WINGS.
I don't mean "why do they have wings", I mean, that pose.
I can completely rationalize that for the other dragon breeds-- y'know, the airbourne breeds-- their wings are very lightweight, and casually stretching a bit whenever they move isn't a that big a deal effortwise, shake out the sails, readjust the drapes, no biggie.
BUT GAOLERS.

That's straight-up an extra pair of body-builder arms with a lil' fancy webbing at the ends. There is major effort going into holding that hunk of meat up high!
This is the derg version of Hulk Hogan walking around doing the bicep display thing all. the. time.

"There is always somebody who needs a slap. It may be you. I am prepared."
The body language here is pure "I walk through life with my weapon fully loaded and held ready at all times."

I have this image of somebody throwing a Sornieth-sized Pokeball at a Gaoler and the Gaoler smacking it right back without even bothering to look.
Honestly, the amount of sheer attitude in this pose. I can't unsee it.
-------------
(Edited to add -- there've been a couple tangents speculating on the pose in general and what they are doing, wings aside
if you mentally line up the placement of their heads and bodies to that of hunting hounds it's pretty clear they are both in the middle of scent-tracking Shade
Female has whipped her head around because she just caught a trace.
Male has lined up to the wind & is lifting his head into it to fully taste it.)

Double the beans for double the boops!

It's just a display thing so we can see their secondaries, I think.
However, I do like the idea of the males being like HURH! BIG WING! COMING THROUGH! sometimes just for funnies.

The fact that Gaolers feel like they just walk around to post up and vibe is exactly why they're my second favorite
They really feel like an ancient breed
"back in my day, extra appendages were for HUNTING… not FLAPPING…. weaklings…….."

It's both to display the genes and to fill up the blank space. Not only that but they use their secondary pair of arms for digging. Birds tend to have their arms folded but many choose to move them around and spread them due to whichever reason they rationalise with. There are many reasons.
Non-avian dinosaurs also sometimes had absolutely massive, hulking arms which they could keep in an outward position if needed. Those are very powerful shoulders Gaoler have, I'm sure it's not that big of a deal for them

he who lives without fear of lactic acid
I've always thought of it like, they're waving at us. since gao wings are used for digging and they have defined digits I always thought that gaogaos used them as proto arms while theyre walking on all fours so both gaos look so friendly and have their lil arms up because theyre waving at us!! theyre saying hello

I'm just picturing a Gaoler going "DON'T QUESTION MY LIFTING, BRO. GOTTA PUMP THE FLAPPY LIMBS TO DIG FOR TUNNEL BEAMS. NEVER SKIP TAIL DAY." in the most macho voice possible.

Reminds me of my birds stretching their wings, maybe they’re just having a good stretch.

I drew this long ago, but I don't remember under what context. Basically, Gaolers pose like that because they're ready for a catch...
now it's giving me the image of red pandas or raccoons standing up with their arms up to look threatening
