The Path to Clarity
Ancient stories tell of the path from Madness to Clarity. Though most modern Sages scoff at the idea of changing your fate these stories still seem to weave themselves into the fabric of Sage society.
Opal
Shattered
These Sage's powers can defy reality. From impossible movement to knowledge no one should possess. Unfortunately, it often costs the Sage their sanity as they can no longer understand the world around them through the added input from their sight.
Keel
Flecks of Brilliance
The line between madness and insanity is very fine. These Sages have stepped across it. While their bodies are bound to Sornieth their minds and powers are not. This can manifest in many ways. From a meditating Sage able to sense what is happening elsewhere, even other worlds, to seeing a clouded view of the hearts around them.
Crackle
Scars of Strength
These Sages nearly went mad from their powers but clawed their way back by force of will. As varied as the Shattered but grounded in the physical principles of Sornieth. Powers could range from unusual magical abilities to greater agility and reaction time.
Filigree
Purity of Vision
These Sages are dreamers and seekers of wisdom. They often wander seeking lost knowledge or aid others who have strong dreams. With their ability to see to the heart of problems, people, and other puzzles they are invaluable friends and dangerous adversaries.
Prodigy of Opposition
Warrior Sages with many paths and styles. Many reasons to clash in combat. From berserkers to swords masters to clear-minded aesthetics. These Sages share certain traits across species. All have strange jewel hard eyes, all have natural armor on their bodies that helps to protect them and all are preternaturally fast. All of those Sages are prodigies of their particular styles of combat, picking up new moves with ease.
Scales
Flexible armor. As in many things, modern breeds are more flexible. Their scales are tough and will flex before being pierced or broken. This only goes so far though. (Note: Abberations have adapted Scales to make them stronger, as is their way.)
Scorpion
Natural weapon. These Gaolers wield hidden blades at the end of their tail. It takes a great deal of training to become truly proficient in this natural weapon and some Gaolers have it removed rather than risk injuring themselves or others.
Skeletal
Heavy Armor. Banescales with Skeletal are sometimes likened to winged cannonballs. They can take impacts that would kill another dragon and shake them off easily. Their bone plating limits their mobility however making them clunkier.
Fangs
Sapping Bite. In keeping with their desire to become stronger, a Fangs Sage's best defense is a good offense. Besides protecting a vulnerable part of the dragon’s anatomy, these fangs are removable and can be used as weapons. Any fang stabbed into an opponent in sight of the Sage's eyes becomes an energy-draining conduit that allows the Sage to steal their opponent's life force.
Plating
Energized Armor. Any enemy strike against the armor of a Plated Sage will reveal a shocking twist in the form of a magical burst of electrifying energy that repulses opponents. Too many strikes can result in a cumulative stunt effect that allows the Plated Sage to handle their enemy at their leisure.

It is unknown if these Sages were created directly by the gods, born naturally or if they were somehow changed by dragonkind in the distant past. The end result is the same. The eldritch and unnerving Sages who fall into the Haloed type have eyes detached from their bodies. These eyes float alongside their bodies where a normal Sage would have eyes but can travel and move a short distance from the Sage’s body like orbiting moons. This allows the Haloed Sage unimpeded vision all around them.
As if that were not strange enough the Haloed can manifest additional eyes and limbs from their own elemental power, these eyes and limbs can be of any size or shape though anything larger than the mass of the dragon may cause a strain to the creator.
Flowering of the Future
An ability particular to Gaolers and Veilspun to be able to foresee how other living things will grow and change. From the tiny lives of microbes to the living breathing universe. This power is particularly dangerous as focusing too strongly on something too small or too large can leave a Sage absorbed for hours or years in the alien life they are observing.
Arrows of the Hunt
Spines or Thorns these Sages grow on their bodies serve as extrasensory organs once removed. Usually they allow the Sage to see the area around the spine or thorn they left behind though this can manifest as other senses or even a sense outside the usual. These can serve myriad uses from the utterly banal to the nefarious.
The Weft and The Warp
Gaolers were created as guardians of Sornieth against the Shade, an imperative that is built into their very essence. With their earnest desire to keep their world safe, some Gaoler Sages have developed a particularly entwined set of abilities known as The Weft and The Warp.
Together these Sages can repair damage to the magical fabric of Sornieth by weaving together the fibers of their fur. Traditionally both Braids and Wintercoat Sages train as weavers, though this is not the only life path they may pursue. As other breeds of dragons have begun to evidence growth of the needed fibers, a few daring weavers have begun to teach outsiders their weaving and patching techniques.
Wintercoat
The Weft
Wintercoat Sages' long and fluffy fur can be clipped and spun into fine and beautiful thread used in making fabrics of many types. It is coveted by harpies who claim it takes color best of all the fibers in Sorneith. However, when this thread is used to make cloth with warp threads from a Braids Sage the fabric can bolster the nature of reality around it and even be used to close holes between dimensions left by the Shade, damaging magics and other incidents.
Braids
The Warp
Braids Sages provide the strong warp threads needed to anchor weaving. Sages often braid these fibers in their manes to protect them from breakage and allow them to grow longer. These are the fibers that help anchor the fabric made from both Braids and Wintercoat Sages to rips and tears in reality caused by Shade excursions or other magical disasters.
Warped Warp
Aberration Braids
A surprise and not necessarily welcome one to Gaolers, fibers from a Braids Aberration Sage can be used to patch a hole in reality almost like normal. Except, sometimes there are unexpected results when next that Aberration returns to the Wyrmwound.
