As of right now there are 26 dragon breeds, but I was wondering what the future holds? The past new dragons breeds have all been of Ancient rarity, and we only have 1 more to go to finish out all the elements. So I was wondering if there will be more dragon breeds released after the last Ancient breed is dropped? Will they go the same route for the rest of the rarities? I personally would love to see each element get 1 dragon breed per rarity, but I can understand if they don't want to go down that route. After all, it is a lot of work to design new dragon breeds and come up with their lore.

What I bet takes the most work for modern dragons is redrawing/resizing every single clothing item to fit. That's likely why every dragon recently released has been Ancient.
If we do get more modern dragons, they would likely be released more slowly.

We did get Fathoms just last year on the anniversary, the first new modern breed since Obelisks in 2021!
I believe staff is doing their best to balance out the breed releases so they're still able to release new modern breeds on some kind of reasonable timeline. It's an unfortunate truth that every new modern breed has an exponentially higher barrier to creation, as every apparel item and modern gene must be modified to work for the new breed. And then every new apparel item and new gene must also work for the breed... and this number gets higher and higher every time.
They've talked about this before, the plan is likely to continue breed releases for the forseeable future. I'm sure long-term they're going for at least two Ancients per flight eventually, as well as two moderns per flight.
I know they're also trying to balance the rarities, with rarity being one of the reasons Light flight has had two breeds to its name for so long (EDIT: since the beginning, ahaha) since just the Imperials would be a bit unfair.

Our most recent moderns are still under a year old, so I wouldn't be expecting another for at least a handful more years. As said above, that's mainly due to the ever-growing collection of apparel and genes. But mostly apparel.
I don't know if the devs have said anything about other rarities for ancients, but so far they've all been the same rarity. Maybe that's because we're still going for one of each flight first, and next they might do the next rarity?
Whatever they choose, I personally hope they don't ever stop giving us more ancients. I love them so much and even if we end up with 1000 breeds, I'll be having a grand time with each one! (I know this is unrealistic, they eventually will have to slow down and that day will be the day I'm very sad)

I feel we're less likely to get ancients compared to moderns due to the fact that ancients don't need apparel whereas EVERY piece of apparel must be redrawn to fit a new modern breed. So making a new modern breed would take MUCH longer than an ancient breed would.

A long while ago during a stream staff showed work on porting the Royal Cape to several modern breeds, including ones that weren't released yet. 2 spots were completely covered in black, and those spots turned out to (possibly) be Obelisks and Fathoms. I can't find the screenshot to confirm my suspicions but I'm sure someone that has it will post it.
Anyway, what I'm saying is that all the new breeds featured in that screenshot were part of the same development cycle. That's why Fathoms released so soon after Obelisks; they had roughly the same development time. And now that all the breeds featured in that Royal Cape image have been released, now its time for a new development cycle with new moderns, which may take 3-5 years per breed depending on how many they're working on at once + the amount of genes and apparel that need to be ported.
Moderns and Ancients are worked on by separate teams so that they don't impact each other's development. That's why Obelisks and Fathoms were released in the middle of this first wave of Ancients.
And you'll notice that I said "first wave". That's because there's going to me more Ancients after this first wave. Maybe more elemental Ancients, maybe some unaligned/neutral Ancients (like Bogsneaks). I believe staff want to aim for 2 Ancients and 2 Moderns per element so that everyone has an equal amount of breeds, but that's a long-term goal that may change over time.
Staff might have an update for us with the release of the Wind Ancient, which will be the last Ancient of this first wave unless they plan to release a neutral breed afterwards. I suspect the Wind Ancient might be an anniversary update seeing as how we got a new major feature (Effects) out of nowhere.

Ancients don't really have different rarities because they can only breed with their own kind. They work on a different breed setting than moderns because of that. But after all flights have gotten their ancient, staff should keep releasing them. They just want to get every flight an ancient before they start doubling up, just to be fair. Same reason wind and light were the last to get ancients, because they each already had two modern breeds while the rest of the flights only had one.
Staff did also say there's a possibility of a flight-neutral ancient once they're done doing the rounds. Kind like how bogsneaks are a flight-neutral modern.

Ooh I'd love to see what lore would come out of a neutral Ancient, don't think they'd do alchemy since that's how Bogs happened. Maybe something in relation to the Beastclans?

Staff have confirmed this in the past, and yeah, this is exactly it.
The Ancients were basically their way of getting more regular content out, because otherwise, we'd be several years between releases and it would only get worse over time as more clothing options get added.
The tradeoff for Ancients is that they get their linebreaking terts.
