They were pretty unsavory folks, the kind of people who would keep a battle going so they could continue selling arms to all the factions involved. And keep making [i]moneeeeyy![/i] [*] I like to think that "Bloodblade" wasn't even the family's original name. They claim it's because some of the weapons they manufactured were made from deep red chalcedony, but really it's just because they thought it made them sound ~kewl~. [*] A few generations before Baron was born, the family began looking into using the magical stones in the Crystalspine Reaches to enhance their weaponry. They set up a new base there and got to work mining, researching, and applying the magic they found. [*] The Arcane magic...didn’t quite agree with them. Or their work. Various projects and facilities started exploding. So did various family members. [*] By the time Baron was born, the family and their business operations were pretty much gone. No new advancements, profits plummeting, clients and staff had already melted away (literally, in some cases). [*] Baron also ended up getting exposed to the weird magic even before he hatched, and it’s made him rather kooky. He’s also younger than he looks. If we’re putting it in human terms, I’d say he’s in his 20s, but looks 10 or even 15 years older. [*] No interest in trying to revitalize the family business. He just likes doddering about in his crumbly old castle, tinkering with contraptions that may or may not be functional. Lives off the vast fortune his ancestors left him, plus a bit of money his mate's family provides. He’s crotchety and erratic, but completely harmless. She’ll occasionally venture closer to more populated areas in search of food. [*] She preys upon travelers, luring them to her lair — which always appears as a black castle at the top of a jagged path, never mind what the terrain [i]really[/i] is like. (She could put it in the middle of the sea if she really wanted to.) [*] Inside the castle, the travelers are greeted by the sight of a magnificent ball and banquet, with plenty of other people in attendance. It’s warm, everything’s so bright, there’s lots of food and drink, and people are just so nice... [*] It’s all fake, of course. Whatever’s inside the castle are just illusions cooked up by Polaris. In reality, the travelers are sprawled on the cold, stone floor, dying of hypothermia as she siphons their delight and dreams away. [*] When she’s completely drained her prey, she and the castle move on, leaving the frozen bodies lying in the snow. [*] She covers her tracks well. Her prey freezes to death, which is pretty par for the course in the Southern Icefield, so their deaths are chalked up to natural causes. It is the account of a librarian, Jacquelin Fraust regarding three strange books found on the shelves of the Hewn City Library.[/i] I took up reading at a young age; perhaps even before I learned to speak. I’ve always believed that books hold a certain power over us. In the entanglement of words, we find ourselves imagining another world or another time. There are endless stories and knowledge stored among the pages, yet sometimes I get the sense that there are other things stored there as well. You see, I’ve been working as a librarian at the Hewn City Library for some time now. It is a simple, yet rewarding position that primarily entails filing, studying, and loaning books. Among our collection, we have nearly any book that one might be interested in, but our library has never harbored any books imbued with magic. Certainly, such texts exist, but the Hewn City library has banned them for many years. In fact, the only imbued books in the Sunbeam Ruins are among those comprising the Radiant Eye’s library or private collections. Over the years, I’ve developed a fairly comprehensive inventory of our books, so I’ll say that it came as a surprise when I found the tome. I could, however, make out a few words scrawled onto the inner cover that appeared to be hand written. “Ex libris: ——”. The name was somehow familiar, but I couldn’t place it. Regardless, the book was clearly imbued with magic so I hastily placed it on the shelf for inter-library transfers with the intention of sending it off to join the Radiant Eye’s collection for further study. I always found myself back in the library at night with that book in my hand. In these dreams I could read the text more clearly and I found that it described the story of a king who attempted to bind a thousand demons to his will. Ultimately, he was unsuccessful and subjected to a thousand curses bestowed by the demons he attempted to enslave. In each dream, I seemed to make it further into the tale and I could not stop myself from continuing to read despite the grueling detail in which the book described each of the king’s tortures. That is when I began to awaken in the night. Often, I found myself experiencing excruciating pain as if my own body were subjected to the same torture from my dream. I never saw any evidence I had been physically harmed, but the pain of mutilation never dissipated even after I had awoken. I noticed around this time that my colleagues, Johnathan and Isaac had started coming into the library less and less. Johnathan seemed exceptionally paranoid and when I asked him if anything was wrong he wouldn’t stop rambling about the insects that had scattered out of a strange, dark tome he’d found on the shelves. He said they were everywhere and wouldn’t leave him be. The explanation I got from Isaac made my heart sink even deeper into despair. He described a black tome, a single golden word engraved onto the cover that read “Almadel”. He said it made him bow before the thing that emerged from between the pages. Isaac looked very tired when he told me this and disclosed that he didn’t sleep much anymore. Not with how ‘that thing’ made him worship it. Perhaps I should have felt more concern for my colleagues, but it was difficult when I found myself in my own predicament. I can tell you that what remained of Isaac and Johnathan was found in the library in the following days. It took a long time to clean up all the insects and I’m not quite certain how Isaac's body had bent into the position that I found it in. As for me, I believe my time left is limited as well. I finally made it to the end of that book in my dreams. I read about the final curse laid upon the king who had somehow survived the torment of nine hundred and ninety nine demons. Father Herald was quite unsettled with this particular account, especially with the knowledge of the bookplate.
