The Starhearts
The Starhearts claim that they’re not a cult. But when your cult activities get you plastered across the morning news under “Arcane Extremists DETONATE BOMBS at Iris University,” you may want to give yourself a realty check.
It was an accident, but that doesn’t help their case. The Starheart spokesperson explained that they were merely constructing the explosives on campus under the supervision of a faculty member, and they planned on bringing the “celestial messages” to the Starwood Strand to “commune with the Cosmic One through stars of their own making”. Instead, something went wrong with the chemicals or the heat or whatnot, and one of them exploded prematurely. That one set off the others, and the chemistry building lit up a torrent of flames and sparks. Sixteen dragons were burned (four of them very badly), and there was no sign that the Arcanist even cared.
The Starhearts were curiously nonchalant about the whole thing. “We are very sorry that our actions have caused harm,” the spokesperson said. “We will be much more careful in the future.” Or in layman’s terms, “we’re sorry, but we’re going to keep doing it.” I suppose it’s difficult to dissuade those who are so convinced of their own rightness. The Starhearts have convinced themselves that if they perform the right rituals, do the right things, plant explosives in just the right places, they can actually call the Arcanist back to earth.
Now, I’m not sure if the Arcanist or any of the eleven ever existed, but that’s not the question I’m concerned with. My question is this: even if the Arcanist could be brought back, what good would it do?

The Trickster's Song
I am Kem the Trickster
as far as you can see,
you'll never find another lad
who's cleverer than me!
I’m faster than a beam of light
I’m louder than a storm
I’m colder than the ice itself
I’m sharper than a thorn
I know every trick and tale
that you could ever see,
for I am Kem the Trickster
and you're no match for me!
[alternate ending]
The gods can hide their rotting sins
behind a lock and key,
but I am Kem the Trickster
and they’re no match for me!
———————————————————————————————
Litsky’s notes: Kem the Trickster is my favorite folk hero. He sings a variation of this song in many of his stories. I just found an old tome containing the story "Kem the Trickster and the Sundial Gems," and although I grew up with this story, the older version is a little different. The last stanza of Kem's song is much harsher than the modern version. My guess is that it was updated to be less sacrilegious and more palatable to hatchlings.

Legacy Eggs
Hatching eggs is a complicated business.
I don’t have any personal experience, of course. Parenthood sounds dreadful and using eggs as currency has always struck me as more trouble than it’s worth. And then I moved to Dragonhome.
The intensity with which Earthflighters regard their legacy eggs is almost frightening. It’s not uncommon for parents to save a few eggs from a clutch to give to their children or grandchildren to hatch, but Earth Flighters take it to the next level. The oldest clans have padded vaults that store eggs that were laid tens of generations ago. There’s a certain status to hatching the oldest egg possible, and even hatching an egg laid by a parent or grandparent is a mark of low rank among the Crystal Court elites.
There have been cases where dragons have lied about how old their eggs are, only to be disproved by hereditary-obsessed Earthflighters who point out inconsistencies in colors and gene patterns. It’s a bit of a mess to be honest, but rather entertaining to watch from a distance.
Dragons of all flights practice legacy hatching to some extent, but not with the same intensity.
And while some dragons fight for the right to hatch old eggs and raise new generation of elitists, other eggs change hands hundreds of times as they are traded or stuffed in the back of the lair until egg prices rise. The beastclans think that trading eggs is barbaric, but since when have dragons ever listened to them?

Shadow's Challenge
Said the Dark to the Light,
“perhaps we might
play at a little game?
I will choose a champion
and you will do the same.
We’ll put them through
a fight or two,
a riddle and a test,
and then we’ll see
for you and me,
who’s children are the best!”
Said Light to Dark,
“a strange remark
for even you must know
my children are unbeatable
and will master every foe.
Challenge them with tricky,
challenge them with might,
there’s nothing new
that you can do
to cover up the light!”
———————————————————————————————
Litsky’s notes: This rhyme was primarily used in oral retellings of the Ballad of the Champions, but it's not included in the ballad itself. Stories about the Elemental Championship probably circulated long before the Ballad was written.
