What kind of jobs do your dragons have? I've been thinking about giving my dragons some jobs and I would love to read what kind of jobs do your dragons have or how your clan runs. The only thing I have an idea of is how my clan is controlled, the leaders being both my progens, a bunch of high ranked dragons (mostly the first dragons I got, breed or bought that I still keep) and a wildclaw council... You can give a short or long explanation if you want [emoji=guardian tongue size=1]

My progens are the headmasters of an academy.

Many of my permas are professors that specialize in different subjects: Science, economics, combat, history, etc.

The others are maintenance specialists, such as a groundskeeper, gardener, engineer, and other such jobs to keep the school going!

The rest are students and have no jobs, the lazy bums. :D

It's funny to be discussing this today, because today was the day I just happened to be working on a BUNCH of my dragons' profiles to actually establish the lore and their jobs. nn Got a handful done, and still a lot to go, but it's exciting making some progress! If you happen to chance upon them, hope it can help to inspire your own!

Boop!
what helps me is reviewing the purpose of the clan, or the reason why dragons have come together.

What I see most often are “Found Family” clans where the clan is just a myriad of different dragons from all walks of life and call the clan their new home.
For these clans I’d go about it by making it a small town/family structure.

Folks to manage the structure and order of the clan like masons, architect, engineers, electricians, plummers, gardeners, guards are some that quickly come to mind. So anything that a city or your clan needs to keep alive are jobs in this category.

Then there’s artisans, who either make art for fun or to attract customers. Painters, singers, sculptures, etc.

And social roles, like diplomats, hatchling-keepers, mentors, event organizers, leadership positions. You can have several dragons doing a part of the same job (multiple farmhands to run a farm) and one dragon that overseers the whole group.

some dragons can have multiple jobs, and what types of jobs that are applicable to your clan will 100% depend on individual lore. I’m not planning to have a hatchling-caretaker in my lore rn, as I don’t find them relevant as my clan isn’t really a “found family.”

Other clan types I’ve seen are

Kingdoms (a group of rulers overseeing a massive clan)
Rogues (a group of more dangerous individuals, with roles that lean into more mischief and occasionally murder…
Spirits (a lore clan majorly composed of spirits, so they will often have a completely different set of jobs than what I’ve listed above)
Worker bee clans (a clan that has a distinct purpose, either to mine for resources, fight for glory, investigate strange happenings, track down and control something dangerous, grow crops, be a hub for travelling dragons etc etc etc. These clans are less about “found family” and are more utility based. Dragons usually reflect or are inspired by the reason the clan was made.
Marketplace clans (most dragons are artisans and they’re all gathered to sell their wares, with a few dragons on infrastructure and protection)
Monster clans (not really a clan with monsters, but a clan of dragons that may not be normal mortal dragons but gods, dieties, immortals, and personifications of different powers such as the elements or a value.

Lore on FR is so varied that my list isn’t comprehensive at all, just patterns of what I’ve seen browsing the site. Lots of folks are fusions or have multiple mini clans from these archetypes.

You can get really creative with lore, and not all dragons have to have true “jobs!” Maybe they’re just apart of a whole, with personality of that makes sense.

——-
My clan is extremely underdeveloped, but we have a mini-clan that runs a train station, so they will have a conductor, enginemaster, a broker, several attendants, passengers, chefs etc

My two other main tabs are the sides of the same coin… a group of earthy colored dragons try to survive in a desert of shifting illusions, and the spirits that are responsible for the illusions. I need a purpose for the earthy clan still, it used to be that they inherited an abandoned mineshaft and are trying to recover the last of its resources…

The earthy clan will have treasure hunters, spirit mediums, exorcists, researchers, mercanaries, and spellcasters.

The clan of spirits will have roles that reflect who they were in the past life, a priest, a criminal, a king, a child etc

  • I fell in love and I can't get back up
i have a google doc full of jobs organised into categories lol

my lair is less of a clan and more of an…entire country. each lair is a village/city, so i’ll go by tab. but everything should still apply to a traditional lair setup!

xesao: a bunch of merchants and traders. and librarian and a trade company owner
seb tekeph: mainly crop/animal farmers, fishermen, and hunters. some outliers are a winemaker and a medicine maker
neb kept: architects, construction workers, armourers, and potters/cermanists

as i mentioned, my lair is more of a country. each tab/community has its own “leader”, but they’re all pretty equal in status.

i hope you can find some inspo for your own lair :D

I've got a High Council and a bunch of secondary "official" positions (treasurer, secretary, guard captain, archmage, Flight liaison, broker). Beyond that I've got a bunch of artisan dragons-- a scrimshaw carver, glassworker, seamstress, that sort of thing. For the sake of not having half my clan be dedicated gatherers I imagine most dragons hunt/forage their own food to some extent, but I've got a couple dedicated gatherers too. A minority after that are guards/warriors and cultural jobs like authors and philosophers. I'm still getting around to actually writing my lore, but I've at least given some thought to my dragon's jobs so I can give them all nice custom subheaders [emoji=gaoler laughing size=1]

My clan is a small coastal town. It's all very shady *laugh* Main motto is "any coin is good coin".