What is real? What is strong?
Experiments are ongoing.
Lucid Walkers
The dreams of Sages can be dangerous things, trapping themselves and others when their powers go wrong. The Lucid Walkers are the most dangerous of dreamers as they travel between the dreams of other beings, changing them and even moving dreamers between their own dreams and others. Controlling this power does not come easily but for many Sages putting in the work may mean the difference between wandering lost in slumber or living in the waking world.
Crown of Memories
These Sages carry the memories of generations stretching back to earliest days of the Fourth Age when they were created. Through specific rituals to their breed these Sages can access the wisdom of their ancestors.
Mandibles
Mandible Sages first appeared aboard the Astrolab and were considered very useful to have on your crew since no one can eat their memories - unlike manuals and memoirs. Since the Crash, Mandibles Sages are often found surrounded by a cloud of more bibliologically responsible dragons taking notes and organizing the data of these living archives. Verbal mnemonics passed down through generations help these Sages recall what they need to know.
Gnarlhorns
The Gnarlhorn Sages are considered a valuable resource indeed by the Orders for their deep tactical knowledge of Shade Beasts. They access the memories of their ancestors through meditative martial arts movements learned from their hatchling days. These Sages are not often seen outside the Fortress of Ends, Those that do join the Seeker Order and travel may sojourn to the sites of lost battles where the Shade taint has not yet been checked or hunt for ancient caches of lost knowledge to aid in their war.
Eldritch Elementals
Sometimes Divine blessings come from unexpected and even unwelcome places. Note: These are all a sub-class of Haloed Sage with eyes that are separated from their bodies and the ability to manifest eyes and limbs at will.
Brightshine
Swallowed Suns
Sages with Brightshine can swallow light, pulling it into themselves like a blackhole. Fires wink out, the day goes black for a few uncertain seconds, glowing items lose their luster when a Swallowed Sun steals their light. Like and unlike a black hole these Sages can at their own whim create miniature suns from their stolen light, illuminating even utter blackness like the brightest day.
Thundercrack
Catalytic Conduit
When a Thundercrack Sage deliberately touches two objects they can create a link between them, this link could be a transfer of energy, emotion, awareness, or any number of other things. The Sage is unaffected in any way by the link as long as they are touching both objects, the second object acting as a ground for the transfer. Should contact be broken whatever was being transferred will affect the Sage instead.
Flameforger
Baelfire Hearts
Driven by the emotions of the Sage, the fire of Flameforger Sage only burns what they want them to. These fires can be hot, cold or acidic. As they are controlled by the emotions of the Sage the flames can make those emotions painfully obvious with unexpected danger to those in the vicinity.
Starfall
Extrastellar Senses
A Starfall Sage not only has 360° vision but they can hone their other senses in the same way, smelling, hearing or even knowing the physical texture of something distant from them. The rings of power that encompass their bodies shift as they are used, arranging in a way that makes sense for the bearer. Some might form concentric rings as if they are magnifying the sense from a point; others rings might widen even out to the object being studied.
Riot
Eternal Sentinel
The decaying, yet still growing, remains of a parasitic twin. The limbs of a Riot Sage can morph and twist into different shapes. These Sages have some control over their twin, learning the physical and emotional triggers that cause a reaction early in life. However the twin can and will react to threats the Sage themself has not perceived, attacking or defending the Sage with their shifting limbs.
Rockbreaker
Shattered Witness
Rockbreaker's Sages are often among the most ancient of Sages with lifespans to rival those of even Ghost Sages. Other Sage powers may have faded or become strange but these Sages move in a solar system of broken crystalized eyes. They see all and their long long lives have given them the wisdom to understand much. There is speculation that slivers and chips of these ancient Sages eyes are the root cause of Proliferation of Eyes.
Crystalline
Galeborn
Crystalline Sages carry with them their own personal snow storms. This can be a cute little flurry or a raging tempest. Where they walk or fly, frost and ice form, water freezes and magma solidifies. Dedication and study can increase the magnitude of the storms and rumors say that in truly skilled Galeborn the elemental power of the dragon may even begin to show through creating events like thundersnow or a whirlwind of freezing sleet.
Gaolers are often Elite Seekers, sent to hunt Horrorbeasts (though not all follow this path).
Trickmurk
Encroaching Puppeteer
The eerie sight of a Trickmurk Sage can worry even the most stalwart heart. The dancing goop of their tertiary disguises the places where it melts into the shadows. Once an Encroaching Puppeteer takes hold of a shadow it can manipulate whatever that shadow is attached to at will. Breaking the line of shadow between the affected object or being and the Trickmurk Sage will break the control but that might be easier said than done.
Mistral
Bardic Zephyr
In concept a creative Wind dragon’s dream but in practice perhaps difficult. The wind speaks and sings to these dragons in the stories of the wider world. Perhaps of the doings of gods, or perhaps the cricket chirping on its blade of grass. All are stories, all weave the tapestry of the world together.
Wavecrest
Tidal Spindle
By twisting and spinning the waves of water produced by their bodies Tidal Spindles can create three-dimensional whirlpools that they can use to affect other dragon's dreams, and memories and even give them glimpses of their future.
Greenskeeper
Creeping Growth
Perhaps parasitic perhaps a divine blessing, this plant produces whatever blossom or fruit the dragon bearing it wishes in an accelerated time frame. Roses in minutes, tomatoes in less than half an hour and more. The dragons do not seem harmed by the plant, and yet its roots sink deep into their flesh and cannot be removed.
