I had them turned on but I couldn't see anything. All of the preview images are just static and so are all of the ones being posted by fellow players. My current theory is my browser is already set to reduce or disallow animations thanks to other things I need to moderate, meaning that this update is essentially useless for me bc I'm not turning those settings off just to see a sparkly sheen.
Update: Yes, it is the setting in my Windows OS. Turning this off to see the dragon animations means turning off the setting that prevents Windows from sucking up all my processing power to animate my browser windows minimizing and stuff. So. No. I will never be using this feature. Because in order to even see it in the first place, I have to actively make my entire computer run worse. Kind of a bad idea to make people make this choice, imo.
There was a work around to this already posted on Tumblr, if you use it. In a few hours, I can try to find it again and PM the link to you if you like. @McAlli

...signature loading....
I really like the concept of it, but the execution isn't really my cup of tea. Aside from the pitfall of different clients loading different things (if at all!), there's some oversight that gets me tilting my head a little. Special eyes were going to be visually off with Pastel Pulse and there wasn't a heads up on that? Oof. :( Arcane primal, you would have gone hard.

I think realistically, the only one I could see myself using is Glitz, especially as a decent "discount" holo skincent. But the really drastic ones feel like skins that managed to slip by the base shadow visbility rules, lol. I wish the opacity on the really dark ones could be lowered so I could see anything.

I want to be hopeful that it's just a first try and it'll be refined over time, a la fest effects as others have thought about, but in the meantime, my gemmie wallet is closed.

i'm in such a weird place with these.

1. the three most versatile ones (the holographic glitters, as all the others are VERY heavily skewed toward certain color palettes) are all gems. the one we got from galore irks me because it makes apparel shiny that shouldn't be shiny.

2. many of them are just really obtrusive. high opacity with saturated colors that mean they really look best on top of specific dragons. i am extra salty about this because i'm staring at the sunrise and spirit ones making half the dragon invisible/colored in meanwhile i've had a skin rejected multiple times now for lines that, if i make them PITCH BLACK, will be rendered into blank canvas by one of these effects. like not even hidden by apparel, but erased, rendering the whole 'style integrity' thing the rule is supposed to be preserving kind of muddy.

3. i don't like that this breaks saving dragon images. going to the dragon's page with an extra click, opening the widget, copying the image URL, pasting the image URL into the address bar, and saving from there is kind of wild to put forth as an alternate way to go about it. when i was doing adoptables i was saving sometimes 12 images at a time.

4. they don't work on my phone. my phone is not old. it is not from the last 2 years, but it is not old unless we are going to use the consumerist definition of the word, which honestly gives me the ick. i think it's kind of... perhaps a little out of touch to just be like "yeah some devices just can't use this feature at all" on a small site like this. AAA titles, MMOs with million-dollar budgets, people expect to get gated from some stuff by their ability to afford more recent hardware. a petsite from 2013? not so much. i am not buying a new phone to make sure i can see webGL effects. being unable to see webGL effects if i am on mobile means this feature is meaningless to me any time i am accessing the site on my phone. :/

5. they are very reminiscent of neopets, as someone else said.

idk... i usually don't post to threads like these. if people are excited, cool, power to them. but this one has rubbed me the wrong way in a couple of ways i guess.

Do y'all remember the what's your nightmare update thread? this is it for me.

I'd like them more if we got more treasure options and the overlay wasnt as opaque, right now they feel very out of place.

It's an interesting concept, but I feel that the time spent on this would have been better spent on a number of different updates.

I'm gonna say it: FR devs need to stop updating every 2 weeks if this is what comes out of it. I'm hesitantly optimistic these effects may lead to cool elemental themed effects. Like, the water one is cool! A bit too dark imo, but absolutely fitting for Water flight reps. But the others just seem...generic? Like, default Photoshop filters slapped onto a mask. Especially the void one. That one, to me, reads as some sort of tech demo you'd see on a product store page.

Update every month, or every other month (aside from festivals), and gives us some substantial updates. Not a cash grab.

I did see the post and gave it a like to find it later, but honestly I probably won't use this feature anyway. I just find it bizarre that Staff doesn't seem to have given this quite as much thought as they probably should have. Features released on site should not have to have "a work around" to function properly.

I think its cool but they just feel like moving skins to me and would be fine without them. I like two of the effects which I applied to my dragons but i don't think ill add them to many of my lair.
Yeah I appreciate the time the devs and artists spent on them, but I think I'm gonna totally ignore this customization aspect :') I really dislike the extra click that's required to go to the dragon's profile, and I don't love the effects themselves. I think I'll be disabling the animations for them. I find the update a little overwhelming as a whole haha, but I'm probably just being overdramatic.
Seconding this. Appreciate the effort put into em, but not for me
