Biography

Lunala hatched as the youngest one of an all-fathom four-egg litter. The hatchery was absolutely filled with fathoms at that time; not only were Lunala and her siblings there so were older Nils and Leo, only ones not of the water breed were Kaamos and Pilkku, the hatchling-sitter and hatchling doctor respectively. The two ancient males watched over the energetic youth who played and dreamed big for a very good reason. Koshchei, Lunala’s only brother, had hatched with faceted eyes and Lunala herself was very excited by that. She saw it as a blessing from the Arcanist and she was very frustrated by her brother’s attempt to hide his gift. Luckily she was stronger than Koshchei and just dragged him to spotlight whenever he tried to escape.

Lunala really liked to show off her brother first to the older fathoms and then to the coatls and wildclaws once their eggs hatched. At first everyone was excited but their excitement ran out fast and that annoyed the young fathom. She got into an argument way more than once during her short stay in the hatchery when with other hatchlings and when with the adults. By the time it was her time to leave she was so fed up with everyone else that she didn’t need to be asked twice. She dragged her brother, who had stopped right before the door, out and once outside the temple she started to plan where to go first. Vast majority of the clan had not seen Koshchei, and Lunala was excited to show her brother to them. He though was not as excited and decided to escape the moment Lunala had turned her head. She tried to go after him but Pika, the oldest of the four, stopped her.

Lunala was fast to get verbally offensive with her sister not liking how she got to her way while Pika remained calm. She just asked her little sister to let their brother explore the new world in peace. Lunala protested that her brother’s eyes should not remain as secret, everyone needed to know how special the four were. Pika though argued that it could wait and that they should get themselves nests first and foremost, unless Lunala wanted to sleep under the Sun. The younger sister was still annoyed but she understood Pika’s point of view. Besides Koshchei had long since vanished and Lunala doubted she could find him in a still unfamiliar place. She gave up and made her way straight to the clocktower to get the nest thing out of the way. After that was done she went to explore the lair.

During her first tour around the lair Lunala passed by a training ground and stopped to look at the training dragons. Rigel was the first to notice the young fathom and he asked if she was one of the new hatchlings. His tone was clearly rhetorical but Lunala answered anyway and bragged how her brother had hatched with faceted eyes. Rubikin just scoffed that nobody cared and Lunala was very offended by that. She asked how the old spiral dared to speak to her like that and the old spiral said she didn’t have special eyes. Lunala argued that she was still special by association and the spiral disagreed. She walked down into the sand-filled crater and challenged the spiral. She would show how special she was. Rubikin welcomed her and Rigel lent his sword to the fathom. Lunala and Rubikin engaged in a duel which the unexperienced fathom lost in no time. Rubikin just said she should know her place before flying away. Rigel picked his sword and left as well after checking if Lunala needed help. She was too angry to accept something like that.

Lunala did a quick visit to the healing offices before heading back into the training ground where she tried to use sword once again. It still didn’t go well and she was getting frustrated. She stopped for the night but she swore to herself she would learn ways of the sword, most out of spite towards Rubikin. She slept poorly in her lonely nest, partly because she had not eaten anything that night, and the next evening she went straight to the cafeteria to fix that. She spent awhile there bragging about her brother to other residents who didn’t care. That annoyed her greatly and she was straight up ordered to leave because she was getting so heated. Once outside she was fast to spot Koshchei and she rushed to her brother.

Lunala had barely reached her brother when she was already asking where he had gone the previous night. Koshchei just said it was none of her business and Lunala disagreed greatly. The older fathom though kept his ground and asked why his sister was so obsessed with his eyes. Lunala didn’t understand how Koshchei didn’t already know the reason; it was because the eyes made him special. The older sibling vocalized his countering claims, which Lunala didn’t bother listening in detail, and once he stopped she pointed out how he should not be afraid to show his blessing.

The conversation about Koshchei’s eyes was not going anywhere and Lunala decided to change the topic. She asked if her brother knew what he would do with his life. Lunala herself was certain she would become a warrior even though she had done terribly the previous night, though Koshchei didn’t need to hear that. The older brother said he hadn’t thought it quite yet and he hadn’t tried anything either. Lunala was annoyed by how her brother seemed to be more interested in hiding, like their middle sister Yaga, and accused Koshchei of being scared. He didn’t deny the claim. Lunala told her brother that he should not be afraid of trying new things and if he didn’t succeed right away he should keep on trying till he succeeded or was convinced it was not for him. That was how she was going to approach her future career. Koshchei remained silent and Lunala came to conclusion that the conversation was over. She told her brother they’d see again and walked towards the training ground. She had stuff to do.

