At the edge of the Tangled Wood there rests the hollowed stump of a once colossal pine. Known to modern Dragons only as Murkbarrow Close, it was known in an age past as the Colossus, Sister of the Behemoth. Much like the Behemoth, this great pine had its own choir of Auraboas. Tenders that lived in its branches and saw to its every need. Now though, the pine is nothing more than the dead stump it is today. It is unknown what lead to its demise. It could have been a disease, or maybe the Foxfire Brambles choked it out, or it could have even been a conflict between the Gladekeeper and the Plaugebringer that brought about its end. The only ones who would be able to know would be the Auraboas that lived alongside it.
Regardless, with their home dead, the Auraboas left. Some are said to have migrated to the Behemoth, joining their brethren. Others, however took to the Foxfire Brambles. The swath of ever expanding vines and thorns that had reached an age no other plant life save for the two Sisters had achieved. And with its age, some of the Auraboas had started to hear whispers. The Brambles were forming a Voice.
The Brambles spoke to them in barely there whispers. And the Auraboas, their purpose gone with the death of the Colossus, whispered back. Voices mingled, a new Loop anchored, and a covenant created.
In time, the Auraboas began to resemble the Brambles more and more. Their scales darkened, and their bodies looked more like the tough woody vines around them. The most notable change though, was the thorns. What started out as a row of small spines along their backs, gradually became larger and covered more of their bodies. Soon, they no longer saw themselves as the same as the Auraboas of their shared memories. And so, now seen as a new subspecies, they christened themselves as the Whispering Brambles. An ode to the beging of their new covenant.
For centuries, the growing subspecies remained amongst the Brambles, never venturing out of their dense overgrowth. Until one day the Foxfire Brambles bade them to. You see, it is the very nature of vines to spread and grow. The Brambles were no different. With the population of its Tenders stabalized, it was ready fulfill its nature in totality. The Brambles whispered to them, bade them to take cuttings and seedlings, to propagate itself throughout the lands. And they did so.

Whispering Brambles, or simply just Whispers, are the first and most well documented of the variants. The existence of the other two variants is only know from what the Whispers themselves tell.

