Feels like the thread is a bit misleading calling it tropes when the post covers...well, literally everything people have done in lore even if it's not a trope but a logical addition, but since it's all in good spirit this has always been one of my favorite threads to read. Can't think of anything myself that hasn't been added.

Sounds like literally anything you do with a name is a trope.

yes that's what a trope is, if you've ever gone for a nice wiki walk on tvtropes they list everything too. it's kinda the idea, to list all the stuff you can do.

I actually think this thread is amazing!! I love it so much, super wonderful! I love seeing these tropes and thinking "wow, I have some exactly like that" and then also thinking "hey, that is a great trope and now I kinda wanna use it!"
I also think this can be a great inspiration for anyone's lore! Fitting a trope isn't a bad thing it all! A few actually got me thinking, like "everyone has and is good at their dream job" which made me consider.. what if a dragon didn't have that? They worked so hard for their passions, but at the time they are unable to qualify for their dream job! Super cool, I love this so very much!!

okay, after seeing this thread pop up several times in the past few months, I just feel obliged to check how many of these I actually have.
- dragons are gods (...) - yes but it's more of an existential science twist rather than just "ooo i want a god" (1)
- everyone knows everyone else - uhm.....well, we are literally a village, that's completely normal? not everyone is friends or acquaintances but we're all residents of the same village, and as someone who has family in Suhopolje, a small town in Slavonija, I can tell you that my grandparents know the majority of the town so this is not weird, therefore I will not consider this a trope for myself (0)
- canon species sizes are ignored - sort of but not really, I just want to keep everything in the ranges of plausible (1)
- Egyptian character themed names - HELL YEAH, and it's for a good reason! As someone who has an Egyptian lair with a lot of research done on Ancient Egypt and Greek immigrants in Egypt, geography, climatology, biota, fashion, architecture, culture, etc, I think I have the right to do this. No one else has done this to this extent here therefore I will not consider this a trope either (0)
- heterochromia - yes but I don't do element lore anyway, I do genetics and evolution, so it's genetics that determine the eye colour. But yes, I am guilty (1)
- fandragon with adapted lore - okay I am super guilty. However, as I am fully convinced that we are all in fact fictional and fictional is real (to an extent), and that there is a way to access different realities, I am legally allowed to do this. No one can stop me. (1)
- self insert - YES but again, as someone whose persona is a riftwalking monstrosity, I am actually AGAIN allowed to do this. This isn't just a nonsensical self-insert, this makes sense lore-wise. I refuse to take responsibility for this (0)
- there is a clan library - yes but it's a reference to the Library of Alexandria so it's justified. (0)
- tavern keeper - of course but is that weird in a clan with 290 different occupations? Tavernkeeping was a thing in Ptolemaic Egypt. NEXT. (0)
- flightstalling - HAHAHA I AM THE MEME DEITY. okay you know what, fine, I admit it. BUT, my lore is not a meme, I take lore seriously and I want it as realistic as possible, which is probably the reason why I have like 10,000 hours spent on studying. (1)
- grandmotherly Snapper - only because she's my literal Grandma in dragon form and the outfit fit her that way the best (0)
- Dominance is not a thing - yes, it's not a thing. It's a game element, I want nothing to do with it, I want historical lore to make more sense than just that, so I want Sornieth history to be R I C H and coherent. (0)
- species/gene scrolls are not a thing - yes because that makes no scientific sense so I don't use it, if you want to though, feel free to do it but I don't want to associate with it, just like with the majority of game elements. (0)
So I have
5 things that could be considered tropey. Nice.

this got way longer than i meant for it to be
i think you might have misinterpreted the intention of tropes. they're not a
bad thing to have, they're just a thing that exists. it's impossible to write much without them. they're not something you're "guilty" of unless it's like, a racist one or something, which none of these are (the only one on this list i can really think of that would be an undeniably badthing to have is "everyone is optimistic and positive all the time except the evil ones" and "bad powers bad people", even imperial sue and the book of plot coupons isn't inherently a bad thing, i think there was someone i saw awhile ago who was doing like a shade-themed lore heavy nuzlocke or something and one of their characters was a creepy highly powerful kinda eldritch imperial cult leader wizard sort of guy who was named something like dagon or dagoth but the point is he fit the trope and still worked as a character). tropes also have nothing to do with the quality of execution-it applies to poorly written and well written versions of the same idea equally, because it's about the idea itself, not the quality of the execution (though there are some tropes that are specifically about failed execution but i tried to avoid adding those ones unless they had something unique and noteworthy about them). so yes, you are still "guilty" of egyptian themed names and ect, you just did a good job implementing it. :P
they're like archetypes, or categories. for example, one of the many tropes that exists out there is "furry platformer game". spyro is a furry platformer. crash is a furry platformer. sonic is a furry platformer. you'll find very few people who will honestly argue this is a bad thing. you're not going to find too many people who seriously think that spyro would be improved by not being a furry platformed game, or that falling under that trope is a negative thing for it. imagine spyro if it WASN'T a furry platformer. that'd be boring as hell.
or another example, a messy green splotch representing a stick figure outline of a hill with a cartoon flower on it that somebody scribbled in mspaint last week, and a stunning hyperrealistic landscape portrait on tumblr, are both still fundamentally digital paintings of landscapes.
or a rage face comic and a lovingly detailed drawing of lucky luciano riding the stickbug into battle are still fundamentally memes.
it's about fitting the category, not whether there's a good justification for it (unless the trope in question is SPECIFICALLY about how well executed the story element is). if anything a well-justified trope is the most quintessential form of it. so yes you have tropes, and that's nothing to be ashamed of. as tvtropes itself says, tropes are tools. how you use them is up to you, but a chisel is still a chisel no matter what you build with it or how skilled you are at using it. it's not wrong to have a level 1 that can beat up anything, it's not wrong to have a master of poisons, it's not wrong to have a crazy edgelord, they're just categories of common patterns of ideas, to be used or discarded as you see fit.
i think most people on here are kind of misinterpreting having a high "score" in number of tropes they fit as being a negative or shameful/embarrassing thing or tropes as being like a bad writing thing tbh. like some kind of mary sue test or something. it's not negative or positive it's just a Thing. you objectively do have a tavern keeper. it doesn't matter why he's there. you have one. that's the point. the only point to any of this is just that it's there, not WHY it's there or whether it being there makes sense in context. i have a case of fan breed, it's one of autopilot's whipscales. it doesn't matter why it's there or how i write it being there into my lore. the only thing that matters for the trope is just simply that i have one. and said fan breed existing is all there is to that trope. there's no hidden meaning, it is literally just a statement that this thing fitting this category Exists, for better or worse.

I don't think anyone on this thread thinks they're ACTUAL tropes in the
negative sense. Maybe some are, but only a few. As someone said it's more like TV Tropes where basically any concept is called a trope. It's bad wording/naming but it's more a collection of the different concepts people use

Quote:
-silks and flowerfalls everywhere, even on dragons with physically demanding jobs. like the apparel version of level 1 who can beat up anything.
Can I just say that I restructured my clan lore and made my third clan's lore specifically to justify this? We have a royal court now and political intrigue. Most dragons are made with Court appearances in mind, and I have dressing room scries of them on their off days.
Edit for spelling those words.
