Happy Halloween!
A large hatch chock full of Hunters today. :) Hatchlings follow lore as always. Looking to close up this arc pretty soon.
Keturah met Setara at the gates and caught her up on what they knew of Sixten. "I'm heading to the tunnels shortly," she said. "I don't think there's any of us in fighting shape not trying to get things handled down there."
"Be careful," Setara said. Then she headed down to see Sidney, then Copperlight, and while they both had important items to relate, none were news.
Setara prepared her cohorts for the tunnels below, then followed the threads of irritable spirits. As they walked, Jaquard's presence eased some even before Setara could soothe them. Damask did nothing to help, but he also did nothing to hinder. He simply walked onward, an eager expression on his face in the dim light of their glowstones.
The blackness that met them, however, was thick like tar. Damask shied back. "Trouble," she said. "This isn't Shadowbinder's work."
"The Shade?" Setara asked, fearing the worst.
Jacquard frowned, touching a toe into the blackness like a swimmer testing the water. "Not quite so bleak," she said. "A lesser evil, perhaps."
"Angry," Damask said. "Can't you feel the rage of it?"
"Angry at what, though?" Setara asked.
"Jack," Damask said, turning to his mate. "Let's have some tea."
"Now is hardly the time for tea!" Setara hissed.
"That coatl mentioned others of your ilk down here," Damask said as Jacquard started pulling a kettle from her pack and lighting a fire. "Where are they? I assume this is the only way down here. A dead end is hardly a fitting place to lose people."
"What are you going to do with tea?"
"Wait," Ailbe said, taking a seat at the edge of the blackness. "Wait for it to show its teeth."
Damask grinned, his white fangs reflecting in the light of the glowstones. "Exactly so," he said.
///
The brewing tea filled the air with a pungent herbal scent, which Ailbe mentioned smelled of her home on the Windswept Plateau during the rainy season. Setara thought it smelled of kelp left on the shore.
Either way, Jacquard's focus could not be broken, and she murmured over the leaves, pouring from cup to cup, straining leaves with a lid and filling the final cups with a liquid that shined like the light of the sun.
"Please," she said demurely, her eyes cast towards the floor. She gestured for the others to drink, and Damask and Ailbe knocked theirs back in one gulp.
Setara took up the cup of liquor, its gentle golden glow limning every downy feather on her face like sunset against a stand of trees. It stank of grass, and Jacquard patiently stared at her feet.
"Drink the damned thing, will you?" Damask said. "Then we can get moving."
Setara glanced between the others, then with a nod from Ailbe, she sipped from the cup.
The brew was sharp and bitter, and she almost spat it out in disgust. But there was a mellow chase to it, and a warmth seemed to spread through Setara's whole body, chasing through her capillaries and drawing light into her eyes.
The blackness seemed only deep shadow now, and she looked in wonder to Jacquard, who simply dipped her head in silent acknowledgement.
"Alright, let's go," Damask said.
They walked for some time, Setara and Damask in the front, Ailbe and Jacquard behind. And then they saw the flash of gold of a delicate chain, and Setara could feel the slightest trace of life welling up from the two forms lying in the midst of a deep blackness.
"It's feeding," Damask hissed. He pointed out a line of darkness that Setara could only discern once he showed it to her. "Bright as day," he said, his gossamer-thin wings fluttering with pride. "Will they be alright?"
Setara reached for them, but Ailbe set her hand on Setara's shoulder. "Don't," she whispered. "I've seen things like this before. You risk enraging it and endangering them. Be quick, and be true. That is how you will save them."
They pressed on, though it ate at Setara's heart to leave anyone she could hope to save.
And then she started to hear the hissing whispers. They would not discern into voices, but she could sense the presence, finally, of several spirits. Beside her, Damask laughed quietly to himself. "That's new," he said. "Haven't had one like this before."
"What is it?" she hissed.
"Different than his mum. Where she's a full vessel, he's a cracked vase, and they're leaking out before they're meant to."
Setara stared into the dimness, hoping to see what the coatl saw.
"You're not talking about me while I'm not here, I hope," Sixten's voice cut through ensuing silence. "Setara. Where's your mate? I'd love to have a go with Torch."
"You'll have to be disappointed," Setara said.
Her eyes still lit with the tea's gifts, she moved closer to the depths of the tunnels.
Six's voice laughed, and the whispers echoed them.
@Rahkali - Haha, no worries. :) I do a 1g:1000t ratio, so I'm looking for 75g over CR. Willing to haggle if you're in love but don't have the funds. Can I set you up a CR?
