TOPIC | dislike the update heavily
I can't tell if I like it or not because most dragon images are now breaking for me. :c. I am very excited for the butterfly one, and I bought the sun/moon one because I have a sun/moon themed dragon I was very excited to use it on, but it changed the colors too much. I really thought it would go from gold/orange "sunrise" to black/blue "moonrise," but sunrise looks like some kind of field or forest and doesn't fit my dragon's theme at all.

Strange update, honestly. I enjoy new content, but... yeesh. I don't know, I feel like this site needs to tie up loose ends, fix known errors, and add major QoL updates way more than this. This is neat as an idea but ultimately unnecessary, and as much as I appreciate the effort by the team, I am put off that most of the new content is gem MP content - as soon as I saw the update I was like, "Well, there's some gem items." And I was right.

I so would have appreciated a coli captcha fix or a QoL update for the dressing room and scrying workshop more. I'm sorry. I want to be much more appreciative than I am. I respect the work but this was not what I wanted (except for the butterflies, which I highly highly love.)

Also, effects used on dragons with silhouette scrolls are kinda seriously wonky if they look the same for everyone else as they do for me.

If I don't respond to your comment/post/ping/DM, don't take it personally.
I am awkward; sometimes I can't think of anything to say, or I may have forgotten. If important, poke me again.
I just think they are unbelievably ugly and obtrusive. They break the sites art style heavily. This is fine in user generated skins & accents because that is an inevitable element of player creativity. I want official stuff to keep its look that I've grown used to over a decade of play.
Yeah...bingo. This is exactly how I feel. I've been playing for so long and this is really the only update that I viscerally reacted negatively to. It just feels so wrong, it doesn't match with FR's art style or FR as a customization site IMO whatsoever, and it has basically no precedent. We've never gotten any effects besides skins (a playermade artstyle, which is important), and we've never gotten any moving features. To get them both in the same feature? It's too disconnected for me personally. Which just makes me feel not great- it's really worrying to me that the site might put more random, out-of-left-field things in that weren't tested well or don't fit the art style. And that makes me really sad because I LOVE this game. Part of the reasons why I love this game is because it is so consistent, and I...I don't know. There might've been a way to make these feel "Flight Rising." But right now, they don't. I've never really disliked an update, not this fundamentally. It saddens me [emoji=undertide sad size=1] I really wish I was one of the people that could find some good in it. So if you do, please don't take this as hating and keep enjoying it; knowing it's made for someone, even if it'll never be me, makes it slightly better.

I'm very neutral to meh about it. Definitely feels weird in a way, like... why? Did we need this? Why did the site feel we needed this? It gives me this gimmicky energy, and that gives me the ick.

But I also don't care? You can turn images static, it's not necessary for any breeding, and it just... is such a super-specific kind of vibe to give to a dragon that it definitely feels like it's best for those who love it and everyone else can just leave it alone.

I imagine I'll still be using some of the effects - I really like Flecks o' Foil, Glitz, Shimmerscale, and The Void Stares Back. Also, being a Water lair, I will absolutely be using Beryl Plunge. I could see Dearly Departed having some fun applications! But I don't feel any strong inclination to make any plans using them any time soon, other than maybe grabbing myself Glitz or Flecks o' Foil for Sausage

the more i sit on it the more i feel like this just kinda sucks. these things broke so much that they clearly were underbaked and not checked properly before being released (missing one or two colors on a gene is one thing, missing the mistakes on pose scrolls? not even trying to find a workaround for eyes getting overriden entirely again on top of it just breaking line breaking terts?), and the available options are kinda... meh. some feel very tacky and too much, and others have me squinting to find anything. that's not even really going into the strain its putting on the website loading anything, on top of the regular too many users strain.

good for anyone that likes these i guess, but man i kinda would rather this wasn't a thing for multiple reasons.

