Banish stared down at his nestlings with a mixture of love and dread. His first nest bore two eggs, one cursed, the other not. His attempt at a protection spell was only half effective, and that's not to say that it wasn't just coincidence half his nest was cursed. Tyl urged him to keep the cursed one, saying he could help train her to control her powers. He also decided to let the other stay, at least until he knew for certain she was safe from the curse. He named the cursed one "Akilis", and the one without the curse Tyl named "Zazriel".
But maybe he shouldn't have listened to Tyl. They were words he never thought he'd say until now. His eldest became quiet once she learned of the severity of the curse and just what it entailed. Banish promised to help and protect her. But he was instead met with backlash from his own child. Blaming him for everything, Akilis ran off. Not far, Banish knew. He had seen her resting in a cave. He could only hope that one day, Akilis will forgive him. In secret, though, Akilis talked with her younger nestmate, Zazriel, telling her to fly away as far as her wings could carry her. "Our father is evil," Akilis whispered to Zazriel one night on a stony cliff. "He cursed me. And it's only a matter of time before he does the same to you." Akilis spread her wing, hovering it over Zazriel's back. "Fly. Fly as far as you can. Protect yourself. Make a new name for yourself. Whatever. Just get away from here." Akilis gently nudged her sibling towards the edge of the cliff, urging her to fly. And Zazriel did. She flew. She flew for as long as her wings could take her. Zazriel didn't know the full story of this curse. She and Akilis rarely saw their father, as he was always busy dealing with things only dragons of his power could do. And the curse was a sore subject for their father anyway, especially after Akilis ran off. Questions were a big no. Maybe Zazriel should've stayed and tried one more time to ask, but it was too late. She was already so far from the Forgotten Kingdom, their was no hope of getting back in a reasonable amount of time, especially with the fact she had no food. Maybe one day she'd go back, but for now... She had to run. Akilis stayed back in the cave she now called home. Ever since she learned of the curse her father put on her, she had found solace in the solitude this cave brought her. Nobody really saw her. Dragons could stay outside the cave for days on end and not see a single glimpse of Akilis. She had everything she needed in the cave, after all. A small stream trickled through, and bats that flew in provided enough blood to save her curse's demands. But of course it wouldn't be enough. Besides, it was your father's idea to give you the same curse he had, right? Akilis shook her head as an owl flew into the cave. All because of her father, she had to find a way to get her talons on dragon blood. Her father studied blood magic, but she wouldn't touch it with a stick. The owl dropped a scroll on the desk she had set up out of rocks in the center of the cave, before flying back out. Another target, it seems. She gets up, grabbing the daggers leaning against the wall and making her way to the cave entrance. You could fight him, you know? Claim your revenge against him and protect your sister from the blood curse. Doesn't that sound enticing? Akilis blinked and found herself standing at the edge of the grounds of the Glitched Palace. She backed away, confusion laced on her features. These situations were becoming more and more common, finding herself in random places with seemingly no recollection of ever even moving. She shook her head, trying to rid herself of the oncoming headache, before receding back into the trees. She looked down at the scroll in her talons, reading the info given by her client about her target. He will make great practice before you move on to your father... Akilis tensed. This voice... It never seemed to leave her. It was hard to tell who it belonged to, and she never reached out to it. She couldn't tell if it was male or female. All she knew was that it has to have something to do with her inability to remember how she got places and that it has to be connected to her curse as well. It didn't seem to belong to any dragon she knew as far as she could tell. She chalked it up to her imagination, but it was starting to become too frequent. One day, child... One day... We will meet... And the world will tremble... |
