They have a long history of dealing in alcoholic drinks and their ingredients (mostly fruits and grains), but covertly, they also sell more...addictive and/or toxic substances. [*] Some generations back, however, they ended up antagonizing an equally unsavory but more powerful family (the Bloodblade clan), and their fortunes began declining afterward: clients were influenced to stop buying from them, supply lines were disrupted, some of their establishments were damaged or destroyed, etc. It nearly ruined them financially, and they’re still struggling to regain their former glory. [*] Ermengarde learned all about the family history and decided she hated the Bloodblades — particularly since she grew up liking the finer things in life and realized she could’ve had more if not for [i]those people[/i]! When she heard they’d dwindled down to just one measly descendant, she decided to storm into his castle and just [i]demand[/i] he return what her family was owed. [*] So Ermengarde journeyed up into the Crystalspine Reaches and found...[url=https://www1.flightrising.com/dragon/72021010]this guy[/url]. Who turns out to be a harmless, eccentric dork who doesn’t entirely understand how finances work, but is more than happy to show this loud new [s]intruder[/s] visitor around his moldering old castle. Ermengarde finds she is...not actually averse to chatting with him about non-criminal stuff and being shown around. [*] This is one of those relationships where she keeps on telling herself she hates Baron, and that she married him only to take advantage of his naivete and fully intends to steal all his money someday, [i]eventually, really, for sure[/i]. Nobody is fooled. [*] Genuinely loves her husband and is very protective of him. Despite continually claiming that she has ulterior motives, she is always sweet to him and is enthusiastic about his hobbies. (Said ulterior motives don’t actually exist anymore, and neither does her family care about the ancient feud. It happened ages ago, and it’s not like Baron has enough money left to make dispatching him worth their while.) [*] Has crazy dreams about reviving the Bloodblade family business and making [i]mad bank[/i], just as Baron’s ancestors did all those years ago. [*] Not really a nice lady. They feared the fire less than they feared the disapproval of their leader. If they glanced south, they could see the tent she’d set up her quarters in. Barely—only its roof was visible, just above the bund that encircled the excavation site—but they avoided looking at it as though it too had eyes. And speaking of eyes... “Is this what we’re looking for?” The chief digger lowered his goggles over his face. Through the enchanted lenses, the world was a blur of browns and grays—save for the stones his subordinate held out. They glowed with the brightness of embers... But not as brightly as he had hoped. “They’re not,” he sighed, pushing the goggles back up his brow, “but we’ll keep them.” The crestfallen Wildclaw nodded. She dropped her find into a basket that already held many such gems, all of them polished till they shone like mirrors. All of them, it was said, imbued with an ancient [url=https://www1.flightrising.com/dragon/64326372]necromancer’s[/url] power. The [url=https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/cc/2323941/87#post_52342762]story[/url] of the necromancer was an old one. All the dragons here had heard some variation of it. They’d always regarded it as a fairy tale. A cautionary legend, many scholars said, meant to demonstrate the folly of challenging the Flamecaller. But the Empress had thought differently, and she had divined the place where the necromancer’s castle was thought to once have stood. She had brought her underlings here and told them to dig, and amidst the crumbled stone and occasional magma flue, they’d found various artifacts. There were books that were charred wrecks; others were too thickly caked with earth to be pried open. There were ornaments of gold and silver, half-melted and falling apart. And bones, so many of them, too many carved with disquieting symbols... And every so often, gemstones, in all the colors nature could provide. Some were even amber, and the diggers shuddered as they scooped these up. The story had described how the necromancer had supposedly embedded those stones into his own body. But none of them had that fiery brilliance—that touch of [i]divinity[/i]—the Empress wished to find. And as the days wore on and the diggers found no such magic, dread crept steadily into them. The work had seemed promising at first—surely all these other artifacts and riches would please their mistress!—but they began to understand that that hope had been misplaced. Empress Talanton wanted the beads that the Flamecaller herself had enspelled, and nothing else. Never mind whether or not the old legend was real, if the diggers even believed it. If they failed to find what the Empress desired... A gasp cut the smoke-choked air. Heads turned. The chief digger scampered over to the Spiral, who’d dropped her shovel and was now scraping away the dirt with her gloved hands. “What is it? Did you find his eyes?” “No.” She looked up, her jaw slack with shock. “This is much bigger.” It was, and when the chief digger brought it to the Empress later, he did so with just a smidge of hope. Perhaps this [i]would[/i] suffice. Perhaps then they could all go home... “Did you find the eyes of the necromancer?” The Empress’ cold, quiet voice cut through the darkness of the tent. It took a moment for the chief digger’s vision to adjust: In the dim glow from outside, he first saw the gilt edges of her robe, the cords crisscrossing her chest. Her eyes gleamed above the starry veil she wore. “No,” he said. He couldn’t quite meet her gaze, and he held up his find, using it to shield his view of her. A huge pearl, gleaming with memories.