The idea behind this update feels rather half-baked, at best. Moving effects on a stationary object do not make the object appear more lifelike. If anything, it works in the opposite direction. Dragons wearing effects, to me, anyway, look less alive than they ever have. The site finally found a way to highlight the fact that the dragons are jpegs, and that, to me anyway, is a strange choice for an update. Making animated scenes could have been an excellent update, because that gives the impression that a character has simply paused for a moment in an otherwise active/real place. I'm just not sure what the goal was, here, but it feels like we missed. They also don't feel done to me. The coverage is so high on most of these that it takes away from the uniqueness of dragons. And the one we got from Galore is ... interesting. Also, on another (more important) note, this:
It reminds me of sites that are more focused on visual flair than being fundamentally interesting, if that makes any sense?
This extends beyond this update, but I actually think this is my main problem with this update and others like it. This update doesn't add anything to the game play. It just makes the site flashier. And, thereby, it feels like a fluff/filler update. New genes make for new breeding projects. New apparel, admittedly, always feels like its walking the line of being a fluff update. This just ... doesn't fit or add in a useful way. Achievements added a motivator, which is great. Night of the Nocturne adds both items and the appeal of gatcha without the risk, which makes for a motivator, as well. Arlo's, admittedly, is a fluff/filler update that is made better only by the fact that you can acquire genes, breeds, and scenes from it. Otherwise, it stands out as another click-wait-click-wait function when we could have been actively involved in the excavation process and had an enjoyable feature. I've become a bit fonder of Arlo's simply because of the breed, genes, and free scenes (also Arlo is cute). But this update doesn't offer any of those things and, thus, will never be Arlo. Fairground games are exciting for those who enjoy games, though I do wish they felt a bit more integrated with the theme of the site. They are, at the very least, interactive. I know my initial hope that we would get a fishing game in place of the Fishing gathering feature was a stretch, but I had rather hoped to see at least something interactive. Basically, I am consistently hoping for updates that add to the QoL, game play, functions, and otherwise interactive features of the site. Fluff updates feel really rather pointless and out of touch with games these days. Just makes me kind of concerned for the longevity of sites like this, is all. Not the same level at all, but it reminds me a bit of the Neopets saga. XD [s] (Which, on an unrelated note, Neo's thing about letting all of their games die and then just consistently adding more and more NC stuff was a thing. That was super weird, funny, and frustrating. High-key haven't really engaged with Neo much since. Even with the plot they added, it just feels like they keep doing desperate cash grabs and neglecting adding things that would increase the quality and longevity of their site, you know? I see you other Neo players here and yeah, I just, ugh. Miss my cute pets a lot, but I'm not paying IRL currency for pet slots and my accounts are full and have permanent customs, so what's left to do?)[/s] * Ahem * Sorry for the unrelated Neopets tangent. I'm just missing it a lot today. But, yeah, I'm glad some people are happy with this update. I just immediately turned off the animations and am hoping for them to add a toggle so that we can turn off seeing these entirely.

hmm. i was excited at first but now that i know the covering of the eyes is intentional due to limitations i'm not so sure. i think where i'm at is i enjoy the apparel specific ones, there arent any variables involved and they seem pretty functional. i just dunno about the dragon ones being of any use to me if they cut off other important features like eyes and genes, y'know? i dunno. i want to like it but it keeps slipping for me

I'm honestly not sure how to feel about this update yet, it's too early to tell really... I'm also pretty baffled by the difference in prices between the treasure and gem market ones and that more of them are listed on the gem market. Maybe it's an attempt at a gem sink?

I'm not sure if I'll be using them much just yet. Maybe I'll try a couple of the treasure ones for a bit to see if I like it. It does feel really out of place on FR, but I'm not going to bash the idea and I think it's a bit extreme to say that it ruins the site for you. It's optional, you don't have to partake in it. Also, as some other people have said, I think it's just something fun the devs wanted to toss in while they are working on other updates. Not that it is taking away from them working on those. At least I hope that's the case.

Anyways, give it some time. There will be errors that need to be corrected so if something seems off (as some screenshots have shown) then it will be addressed eventually.

While I like/am neutral to this update, there have been some excellent points made in this thread! Much to chew on, indeed.

Idk if I like them or not, I'm leaning more towards like than dislike, but time will tell. As a techie/someone with knowledge of web dev, it's interesting from that perspective to me, at the very least.

Do wish more testing had been done before release though, that's left a bit of a stain for sure.

I immediately turned the effect off because I dislike looking at gifs. Whenever I'm looking at a page that has one, it's hard for me to focus on anything else onscreen.

And I can't call my phone "old", I bought it new last August and it has all the updates, and the browser is the same as on my PC, but the dragons with these effects in the announcement post just turn into a small cube with :( emoji and this is exactly how it makes me feel now-
oh noooo, i think that's gonna happen to me too then. most of the preview images ni the announcement don't show on my phone, and the ones that do don't work. perhaps that's a bug that they'll resolve, but if it's due to altered phone settings, well. rip to viewing any dragon with an effect on mobile. i'm looking forward to new effects but obvi if this is an image-breaking thing for folks with certain device settings tweaked, that'll be an issue. overall, i'm VERY excited for future releases but meh on the current ones. the opacity on some is WILD, i would vastly prefer a more subtle version.