The unofficial mayor is the inn keeper, because if she kicks you out.. well.. you don't wanna anger the lady with the food, beds and entertainment. There's a guy who repairs ships. Traveling merchants. A guy who literally just fanboys over the warriors so he is now a sort of "expert" dragons go to when they want to hire a mercenary (my way of keeping track which dragon does well in what coli venue) There's a herbalist/healer. Anyone just kinda doing whatever it is they do.

My clan is a nomadic clan, following the ancient ancestral path of a snapper dragon. Not every dragon has a job yet, but here is a quick list of those that do.

Silicon – Guide, leads the clan on the long nomadic path
Mercy – Leader of the clan, as in sets the rules and such
Banner – Helps run the clan by taking care of the finances and other odds and ends
Fraction – Clan historian, writes down the events that happen to the clan
Reflection – Essential HR (or dragon-recourse in this case) she makes sure the dragons find a job that they like doing and that they are good at.
Little – Protector of the clan, warrior/fighter
Indestructible – Trains the warriors/fighters
Fort – Cultural guardian, he works to preserve what makes the clan who they are; as the clan changes and grows he works to ensure the these changes and such are not going to be harmful or dangerous to the clan
Eri and Clove – Data and fact collectors
Measure – Hairdresser
Ortol – Graphic designer
Veil – Linguist
Fold – Handles interactions between clan members and the familiars
Lore – Preserves clan’s history and keeps their secrets
BlackWidow – Nanny

Well you have the two tired dergs who run the place,
their daughter who's currently helping them,
their son who bakes,
the son's friend who's the local blacksmith,
that one mage and his wife,
the mage's kid who's also the one kid that idolizes Baldwin,
the only one good with kids,
the fashionista,
the medic prince man and his golem girlfriend,
the one who's personality is reading and books (although it is kinda lore relevant), a cartographer,
and the engineer and their lighting spirit friend.

Aka my clan is a hodge-podge of roles that basically addes up to 'found family but make it a whole town in a spooky forest'

I don't have a formalized economy, so maybe "job" isn't quite the right word. But in no particular order:

My clan founder Hadean is a loose figurehead and primary exaltee trainer. Several other dragons are coliseum fighters for general resource collection or for special missions.

Compline and Vesper are musicians. Compline is also my coliseum mage when one is required.

Brothers Jacob and Wilhelm are historians. Jacob is interested in cultures, folklore, and subjective perceptions and beliefs, while Wilhelm is quite hard-nosed about determining what actually happened.

Fluffy Kael is a babysitter.

Mesa, Butte, and their child Caprock are my gift basket delivery team.

Various dragons are responsible for food collection, water management, and geothermal heating. Nightfall is a Ridgeback and doesn't fish, but she spends a lot of time watching the sea, and you can pay her to consult on where you should fish.

Being located in Dragonhome as we are, a LOT of dragons dig - lairs, vault storage, underground roadways, etc. The most enthusiastic is Eventide - TOO ethusiastic. His mate Nalfen is a diplomat primarily concerned with managing him and mitigating the PR problems he causes.

Among the subspecies, Statues are lookouts. Sunrunners find and aid travelers lost in the desert. Jetstones are messengers between clan dragons and exalted dragons. Runecarvers are magic specialists.

Python is a seer. Delphi claims to be able to channel the Tidelord.

Dragonhome has undead skeletons, so my clan has tomb guardians, funerary priests, and others who deal with them (or who are them.) Other members are mediums who handle spiritual entities in various ways, including research, containment, enabling communication or vengeance, or helping them find rest.

Covenant is basically a contract lawyer.

I am not a dragon, and the clan arcane researchers very much want to understand how I got here. I am the archivist, chronicler, bookkeeper, and basically anything to do with records and organization. (It's how I explain me playing the game - I'm basically a very harried all-purpose secretary.)