Back in the training ground Lunala had picked up a sword and started practicing with it like she had done the previous night, and like then she was not doing so good. The sword either got stuck to the wooden target or it bounced from it causing her to lose balance. It was frustrating but she refused to back down. That was when Rigel, having walked by, asked if she needed help. Lunala was stubborn and said she would manage herself before getting the sword stuck once again. The mirror watched fathom’s training before he had enough and he walked to Lunala saying she was using her weapon of choice wrong. The fathom was heated up and attempted to hit the smaller dragon who dodged without issues.

Rigel was unbothered by Lunala’s attack attempt and just explained, without Lunala’s consent, that she was using the sword like it was a war hammer. It was meant for slicing or stabbing, not to pummel up the target. Lunala was very annoyed and asked what the mirror knew about sword usage totally forgetting that he used one. Rigel pulled out his sword and sliced the target to demonstrate his point. He then walked to Lunala’s sword hand and asked if he could adjust her hold. She was not thrilled but let the older dragon do so anyway. The mirror fixed the hold and explained that when she swung her sword the blade had to be in same angle as the movement. If it wasn’t the blade would either get stuck and bounce off. After that he asked Lunala to try and she lifted her hand. She glanced to the mirror who asked her to start slowly so she got the angle right. Lunala swung the sword and she managed to cut off a piece of the target. Rigel congratulated the fathom and asked her to practice that. Before he left he also told how to block with sword so she remembered to practice that too, just in case.

During the following nights Lunala spent most of her time in the training ground practicing the noticeable improved motivating her to keep going. When not in the sand-filled crater she was hanging out with the few residents who tolerated her brashness and heard all kind of news and rumors that way. Other times she had a short chat either with Koshchei or Pika, Yaga was never anywhere to be seen even if Lunala had cared about her. Pika had been experimenting with all kinds of jobs though she had yet to settle with one. She though was considering a messenger position after Yaga taught her a spell that allowed her to basically zip massive distances in a blink of an eye. That got Lunala thinking if she should try learning spells to help with her combat as at the moment her battle style didn’t feel special enough.

After meeting with her oldest sister Lunala had gone to think what kind of spells would be useful in battle situations. There were the ones that were of no use and then there were the ones that straight up broke the battle. The latter group interested the novice warrior but she was doubtful that she could cast spells that strong. She had tried few spells during the first nights of adult life and they had been difficult. From that period she remembered the anti-gravity spell and that gave her an idea. Gravity was a bit weird in arcane domain, there were floating islands and water that flew upwards, so as an arcane dragon using anti-gravity spells in combat made sense. Excited Lunala went to refresh her memory about the spell and after that was done she went to experiment. She was able to lift a target to air for a moment but there were two massive problems; she could not focus on spell casting while fighting and the spell only worked on items.

Lunala returned to the library in an attempt to find a spell that affected living beings. The librarian Hanako suggested her to visit Ayla in the magic boutique because she suspected Lunala had better luck with finding what she was after in there. The young warrior was not thrilled by the suggestion because she would need to go through a scary house to reach the shop but she agreed the magic shop would be better place to find spells. She took a deep breath and walked into the dilapidated building where she walked in circles, and screamed at ghosts, before she found a door to the magic boutique and rushed in. Inside she explained her arrival to the shadow ambassador who had an idea of attaching the spell to the weapon so Lunala didn’t need to multitask during battle nor master it beforehand. It was an amazing idea, and expensive one. Sadly the fathom didn’t quite have enough money for purchase and she promised to come back.

Around that time clan’s rangers found three skydancer hatchlings in the wood and that was a big deal in the clan. It was not because October, November and May had been left in the wilderness but because of their parents. Based on genes and breed the rangers figured out their father was clan’s historian Crane and their mother was Sapny, an outlaw mage. The clan was extremely salty about what Sapny and her friend Shadow had done in ancient history and interacting with the duo, usually called “the summoners”, was strictly forbidden. Lunala thought that was a bit extreme and argued a lot over that opinion both inside and outside clan’s courtroom against older residents. When not arguing she took part in clan’s gatherings as one of the less heated up residents, oddly enough, and that allowed her to cumulate enough money to enhance her sword with the spell.

Lunala didn’t really care about the skydancer triplets, although she was interested about the rumor that October and Yaga were dating, and just spent her time in the training ground practicing her new battle tactics. She kept her stance when it came to the ongoing issue and when the clan had a second conference relating to it, the first one was cut short due to the sheer chaos in the courtroom, she voted against punishing Crane and for when it came to skydancers’ right to see their mother. She was in minority during first voting and in majority during second. After the trial she continued her life like nothing had happened.

