the broken compass
welcome, lost traveller
A friendly wind clan built in and on the cliffs of the plateau's southern edge. Many travellers come and go, though there are also quite a few who choose to stay. But while this clan seems rather ordinary on the surface, not all of its inhabitants are quite what they seem...

You are a traveller, heading to the Compass to see the sights. You can see the imposing entrance gates from where you are currently sitting. Perhaps you should go and enter, though it might be better to read up on the clan first.

> Read the general information.

> Approach the gates.

the clan
the compass as a whole
In your hand is a flyer containing the history and general information surrounding the clan, along with a map of the Plateau and the surrounding sea, on which the Compass' location has been marked. You open the flyer.
While the southernmost cliffs of the Windswept Plateau would be far from anyone's first choice when it comes to picking a place to settle, the Broken Compass has managed to thrive not only on, but in the cliffs as well.

Underneath the surface settlements lies a complex system of tunnels and dens, with over a hundred dragons residing underground. Those living in the very edge of the cliff have a view of the rough seas below, as well as a wooden terrace connected to a ladder system on the cliffside.

These ladders (and bridges) not only connect the terraces to each other and the top layer of the clan, but also lead down to the port, the Broken Compass' main form of income being trade, more specifically the trade of art and finery. Though the sea around cliffs is normally rough and dangerous, shining beacons in the water enchanted with Water and Wind magic alike help keep the waters calm and make sure travellers and merchants arriving by sea don't get lost.

Also inside the flyer are some simple maps of the clan: one for the surface and one for the underground sections.

history
The clan was founded by Faes Sundrop and Oceansoul, two travellers and lovers who left their old home together to find a new place to settle down. When they arrived at a cliff, they were surprised to see it not fully empty: several small buildings stood, though clearly abandoned, along with what appeared to be an odd tunnel leading downwards.
They were the old remains of a clan, though which it was, exactly or what happened to them has remained unknown to this day.

From the bones of the old clan the Broken Compass arose: a haven for travellers and dragons seeking a new start. In the beginning the tunnels remained buried, but when the clan started growing much faster than either founder would've ever expected, they were dug out and expanded upon.

trade
The Compass trades with many clans located on Sornieth's lower hemisphere, not particularly picky about who receives their goods. Their main form of export is in the form of art, artisanal goods like tapestries and statues, though they also ship scholarly materials and the occasional artefact. In addition, they act as a middleman for trades spanning long distances, to give the couriers time to rest and help ensure the safety of goods.

There are a number of small gardens maintained by the Compass' residents and amongst the inhabitants are a number of skilled hunters and fishers, but for the most part the clan relies on trading with other clans and groups to keep up their food supply.

// fiery moths
Most of the trading relations the Compass manages are short-term, but a couple of clans have formed long-term contracts to supply specific materials in exchange for goods, services and treasure from the Compass. One of these is with the Fiery Moths, a Fire clan with a large focus on agriculture.
relations
Aside from a close relation with the Fiery Moths on not only a business but also a personal level, the Compass is not particularly closely entwined with any other draconic clans. That being said, they do have a number of connections, including (but not limited to):

// beastclans (talonok)
With the herald of the first Warrior's Way, along with a number of other efforts to improve relations between Beastclans and dragonkind, the Compass has started contacting and trading with local talonok clans. The raptorik Hazel is currently working alongside courier Candyfloss as part of an ambassador program.

beastclans.png
[ooc lore notes]
Site lore is mostly adhered to, but not treated as gospel - certain aspects may be changed, and personal lore contains a sizeable amount of headcanons.

Official dragon sizes are only followed in terms of small-to-large: exact sizes are skewed. I do not have precise measurements, but the difference between the smallest and largest breeds in-lore is a couple metres at most. Assume the larger breeds have been shrunken down, and the smallest breeds have been upscaled.

Site parentage and offspring lists are ignored unless explicitly stated otherwise - as an example, Diamond does not have children in-lore, and her "child" Dravite is unrelated to her.

This section will eventually be given its own post, further elaborating on these choices, but for now it sits here.

entrance gate
open but not unguarded
Where there is a clan, there is an way inside. The Broken Compass is framed by thin, low walls, meant less as protection from the elements and more as a way to claim the area, with its entrance gate grand and open. A small, unassuming building is placed in between the clan walls and the left side of the gate, a place where the guards can rest and share stories.