Dark Taps

[columns][morphology=4415306][nextcol]According to the Whispers, deep bellow the earth in vast networks of water filled caves, there exists the Dark Taps. The Dark Taps are a clan of Undertides that, after the abandonment of the Tidelord, made the water filled caves beneath the Tangled Wood their home. These cave systems had long been the main water source of the Foxfire Brambles, their roots had pierced deep into the earth and now occupied much of the tunnels. Coincidently, the roots made perfect cradles for the eggs of the Undertides. It was unknown, however, that the roots of the Brambles slowly altered the developing young. It was a gradual change that took dozens of generations, but eventually the Undertides were able to Hear the Brambles. And in deep sleep, are able to skim the Loop of the Whispers above. Now, much like the Whispers tending to the vines on the surface, the Dark Taps tend to the roots of the Foxfire Brambles.[/columns]
Physical Attributes:
Dark Taps are nearly identical to the surface dwelling Whispers. But while all Whispers are covered in thorns, those same thorns are actually quite rare among the Dark Taps. In the subterranean tunnels filled with roots and water, thorns can make navigation somewhat difficult. That said, Dark Taps that do have thorns are highly revered. These individuals are referred to as Thorn Bearers, and are said to be the most connected to the Brambles
For most Dark Taps however, it is more common to have a form of bioluminescence, this takes the form of chemical filled growths akin to those of Angler fish. The eyes of the Dark Taps, again much like the Whispers, are typically purple, red, or brown.
Social:
Dark Taps, like all Undertides, are highly social dragons, often indulging in physical touch with others close to them. This contact can range from lightly brushing fins across anothers, to a full body wrap, though the latter seems reserved for mates and offspring. Another way they assure themselves of each others presence is by observing the dull blue glow their bioluminescence gives off. While the brightness and intensity of the luminescence can be changed to communicate with one another, all Dark Taps that have bioluminescence always exude a faint light, even when asleep. Lairs with large families of Dark Taps can illuminate long stretches of tunnels.
Though social creatures, they are very quite, this is due to the cave systems they live in. Though the roots of the Brambles do reinforce the tunnels, excessively loud sounds could still potentially cause caves-ins. Due to this, Dark Taps often hold their faces very close to one another when they need to verbally communicate, barely talking above a hushed whisper. Mated pairs will even press their faces together to converse.
While most have bioluminescence, not all do, or sometimes silt on the cave floors can get stirred up, rendering light useless. To deal with this, Dark Taps have developed a 'short-sight echolocation'. Simply, a very quite click that allows them to navigate with ease. The ones that use this the most are the Thorn Bearers.
In recent years, the Dark Taps have been called to serve alongside their Auraboa siblings. More Runners are needed but only the young, unmated Dark Taps have been brave enough to heed the call. And of those, it is most frequently Thorn Bearers that venture forth. This is largely impart due to the need to be close to others, especially family. Occasionally, a mated pair will make the journey together.
Dark Taps that become Runners will often seek dark, damp caves or areas that are heavily shaded to plant their nodes. After years where the only light was that of bioluminescence, they find sunlight quite hard to bear. Thankfully, the Foxfire Brambles thrive just as well without light as they do with.
Thorn Bearers:
It would be understandable for one to assume that Thorn Bearers are the most common subvarient of the Dark Taps. However this is not the case. The reason for this misconception is the fact that Thorn Bearers are more willing to take up the mantle of Runner, leaving the dark subterranean tunnels to aid the spread of the Foxfire Brambles. In truth there are only a handful of Dark Tap lineages that bear the revered Thorns.
The reason for their predisposition to become Runners is not known for certain, but the assumed reason is their Thorns. Like all Undertides, the frills of Dark Taps hold venom. This same venom is also secreted from the Thorns of the Bearers. This naturally grants the excellent defense, and even a deadly attack.
The Sightless:
The most rarely seen subvarient of Dark Taps would be the Sightless. As their title suggests, these individuals are completely blind, though not by birth. Through rite or ritual known only to the Dark Taps, and presumably the Whispers via the Loop, Dark Taps willingly sacrifice their sight to gain heightened attunement to the Foxfire Brambles.
With the sacrifice of their sight, the Sightless gain the ability to hear the Voice of the Brambles better than any other member of the colony. This often results in them becoming leaders of the colony.
While the heightened connection to the Brambles is the most notable effect, it is not the only one. Now lacking sight, the Sightless gain an unmatched sense of hearing. Their improved hearing allows them to listen to the exchanges of water and gases within the roots of the Brambles. Allowing them to detect any issues or ailments as soon as they manifest.
The Sightless can be identified by their eyes, lacking vibrancy. While their eyes do not all take on the same dullness, they are most frequently Dark, Faded, or sometimes exhibiting a spiral like Swirl or Faceted appearance. Very rarely, Sightless with the purple eyes will exhibit a darkened color with a thick Primal ooze dripping from their tear ducts.
Lair:
Dark Taps create Familia dens. A bonded pair will seek out a room or chamber in the caves to call their own. Ideally, this room will have roots growing through the walls or ceiling that they can use as anchor points. Or at the very least the room should have rock formations large enough to fulfil that purpose. Regardless of the rooms natural features, it must be spacious. While Dark Taps do not lay their eggs in their dens like their surface dwelling counter parts, they do share their dens with their offspring until they themselves find mates.
Quite frequently, the entire tunnel leading up to the original den, if the tunnel is wide enough, will be divided into sections of different chambers. Each successive chamber is made by either the next generation or younger siblings. Often times, if the pair that made the original den passes, their den will pass to their offspring. In this case, if the offspring have made successive chambers, each pair will move into the newly vacant chamber ahead of them.
As stated above, Dark Taps do not lay their eggs in their own dens like the Whispers. They instead have a nesting ground shared by the colony. This nesting ground is a large cathedral in the cave system that is utterly filled with the interwoven roots of the Foxfire Brambles. This maze like tangle of roots pre-dates the Dark Taps and their occupation of these caves. In fact, it is these very roots that slowly made the Dark Taps what they are now.
According to the Whispers, deep bellow the earth in vast networks of water filled caves, there exists the Dark Taps. Now, much like the Whispers tending to the vines on the surface, the Dark Taps tend to the roots of the Foxfire Brambles.
