TALOS
━━━━━━━━━━
Past the Far Edge of fate.

Full name: Talos Heliodoros
Gender: “I’m above such banal things.”
Occupation: Traveling noble
Birthplace: A faraway kingdom, long gone
Likes: Chess, reading, drinking
Dislikes: The cold, spicy food
Playlist: xxx
Owners: The Talos Coalition

A dragon who has been traveling for the very long time, followed by rumors and whispers wherever he goes. He’s a child of light, but the Lightweaver does not hear him. He’s a noble scion, but his house is silent forevermore. All he can do is forge ahead. Luckily, Talos is flanked by friends and loved ones wherever he may land, because he is light.

“Lord Talos.” Charon’s voice rings through the courtyard. She finds Talos sitting at a table in the center, drinking her father’s expensive wine as he reads a book. She comes to a halt by the table, leaning against it. “Mind telling me today where my father has gone off to?”

Talos takes a long hearty sip before he entertains the thought of setting his wine down. He ends up not doing it. “Have I not told you? He’s visiting a fair lady down in the Sunbeam Ruins.”

“Do you realize how little that narrows it down?” Charon pinches her nose, a sharp sigh leaving her. “I just want to know where exactly he is and why he’s doing it. I have a dreadful feeling about it all.”

“Oh, oh honey, you really have very little to worry about,” Talos hums pleasantly, a grin spitting his face. “Yes, it’s an experiment but need I remind you that your father is a smart enough man to stay safe?”

“Sir, with all due respect, I am an experiment between him and an unhinged shade worshipper. I do not trust his judgement in lab partners,” she hisses. She sits down opposite of him. “And aren’t you supposed to answer to my commands?”

“I’m a guest, not one of Vault,” Talos says, taking another long sip, mostly avoiding Charon’s scrutinizing gaze. “But if you want to know so badly, I’ll first correct you. It’s actually a more conventional pairing. As for the actual person he’s visiting, that would be Queen Zinovia Selene.”

“Zinovia Selene? Your sister?”

“Aye,” Talos hums, his eyes fluttering shut in relief. “Dima is bringing all he has to the table. A silver tongue, magical prowess, even a new look at the cost of that beautiful red. A shame really.” He taps his claws against the table. “All to impress her and so he may take along a few children.”

Charon presses her lips into a thin line. “What, are me and my siblings no longer powerful enough then?” She tilts her head, eyes narrowing. “What could he possibly need more powerful heirs for?”

“Girl, do you think I know these things? All I know is that your father has a heavy burden on his shoulders and so do you,” he says, pointing an accusatory finger at her. “Besides, I am not responsible for your parental issues. So pipe down young lady.”

“I’m an adult, thank you very much.” Charon rises from her chair with a great huff. “And funny you should say that because the way you talk down to me you sound just like a father. But at least you gave me the answer I wanted, after much needling.”

Talos rests the rim of his half-empty glass against his lower lip, regarding her. “So you have no more further questions?”

“Not for now,” she hums. Her brief dismay seems to be wavering slowly as she returns his gaze. “You can return to enjoying your vacation…” She pauses. “… I do hope that is not my father’s vintage, Talos.”

“Dima doesn’t need to know,” Talos says, leaning back with a grin that splits his face. “Thieves’ honor?”

Charon visibly deflates, but mirrors his grin. “I was not born to snitch. It’s in my Nature.” She slowly turns. “Have a nice afternoon, lord Talos. Let Eret know if you desire another bottle.”

Talos raises his glass to her as she takes her leave. “So long, thirteenth daughter.” He is left alone, between the bougainvilleas in Dima’s courtyard. His gaze slowly slides skyward.
The sun is right above his head, shining down into the canyon. Despite moving across the sea of a Thousand Currents for the sake of novelty, he still finds a hole in the ground to live in. This time he even went and dug it. He takes another sip.

