Only Echo died, everyone else lived. And that's before safer heist kicked in. Fortunately, Safe Heist saved Echo, so everyone but her levels.

One moment, William was singing songs to Hypnos, and then the next moment, he was gone, never to be seen again. The roses that bloomed the following day confirmed the worst; William was dead. Hypnos was concerned for his friend, and concerned for the colony at large; no one was being attacked by vines, so certainly it had to have been done by something else. But what?

This question burned in his mind, and he brought up his concerns to Queen Sophie. Unfortunately, she wasn't keen on listening to what he had to say. Cats die all the time, and she wasn't going to get herself too worried about it.

This doesn't bode well for him at all.

It wasn't so much a backstabbing as it was an unfortunate circumstance.

On principle, Princess Wisp didn't want to hurt anyone. Unfortunately, when idiot bards get in the way, and you have the option of saving them or saving yourself, and you choose save them but they fight you... you have no choice. They die and get thrown to the wolves. Or vines, in this case.

She felt awful about this, and that guilt felt worse when Echo got injured in the attack too. Wisp wanted to do good - she wanted to be a good leader. And yet, the cards just seemed stacked to her.

Guilt continued to gnaw at her stomach like a hungry rat.

Hypnos watches with concern as, from her gilded tower, Sophie points claws at Carrie and Candice. Apparently, things went missing - but what? That remains to be seen, but Hypnos can't help but shake his head. He's tired - so tired - all of the time, but something should be done about this abuse of power, right?

He came here with promises of working for a glorious crown, and for that, he was excited. He wants to serve a ruler who rules by the law, not by their own whims. Bluh.

He tugs Aspen closer to him, trying to shelter him from the piercing gaze of Queen Sophie. Also, since when was there a tower?

Lore - Rebellion

Just like that, another leader lost.

They all felt the pain of this, and they all considered just turning tail and running to Sophie's side.

Or maybe that was just Blade. He didn't want this fighting - he didn't want this chaos, and he certainly didn't want this death. But no one else stood up to take Wisp's place, and someone had to.

For now, he was going to work hard on making this place peaceful, and a place that he could be proud of leading. He wanted to be a leader that would make anyone proud, but especially his own.

He just hopes he can do a good job.

Moon 8
Echo and Aspen have been leveled and are now considered adults.

1. Big mistake. Somebody misread the directions. Three random cats attempt to break into the lair of the Death Paragon instead of some other random chump's colony. They're lost to the tar pits, never to be seen again. Exalt!

The Queen quite liked the look of one of the two brothers that joined the Kingdom today. She took such a shining to Slate, in fact, that she invited him with her on a personal mission. The two cats worked well together, and they returned with the spoils of a hunt well-received. A rabbit for each meant most of the other cats would be eating well tonight.

The two shared a rabbit together for themselves.

Hypnos yawns and stretches, grateful for the meal. What does he care if the Queen gets a new mate? His belly is full and things are calm for once.

Things were only calm for the Briarthorn Kingdom. Here in Poisonheart's kingdom, things continued to be rough and rocky. Three cats get yanked in the middle of the night, it's like the territory itself wants to completely erase the kingdom. What are cats to do?

Blade is nervous, scared even. Still, he soldiers on. He doesn't want to let the late princess Whisper down. May her soul rest in peace. He pays respect at her flower, shared with Echo's.

13. A coup! Exalt your leader. They have been dramatically betrayed by the others a la the ides of march. Determine a new leader from the remaining cats. The highest level cat will be it. If there is a tie, the oldest tied cat shall be the leader. Level the tied cat one level to make it better than its peers.
Special Clause: The number of cats that coup the leader must equal or be higher than that of the leader's level. Otherwise it fails, and half the attempted coup members are exalted.

I'm actually screaming. LOL.

Lore Phase

Hypnos watched, unconcerned, from the shadows, as Slate plots against his own mate. Apparently, he wasn't as loyal as Hypnos thought. No matter. Sophie wasn't exactly the best leader. Slate led the charge to overthrow her, and from her gilded tower she fell. Slate plucked her pretty blue crown from her head and put it atop his own, but as soon as it touched his head, it turned tan.

Curious.

Hypnos had to wonder what, exactly, that was about. What was the importance of the color of the flower crowns? No one else seemed bothered by this fact; they were cheering on the introduction of their new King. King Slate, they called for, a new era of prosperity.

Hypnos was intrigued to see what decree Slate would announce.

"Partnerships are important, integral to the survival of our Colony. It has been decided, that every five moons, at least one new couple must be announced. Couples that have been together for five moons will have kits, and then have kits every five moons after that. In strength there is numbers, however; every cat with a mate may make a 1d8 saving throw against death."

And with that, Slate returns to his tower, and Hypnos is left wondering what this all means. He wasn't really one for romance, but he supposed he should start browsing the market.

He'd say Slate was a good candidate, but, he saw how Sophie met her end.

