vIxqJxi.gif ABOUT 2BhOKO8.gif
From time to time, Nature dragons trickle into the Scarred Wasteland, offering a figurative (and sometimes literal) olive branch.

Some seek to apologize and atone to whomever within the Plague flight would accept it. If a single individual from one flight could rupture a treaty, perhaps a single mendicant could restore it.

Some have no inkling of the past and simply wish to know thy enemy - that is, elemental opposite. These idealists wonder whether they are in fact two sides of the same coin with mutual focus on biology.

The edges of the Scarred Wasteland itself quickly sorts out who is just daydreaming and who has the willpower to stay the course.

Instead of succumbing to viruses they remained hearty and robust. Their skin has the appearance of an affliction, but is in fact a beneficial adaptation which protects them from existing and evolving sicknesses. They should not take immunity for granted because new strains constantly emerge seeking to take over a host in unforeseen ways, but falling victim is at least an unlikely occurrence rather than the norm.

Some bear a healthy or mutated vine as a remnant of their tree heritage but affected by the journey through various contaminated landscapes. In the healthy phase, they start out an epiphyte or epibiont - a plant which hosts on another living thing without causing it any harm - and gets its moisture and nutrients from the atmosphere around it.

The mutated version latches multiple shallow roots under scales and into muscle tissue or even a single long taproot deep into its host. The process may feel like itching or come with anesthesia secretions to make the growth harder to detect while in progress. During early discovery of this phenomenon, attempts to detach the mutated vine have testified that it feels like barbs on the roots tear flesh when pulling on the outer vine, discouraging removal. Some braved the pain and damage and bandaged up afterwards. Other hosts decided to wait until they found a healer who could oversee the removal to treat the rips, bleeding and risk of bacterial infection, of course by which point the mutated vine had secured an even more extensive hold. Those subjects decided removal was worse than simply living with it. The mutated version leeches the blood for additional nutrients, but ironically corrects for mineral imbalances and other beneficial functions. In particular for those suffering ketoacidosis due to starvation or malnutrition, the parasite corrects for the acid imbalance.

Finally, the last development is when the mutated vine has integrated with the circulatory system that it functions as auxiliary veins or arteries on the exterior of the scales. In addition to the filtration performed by the mutated vine adaptation, this even more extensive version holds and moves the dragon’s own blood in hollow channels. The cubic volume adds roughly 20% to the original circulatory system volume, meaning a non-injured dragon is able to store and carry 20% more of the blood it produces than otherwise, and an injured dragon that is bleeding out has an extra 20% margin of safety before fainting or perishing. Conversely, they do come with additional risk that any slicing or clawing attacks are more likely to bleed heavily due to vein exposure outside the scales, unless the dragon adds an additional defensive armor layer.
