Parts folder, and select the magic wand tool. When this tool is selected, there will be a dropdown labeled reference at the top. Please change the reference from canvas -> layer, so that the wand will only select the stuff drawn on the layer you have selected. you probably already know most of this stuff already, but i'll say it again just in case :"> From here, you can move back up to the Accent layer (the selected parts will only unselect when you press Ctrl+D) and invert (Ctrl+Shift+I) your selection, erasing as needed. You can adjust the size of your selection through the select dropdown at the very top of the program. Expand will make the selected areas bigger, and contract will do the opposite. (I usually contract by three pixels so that the lineart hides where the accent has been erased) [s]this is such a long post im so sorry[/s] Adjust as necessary, then erase the accent part that is not covered by the blue unselection. If you need to move to other parts of the body, unselect, then move to the Base Layer again, select, invert if needed, move back to the accent layer, adjust, erase, etc. hopefully this helped! good luck on your accent!!!