His mind, his power, wanders far out towards the Sunbeam ruins. It’s home, and how easy it is to find its scents, it’s sounds, the way the grass used to rustle under his feet. It takes only a moment until he finds Dima, sitting on a terrace looking out over the sea. For a moment, the man looks thoughtful. Then he grins, turning his head to where he knows Talos is watching from with his ethereal mind’s eye.

“I can feel that, Tallie. Stooped down to peeping now?”

Talos chuffs, the response bringing a smile to his face. “As safe as I thought you would be then,” he murmurs to himself. He closes his eyes, the vision fading from his mind. “Come back soon, friend. It’s too quiet when you’re gone.”

“What are You doing in my dress?”

“… Lounging?” Talos responds. Ereshkigal had muttered the question, uncharacteristically quiet for her boisterous self. She had not moved from the doorway to the inn bedroom either.
Talos took the liberty of readjusting his legs, currently propped up on a table. The large balcony windows were ajar, letting in the warm evening breeze that whipped through the little port, Lanternlea bright on the horizon. “… I’m wearing it because it fits and the color is lovely on me.”

Ereshkigal finally unpeels her nails from the doorway. She struts over to the chair opposite of Talos, collapsing into it. “You could’ve asked. The only reason it fits is because I enchanted it.” She pouts. “If you grabbed any other than that one, I’d be out of a beautiful dress, you buffoon.”

“I’d buy you another.” His eyes light up as he grins. “Don’t you want to be spoiled, little scion?”

Ereshkigal’s face scrunches up. “When I proposed to rendezvous on your way to Kismet, I didn’t ask to be mocked. Our unborn children are sitting on the shelf and I can take them with me.”

Talos’ gaze momentarily trails off to the rock-encrusted eggs perched in a little basket in the wardrobe. “To answer your first question, I simply haven’t worn a dress in a bit. I never did care for gender, but exploring it was never something that I had the space for at home.” He pushes his hair back. “I feel comfortable with you. Perhaps against my better judgment. But… Somewhere I know you would not think less of me.”

Ereshkigal peers down at her nails, deep in thought. Slowly she reaches out to lay her hand on Talos’ bare leg for lack of a hand to hold. “You’re right about that. Again, you could’ve asked.” She manages a smile. “I wish these things could stay trysts, but regrettably you have a dark side and it’s made me fond of you.”

“And you-“ He carefully pulls his legs back and leans forward to pick up her hand. “-Are kinder down than you let on just as well.”

Her brow pinches into a bona fide valley this time. “There are plenty that would disagree with you. Dima, for one. Some child I don’t recall, failed experiment that he was.” She doesn’t pull her hand away. “I’m not going to stop doing these things. I still don’t have my chosen one. The ends justify the means.”

“I think if you simply used that silver tongue more that people would willingly let you tear them apart,” Talos remarks. “It’s for the greater good, ultimately. But you have to convince them of it. You don’t have to rip it out of their unwilling bodies.”

“You have it easy, your family’s entire purpose has been to keep the Shade in check, with a special talent for talking it into submission. Mine watches some dusty, dangerous ruins, courtesy of lady Naomi’s temper tantrum.” She lays her head on the table. She only lifts it as Talos kisses her knuckles. “… You are talking me into submission, you conniving minx.”

Talos’ smile broadens. “You like it.”

“I do like it. It’s insufferable.” She finally pulls her hand back. It’s in favor of rising from her seat so she can stand next to Talos. She steals a quick kiss. “Marry me, if you like me enough to manipulate me.”

“You jest, but I would happily take you for a wife,” he murmurs. He stares up at her for a long moment. Ereshkigal’s gaze has turned steely, fists balled at her sides. “So?”

“… I’ll need to think about it.” She touches her red-painted lips. “I can have an answer for you by our next meeting. And there will be one.”

Talos’ gaze wanders to the window. Ereshkigal can’t quite see his face. “Very well. Even That is an answer in itself.”
