Dr. Jean Hanson was a biophysicist and zoologist whose research contributed to one of the most important concepts in anatomy and physiology. She helped discover the sliding filament theory and co-wrote a paper with Hugh Huxley, which was published in the May 1954 issue of Nature. The theory was not well-received by other scientists at the time, but after more research in the 1980s by other scientists, it is now the most widely accepted theory of muscle contraction.