It didn’t take long before clan was back in chaos mode. First guardian twins Narbiera and Narberia were found being cursed into flowers, then May was found dead and some time after that November followed her sister. The clan was desperate as it tried to find the culprit before more dragons died or were cursed. Meanwhile Lunala was more excited than anything. If the threat came from outside, she could try her battle skills against a real opponent and even if the threat came from inside she could still do that, in theory. The residents scouted the surrounding wood all the while Lunala stayed inside acting as a guard hoping for a chance to show her skills. Sadly the clan was unable to find anything and no one tried to attack the clan either.

Surprisingly the situation was solved by Mariah and her fairy friends. The fairy diplomat had been very dedicated to solving the case, probably because she had been close with all of the victims, and by following October into the wood she had found Yaga who ended up being behind the recent tragedies. She had also killed October and cooked him just before Mariah had arrived to the scene with her fairies. Lunala guessed the motive for the last one was October dumbing her for one of the guardian twins, she didn’t remember which one.

Though the young warrior had been excited about the current situation she was very conflicted by the resolution. Her sister had cursed two, killed three and almost eaten one dragon. She wasn’t that shocked by curses and killing, she had always thought Yaga would do something like that as a shady loner, but trying to eat another dragon was too much even for Lunala and she worried it reflected poorly on her reputation. During the trial she supported capital punishment as she believed that would rid her of ties to a criminal but sadly that was not legal in the clan. Instead the clan decided to exile the cannibal and Lunala watched partly disappointed as her sister was forced to walk to the western side of the wood the clan lived in. Once the fathom had vanished into the wood some older residents turned to look at Silence who followed the freshly exiled dragon. Capital punishment was apparently illegal but sending an assassin after a criminal was alright and that annoyed Lunala greatly.

Lunala was seething and she had to bit her tongue to not lash out on her clan mates. She wanted to hear what happened to her sister. Eventually Silence arrived looking a bit frightened. She didn’t smell like blood. Few residents, among them the leader couple, had waited for mirror’s return and they asked her for a report. Silence shook herself and said the summoners got to Yaga first. Lunala didn’t care to hear what the clan thought about that turn of events, she knew she was angered by the news and went to vent that out at the training ground.

Lunala was frustrated by the double standards the clan seemed to have; interacting with the summoners was strictly forbidden but letting them deal with criminals was allowed because the clan didn’t have guts to do so itself. She had to complain about that to someone and luckily she spotted Koshchei sitting near the clan edge. She sat next to her brother and started to vent. She didn’t spare with words because everyone else was outside hearing range. She kept on going until she noticed Koshchei just staring to the ground, she wasn’t even sure if he had noticed her arrival. She asked if he was alright, and he remained silent. That was when a voice above claimed that a heavy secret weighted on Koshchei’s chest.

Lunala turned to look towards the voice and saw Witchi, clan’s Gossip Queen, sitting on a tree branch. She asked what the old fae meant and she just hinted that all of the deaths might not have been Yaga’s doing. Witchi’s vague and smug attitude annoyed Lunala and she asked what she meant. She had a feeling the little dragon was blaming her brother for the death and she was not having any of that. That was when Koshchei asked for Lunala’s attention. She turned to look at her brother who in turn turned his eyes away. The warrior understood that as admitting the crime and she begged he was lying. Koshchei remained silent.

Witchi decided she had had enough and she started to fly away. Lunala could not let her do that, the secret must not be spread any further. She rose up, pulled out her sword and hit the fae with it. The cut went from under the left arm to under the right leg though it was not deep enough to be lethal. The small dragon fell to the ground and Lunala attempted to pierce her to make sure she was dead. Before she could do that Koshchei stopped her and called her an idiot. That snapped Lunala out of her rage and she realized what she just did. Witchi was Tinker’s, clan’s primary leader, little spy and she would not take it lightly if someone hurt the fae. Some residents had clearly seen what happened and were approaching the scene. Koshchei turned around and ran towards the closest defense sector, the Boneyard, and Lunala followed in hurry.

The Boneyard was the most dangerous of the defense sectors, its guardians attacked anyone going through no matter the reason, and the two fathoms got through the area with few bite marks and hits from flying bones. Once outside Koshchei found the two a hole to hide in and he pulled Lunala there. He held her mouth shut as the pursuers ran past them and once they were gone he pulled her out. As they started to make their way towards south he asked Lunala to stay quiet and she didn’t need to be asked twice. They sneaked to the coast where they dived to the sea and swam to an empty peak where they stopped to rest.

As the two sat on a crystal peak Lunala asked what they did now, and Koshchei had no answer to give. The warrior weighted their options. Returning to the clan or to that area was not an option or else they’d be assassinated, they couldn’t stay in where they were now because the clan might be looking for them and for the same reason they should avoid public roads so they didn’t meet travelling residents. The clan probably put a Wanted notice on them so living peacefully and doing legal work was also out of question. Koshchei pointed out that their only options were either give themselves in or live criminal life. Lunala didn’t want to be imprisoned and chose the latter option. It was not the life she had wanted but she had no options. Her sword would become a weapon of robbery, unless someone wanted to hire a warrior regardless of their criminal status.

