However, what many are not aware of, is what happens when The Shade within a Lich is removed. What happens then? They become Ghasts.[/i]

[indent]It is said that the lighter a Ghast the more pure they are, but that purity comes at a great cost. The Shade is the void of magic, it attacks, consumes, and feeds off of all magic it comes in contact with. Lichs only retain their magic by creating a kind of symbiotic relationship with The Shade that has infected their soul. As their body naturally produces magic, The Shade feeds off of the excess while giving the Lich more power in return. It’s a difficult balance, and eventually The Shade consumes more magic than the Lich can produce, fully consuming them.
Due to this, many ways to “Neutralize” a Lich (Much like Neutralizing a Ghoul), were attempted. Of course, most of these attempts were absolute failures. The main principle used at first, was if The Shade can fully consume a Lich by eating more magic than they can make, what if they can undo a Lich by feeding them more magic than The Shade can handle? The results were horrific, so it was back to the drawing board. Eventually it was discovered that the only way to get rid of the parasitic Shade was to remove all magic from a dragon, but this posed more problems than solutions. After all, magic was a dragon’s life force, right? Well, it is and it isn’t. A dragon’s soul is made of magic, it’s what gives them feelings, emotion, personality, and everything else that makes a dragon more than just a husk.[/indent]

The process goes like this, you start with two dragons, one Lich, and another dragon that has great control over their magic. It doesn’t have to be a Necromancer, but since they often have powerful magic and great control over it, they end up going through this process more than other dragons. The caster places their left hand over the Lich’s heart and sends a short wave of magic into the Lich’s body to locate their soul. This can be extremely painful for the Lich, especially if their elements conflict. Once the Lich’s soul is found, the caster grabs it with their magic and pulls, this is painful for both individuals. The caster experiences near crippling backlash, tearing at their mind and soul, while the Lich experiences a pain often compared to having an organ ripped out. Many Lichs and casters die in this process. Once the Lich’s soul is removed the caster has to quickly destroy it by overloading it with magic. This often leaves the caster even weaker, but they can’t stop yet. Before the Lich’s stripes and wings lighten fully, the caster has to reach into themselves and rip off a piece of their own soul, forcing it into the Lich, and completing the process of turning them into a Ghast.[/indent]

However, the strangest side effect of this process is called “The Soulmate Effect”; since these two dragons now hold parts of each other's soul, they gain many new traits. The most noticeable change is the sharing of pain and emotions, since the soul is where those things are felt the most, sharing a soul means sharing those feelings. The dragons are also often drawn to each other more and more, this is most often theorized to be the soul attempting to stitch itself back together. The Ghast however gains one of the worst ends of this deal, as without a full soul, they can hardly feel, but they can feel for the one who holds the rest of their shared soul. The Ghast often becomes dependent on their caster, staying at their side because they can’t stand to be away from them.
The ethics of turning a Lich into a Ghast are often debated, some argue that it’s cruel and unusual, others state that becoming a Lich is a fate worse than death, and any cure should be used. Ghasts are often treated similarly to a Servus, as most don’t understand the dependency on the one who turned them, and assume it to be the same as a Neutralized Ghoul and their Necromancer. Many often refer to Ghasts as Neutralized Lichs, despite the fact that they are incredibly different. Ghasts are seen as weak, powerless husks, far from the dragon that they used to be. Ghasts turned by non-Necromancers are often treated far worse, because many Necromancers think that only a weak Lich could’ve been turned by a regular dragon who wasn’t blessed by Mother.