The gate is large and grand in contrast to the low, simple walls marking the clan borders. As you approach, you see a statue of a bulky, armoured dragon with an impressive mane, blue crystal glimmering yellow in the sunlight. There's a small building on the left side, squished between the wall and the gate. Aside from the statue placed right in the middle of the entrance, there doesn't appear to be anything stopping you from just walking inside.

One of the clan guards. Passionate about her job, and a powerhouse in battle. Not someone you'd like to cross, but has an almost childlike enthusiasm about her when excited.
In a committed relationship with weaponsmith Zeitgeist.

You go to answer, but the words get stuck in your throat, pinned under the ex-statue's glare. It takes a few tries, but eventually you manage to stutter out that you're a tourist. The ex-statue's, no, the Obelisk's, demeanour changes instantly, and moves aside, giving you a wide, sharp-fanged grin. "Oh, never mind then! Welcome to the Broken Compass! You can go through, don't worry!"

You give her a hesitant glance as you start walking. She nods at you and smiles again, this time showing a lot less teeth. What a strange figure. She was so terrifying, but the moment you said you were visiting she completely changed. Didn't even check to see if you were lying. Which you weren't, but still.

You look back at the gate. There's a purple and orange dragon with an odd silhouette- are those two heads?- in the side building. Unlike the other guard, this one doesn't seem to trust you; they point two claws toward their eyes -the ones on the ram-horned head- and back to you. Guess they make up for the lack of suspicion on the Obelisk's end.

// deuce - dee & sue
An Aberration duo and clan guard(s). Has two sets of small wings, but is flightless. Dee (ram horns) is cynical and sceptical, while Sue (three eyes) is optimistic and scatterbrained. Both of them, however, are merciless when it comes to intruders.

The Fae grabs the map and hands it over to you, humour visible in the curling of his fins. "Don't worry about it. Happens to the best of us." He pauses. "Never seen you around before, though. Are you a tourist?" You nod a bit absent-mindedly, checking to see if your map got damaged. It's an old one, and on the delicate side, but to your relief nothing got torn. The Fae looks over your shoulder at the map, wings fluttering to reach high enough. "Fancy map. My brother's a cartographer, he'd be over the moon at the sight of stuff like that, but I don't really know much about it myself." You chuckle a bit, both enjoying the image of this stranger's brother swooning over it and unsure on how to continue the map-related small-talk. Thankfully, he seems to pick up on the latter fact, and swiftly starts wrapping up the conversation. "I'm Pear, by the way. If you need any tips on the warmest spots in the clan or where you should go grab a snack, I'll be hanging around the square. There's a map of the clan on the board over there, if you need it." He waves as he walks off, and you finally go sit on the bench, opening the flyer you brought with. It seems like there are a bunch of places you could visit from here, but where to first? You instantly start apologising, trying to pick up your map which has since rolled away from you.

It seems like there are a bunch of places you could visit from here, but where to first?

misty market
busy streets, bright faces
Sturdy stores and open stands fill the edges of tiled roads, and labyrinthine paths weave their way between storefronts, countless dragons weaving their through the urban maze like ants through their nest. As the central location for merchants and caterers alike, the market is the only place capable of matching the square's bustling nature.

Current section notes:

misty market - shopping district! describe location, add short descriptions (+ maybe design some logos?) for the shops and link to businesses with their own tab aka the teahouse, inn and bakery (don't add those to the gates directory, just link to the market)

(add the shops with their own tabs at the end of the thread)

library of kings - description, figure out emperor backstory, maybe draw/commission a design for the fates?

could also add possible staff or frequent visitors (or maybe include links to outsiders lore/misc stories in the form of the books there? it's a library so it'd make sense)

if going with the book idea maybe add new posts for worldbuilding and use this page as a directory for those?

the signpost - clan newspaper, figure out what they write, who works there and their jobs. maybe add an article they've written in the past? (could also work for misc stories)

still need to figure out most of the lore here since this is a recent addition.

dravite's workshop - can probably keep as it was before rework, maybe flesh out backstories further (and possibly add banter in between lore/descriptions? give it an informal feel)

maybe also add technology worldbuilding (i.e. progress, which parts of sornieth are more technologically advanced, do phones exist)