Traits

Lunala is an arcane fathom with primarily blue body it having glowing stars and dimmer lines forming constellation-like patterns on both sides, darker wavy lines and hint of purple here and there. Her wings and fins are light purple with pink black-lined patches. Her tail fin is heart-shaped. On her back she has spines that vary between dull and blue and hot pink and sharp. She also has short hot pink spines decorating sides of her necks. From her mother she has inherited a natural blonde mane which is often kept plait. Her legs and arms are shorter than usual and they look even shorter due to her broad-shouldered and muscular body. She has turned her eyes primal to match her brother’s faceted eyes. Functionally they are no different to normal eyes, and the glowing marks vanish when she is asleep.

Though outlaw Lunala thinks highly of her status as a warrior and dresses quite fancy because of that. She wears a golden and sparkling muted purple armor on her chest and hind legs, golden bracelets on her arms, golden lines around her eyes and neck, long golden spikes on her wings and golden rings on her tail. She dresses up lightly to not hide her natural colors and to make moving easier, especially walking and flying for long distances. Magically attached to the tail rings she has a dark swirling cloud that protects a small star in the middle. The star acts as a light and heat source as well an imitation tool. It can also act as a weapon if Lunala is forced to use her tail during combat. The star is blazing hot to touch though arcane dragons are immune to the heat. Her main weapon though is an arcane sword which has been enhanced with an anti-gravity spell. When swung the sword shoots out energy which nullifies target’s gravity for a second and a half. The cooldown of the attack is half a minute.

Lunala is known to be a loud dragon; if it wasn’t for the trees and buildings her speech could have been heard all across the lair. She is very vocal and doesn’t fear to voice her opinions. She tends to speak before she thinks and regularly comes across as extremely direct, rude and hostile. She is also very prone to rising her voice when annoyed. Nicknames and even naughty words are also quite normal for her speech. She has mild Hawaiian accent.

Small pile of pink petals.

Lunala is a brash, impulsive and stubborn dragon who often acts before thinking. She thinks highly of herself and often prioritizes her own status and feelings over everything else. She is often borderline blind to her impact on others and regularly dismisses concerns unless they have direct impact on her. She thinks skills are important to one’s worth and she is willing to spend time and money to get the skills she needs. She can’t admit defeat and if facing something she can’t beat she will try till she beats it, or she buys something to do so though for her that is the last resort. Her determination is quite impressive as being patient is not something someone would say about her. If anything she prefers to get results fast, though getting results slowly is still better than not getting them at all.

Lunala is a social dragon though she is a bit difficult to get along with. She has a bit of an ego and thin skin. She is quite easily offended; impulsive she gets verbal very fast and stubborn she doesn’t back down. She tends to prioritize herself and her own status over others and is generally indifferent towards others’ problems and drama around her, though she enjoys hearing gossips. She sees others below her, outside of very select few, and arguments rarely change her opinion on others. She doesn’t hold grudges that long because she thinks that is lowly of her though she might bring up previous interactions if she thinks that will make the other party feel bad for insulting her. If one argued with her, they should not expect an apology from her as she won’t bend like that. He ego doesn’t let her.

Lunala is accompanied by a wicked smile she calls Cosmog. The little mimic joined her some time after her exile and it acts as a pet of sorts to her. Cosmog is intelligent creature being able to understand speech without problems and it can even read and count. It can’t speak though. It is mischievous and joined Lunala’s group because they let it scare unsuspecting dragons as they rob them for money and food. The pets it gets from its partner dragon also played a part in that decision. To Lunala Cosmog is both a pet and a partner in crime. She doesn’t like how the mimic sometimes plays trick on her but otherwise she is quite fond of the little thing. Hurting the mimic would be a sure way to anger the warrior.

Small pile of pink petals.

Lunala wouldn’t call herself a mage though she knows few spells. She knows the basic anti-gravity and size-changing spells and she knows spells to clean up her armor and hair. Otherwise she is more of a warrior and uses sword as her weapon of choice. Her battle technique is mostly just dancing around the target and cutting them with her sword until they collapse out of exhaustion. Her light armor lets her maneuver around the target easily though due to her size and body build she doesn’t look as graceful as she would like to. It is still very impressive though. Her sword is enchanted to nullify gravity of the target for one and a half seconds and it can do that every half a minute. Lunala is skilled at using the short window of disorientation against her targets to do a lot of damage especially to the normally unacceptable areas. If the sword is not enough Lunala can also use her bare hands and tail to cause damage with the tail decoration causing some additional damage. As a fathom Lunala can breathe underwater but her mane hinders her movement in water and she generally avoids swimming.
