I always assumed their pose was their 'alert/hold up' pose? But I like the idea they're always ready to throw hands lol
Honestly, the amount of sheer attitude in this pose. I can't unsee it. (Edited to add -- there've been a couple tangents speculating on the pose in general and what they are doing, wings aside if you mentally line up the placement of their heads and bodies to that of hunting hounds it's pretty clear they are both in the middle of scent-tracking Shade Female has whipped her head around because she just caught a trace. Male has lined up to the wind & is lifting his head into it to fully taste it.)
This has been kind of my own take on it - my first two Gaolers, Malama and Maemd, became a Water Coli battler for Kelp beds (imagine a sense of smell akin to a shark's), and a leveled-for-Lair-Lore-Reasons Shadow sorceress whose 'scenting' is less literal - for certain types of magic and the like, in particular. In Maemd's case (per The Lore In My Head) this sensing, maybe out of habit or instinct, involves some of the same body language as does literally scenting something pursued, unless she makes a conscious effort to suppress it. Which she often does around other dragons, as she maintains a fearsome and unnerving air of mystery very much on purpose. So, that Gaoler poses show an 'alert' (as well as being so to show off the art) makes a lot of sense to me, especially for the more intense sorts like Maemd, or my Gaoler pirate Mearaigh here whose headcanon defines 'intense'. (I still think Gnarlers badly need a claw-trim; those things look absurdly useless and kind of painful, too. I do my best to ignore them.) So it suits him, too. (Useless Internet Points for anyone who saw the BilliSpeaks YouTube video where she spots a lizard near the end. 'No lizards were harmed'. [emoji=nocturne winking size=1]) TL;DR, I appreciate this take on their poses! (PS to add, @Youpiee makes a valid point as well, and the two are not contradictory, so.... hmm. [emoji=nocturne confused size=1])
