Their excellent nocturnal vision has its drawbacks, though. If they were to ever leave the protection of the impenetrable mist of the Tangled Wood, these dragons would lose their sight completely as their extremely sensitive eyes would be claimed by the sun. Foxfire Bramble, as the darkest place in the realm, offers them much the perfect hideout for their complicated, magically-enhanced gardens. The Foxfire Gardens have been part of the mythology of the woods for a long time, but until recent years no one has ever found proof of their existence. It is said that rare, cursed plants are grown there, plants that are necessary for some rituals and spells, plants that certain dragons would pay a fortune to obtain. Bramblewoods hold the monopoly of these plants. Their traditions are intertwined with the care of these exotic materials and as such, they refuse to share any knowledge about their care. That doesn’t mean they’re not open to discussion. Trading with them is tricky though, as they don’t value money, but secrets. Secrets are used as part of the Bramblewoods’ magic, which specialises in curses and protection. In combination with their overpowering herbs from the gardens, these curses and protective charms are notoriously hard to get rid of. Inexperienced magicians might find the effects of the spell they’re trying to cleanse mirrored on themselves, thus spreading the curse. In the case of protective charms, they run the risk of turning them into prisons for both the victim and themselves, effectively corrupting them into a form of a curse. Although not hard to identify, only experienced witches should handle Bramblewood magic.

Bramblewoods, as they call themselves, are dragons who have adapted to the eternal darkness of the thorny knots by mimicking their shapes and developing a high sensitivity to sunlight, allowing them to perceive forms even in its almost complete absence. They don’t ask for compensation for offering their services to one another, the way they do with other dragons. Instead, kindness and compassion is expected. Being taken care of and giving in return is the core of Bramblewood society. Services and goods are exchanged freely, given with the understanding that the receiver will return the favour when the provider is in trouble. In the case of weaker members, such as hatchlings or the elderly, it is even more important to offer them as much help as they need. Compassion is viewed as both a basic characteristic of every Bramblewood and as a virtue. Although no one will admit it out loud, a Bramblewood who presents themselves as more kind and loving than their peers, will soon end up a higher social status based on their virtues alone. They’re expected to act based on those virtues, having the best interests for their community in mind. They’re all part of the vine, intertwined and tangled in a symbiotic dance of thorns. That’s why secrets are so important. Hostility within the society is hidden in fear of repercussions. Differences are settled with as little confrontation as possible, they don’t want to upset their peers. As one would expect though, this avoidance of discussion often leads to misunderstandings, false assumptions and rumors. It’s considered abnormal to harbor negative feelings for other members of the community, and if they’re unearthed, they usually lead to social exile and isolation. Arguments are rare. When they happen though, they end up in a bloodbath that affects the entire community as it often ends up having a domino effect on everyone else’s secrets. They’re all part of the twisted, knotted bramble and if a thorn catches on fire, it spreads fast. Some Bramblewoods have left their communities. Some by choice, others by force, they have ventured out into the bright, burning world outside the woods. Donning their own protective charms and carefully planning their routes during the night, they travel the world of Sorienth offering their expertise to anyone willing to pay the over bloated price. Outside Foxfire Bramble, they’re known as Hex Merchants and they’re as notoriously hard to find as their vine-dwelling peers. They often end up dyeing their hair and wings in colors that would have caused them trouble in the dark habitat they used to call home, but they seem to be blending in just fine in the blazing lava of Ashfall Waste. Even outside the woods, Hex Merchants maintain their social nature. They often seek out flocks of dragons to surround themselves with or a partner to start a family soon after they leave their old lives behind. Some of them don’t want to be bound to a single social group during their travels and will end up with a large network of contacts they can interact with at any time, although such relationships often lack depth due to the little care the Bramblewood puts into each individual. They’re branches spreading away from the twisted knot, green and willing to explore.

Some keep their colors as a reminder of their roots. Perhaps they plan to return one day. Perhaps not. Either way, all Hex Merchants have a more expanded repertoire of curses and spells. Forced to protect themselves from both larger predators and the burning, deadly sun they have developed their magic far beyond what their peers back home would need or care to.