The plants rose against them again.

Hypnos himself was nearly caught in the crossfire, but to his surprise, Mistwalker the Earth Storkatten helped him out of the clutches of the brambles. This was, perhaps, the first time in a long time - at least since Aspen - someone had noticed and acknowledged his existence.

He honestly was beginning to wonder if he was invisible. It wasn't entirely impossible for Trickster Storkies to go invisible, but it was hard, and certainly not passive.

At least, he didn't think it was passive.

Hypnos couldn't get his mind off this cat, now, thanks to that one interaction. Who were they? And, more importantly, why did they save him? He hardly saw them in camp, but they were in camp and not being attacked. So, surely, they must be a member of the Kingdom, right?

He had much to think about as always.

Another bloody day, another hand touches the crown. This time, it's Aspen. Precious Aspen. Hypnos cares deeply for the young cat, and before his eyes he had grown into a proper tom, ready to take on the world and take up the mantle of being a leader. Hypnos could only hope that Aspen did his late parents proud and make something of himself; become a real, true leader.

Still, Hypnos can't help but feel like he's seeing the same pattern repeat over and over. A new paw takes the crown, the crown is bloody and lethal.

Hypnos doesn't envy the cats who take up the duty of being a leader. He can't imagine himself in such a role. He just hopes Aspen lasts longer. If the cat died, well, he wouldn't know what to do.

Hypnos felt like he was finally getting stronger with the turning of the seasons. For the most part, he knew peace under Aspen's first real moon as leader. They'd only lost one cat, but they were lost due to leaving camp alone. Nothing really notable there.

"Look at you," Hypnos hums, moving to sit alongside Aspen. "All grown up, King of a Kingdom of cats now. I remember when you were just a kit."

"Haha, yeah. You were the only cat who'd really interact with me." Aspen laughs, a bit of pain in his voice, but also a bit of affection. "Something about abandoned kits puts people on edge, here." He shakes his head. "That's sad, isn't it?"

"It is." Hypnos sighs, giving a slight nod and looking out over the kingdom. "No one really seems to want to get attached to one another, do they?"

"No." Aspen's voice is weary with grief. "You are the only cat I've ever grown close to."

"Indeed," Hypnos nods. "It is hard to find bonds with..."

"All the death." Aspen finishes the sentence for him.

"....Yeah." Hypnos sighs. "Maybe this will be the turning of the leaf, though."

"We can only hope." Aspen gives a grim nod. His blue-petaled crown moves with his nod, and he blows it out of his eyes.

Things felt alright enough in the camp. It was yet another lovely day and no major deaths. A few cats did go missing, but, no one heard anything about it. Unfortunately, Hypnos felt this was normal. It was the unfortunate truth cats went missing all the time.

At least Aspen is still here. Hypnos isn't sure what he'd do if he lost this cat.

He was painfully aware of the mortality rate of cats in Aspen's position, and he hated it. While Hypnos would love to sleep all day, the weary black cat was starting to force himself to stay awake longer stretches of time. He had to keep an eye on things, keep an eye on Aspen.

Someone had to, because no one else was looking out for the king. Hypnos would take up the mantle.

He approached Rock with a humble request, and the Metal Storkie was happy to provide. An exchange, Hypnos summoned illusions of Rock's late brother Slate, and in turn, Rock provided armor and claw caps for Hypnos. He wasn't much of a fighter, but he was going to learn to be.

He had to, for Aspen's sake.

20. Loyal servants serving the Monarch. The Kingdom's getting loyal. Wicked loyal. Three random cats are now SO loyal and impressive that they forgot how to die - or at least, the Monarch forgets to have them dealt with. If any of them would, for any reason, be exalted, they now simply...don’t do that. But only once. Treat this as an “extra life” of sorts.

Joy, Noelle, Euphoria all get one extra life.

Lore

It had only been a few moons since Slate's decree, but before Hypnos's very eyes, the camp was lively with new kits. Fae and Fiera were wonderful first time mothers, and had given birth to six lovely kits. Hypnos got to watch as Rock and Silver fell for one another - a Metal and an Earth Storkatten pairing was as natural as the rain.

These kits in camp should have made Hypnos happy, but all he could think of was the impending tragic deaths they might face. He tried to stay cheerful, but he could only find solace in knowing that he would learn to protect Aspen with his own two claws.

"So many new cats!" Aspen bubbles next to him, and Hypnos is pulled out of his thoughts. He turns to his friend, and gives him a nod, feigning a smile.

"Yes. It's...nice, isn't it?"

"It sure is." Aspen breathes out a sigh of relief. "With so many new paws, we can start to reinforce the kingdom!"

"That is true." Hypnos points out. His companion was so very smart. "Perhaps we can finally start fighting back against those...creatures that have been showing up."

"Oh yes! We can hope." Aspen remained ever cheerful, in the face of adversity. Hypnos admired that.
