Elano was born dead. When his siblings took their first breaths he was already peering into the Beyond. He was resurrected by his mother but those five minutes he spent peeking into the realm of the dead affected him greatly.

First he was scared to see the beings that didn’t seem to be nothing but shadows. Memories of dragons that had already passed but still lingered on. They tried to speak to Elano and he was so afraid and didn’t understand why others didn’t see them. His parents thought that his unfortunate start at life had damaged his mind. Elano is just a bit different, they used to say.

Because being different makes you usually an outcast Elano tried to hide the fact he could see ghosts as he was growing up. It did take a toll on him — wearing a mask just so others feel more comfortable is exhausting — and he turned into an adult that liked to be alone. He never truly was (the shadows played around him, whispering things) but in the eyes of others he was a loner.

Elano thought his whole life would be spent alone until he met Iara. The shadows around him stopped dancing and flocked to her. Something about her seemed to bring ease even to Elano’s own mind. Like the first time he knew someone would accept him as he was. Meeting Iara was finding home and safe harbor for the first time in the world and Elano knew they would spend the rest of their lives together.

And when the Beyond would call him home, he knew Iara would be there to guide him through that journey too.
