Biography
The Novelist
Rohmer is a gentle soul with soft steps and an even softer voice. He's pragmatic and flexible, but rather withdrawn, preferring to keep his thoughts to himself. If one met him in public, one might think him rather boring. Inoffensive, but boring. Rohmer politely volleys questions with non-answers and other dragons' interest with milquetoast validation. Those who just want to talk about themselves find him pleasant. Those who want genuine connection wander away after a while, looking for something more satisfying than the blank canvas Rohmer offers the world. Or try to crack him open, which leads to him fading from their life.
This makes sense if you've met Carolina. Rohmer genuinely doesn't think anything he says, does, thinks, or feels matters at all. Getting consistently shouted down growing up, no matter how correct he actually was, broke him a bit. If he didn't have feelings or opinions or tastes of his own, they couldn't be criticized, and he couldn't be made to feel like dirt for them. His mother counts him among the sweetest of her children.
Fortunately, Rohmer had an outlet in the form of a diary he hid deep within his lair, underneath a heavy piece of furniture. At first, it was just a place to dump his feelings, but eventually it evolved into a place he could make entirely his own. Drawings, moodboards, and stories he didn't feel safe expressing aloud. The walls of his lair remained bare, but the diary (and its later iterations) became a repository of Rohmer's escapism. The stories grew more complex over time, but always had a throughline of corrupt politics, the protagonist being picked up by friends at their lowest, and an oblivious king making merry while his kingdom crumbles around him.
Most of Rohmer's villains have avian theming.
Publishing wasn't an easy decision, and at first the copy-editing process hurt his heart, but he had to make a living. For some reason he couldn't fathom, people loved what he wrote. It took him a while to get good, of course, but people responded well to the feelings and dark subject matter. An unpleasant side effect of success was having to meet fans, however. Rohmer hated it, and the fans found him underwhelming, especially as he didn't care to open up.
Once he gained some renown in the writing world, Rohmer started getting marriage and nesting proposals from a veritable tide of coatl women rolling over Sornieth. He didn't understand, and (thankfully) didn't dig any further into it, but he had no interest in anyone who only knew his work. Rohmer made the decision right then that he'd never, ever date a fan of any persuasion.
Nobody was more surprised than Rohmer when he finally found love in the form of a spider-farmer from the Tangled Wood. Manom only liked stories with light themes and happy endings, and as such, had barely heard of Rohmer's work. They met at a homesteading workshop Rohmer attended. Manom was outspoken and hard to read, but seemed to prefer listening over speaking, and only spoke with authority on subjects she had expertise in. She handled her creepy crawlies so delicately, using one of her shed feathers to coax them into position. "They're scared. They don't want to hurt you. Would you like it if a giant the size of a god picked you up with no warning?" Rohmer fell in love on sight. He was uncharacteristically bold asking her out afterward. She was uncharacteristically open to the idea.
Their first date was unlike anything Rohmer had ever experienced. Manom didn't speak much, and when he tried to deflect her questions, her response was a simple "If you're not ready, that's okay." After a while, he realized that she was deliberately making space for him in the conversation. Rohmer had never met anyone like her. He was entranced. He was terrified. He had to see her again, but she wasn't sold on a second date. "I want a man who can meet his own needs so he has room for mine."
Rohmer did what any sane man would do: he booked himself into therapy and asked her out again six months later once he had a few coping skills built up. The second date went much better. He was able to tell her he didn't like coffee, and became emboldened when she just told him she could see why. She enjoyed it when he called her "pretty," rather than creepy or haunting. The relationship built slowly, but the two are extremely good for each other, and build each other's confidence in many ways. Manom actually proposed to him, a fact that still warms Rohmer's heart.
Every child of his is raised with love and openness. Rohmer listens to them, talks with them, tries to understand them, and treats them all with unconditional positive regard. He's no longer oblivious to the rather... convoluted... nature of his family tree, but he makes sure his kids are until they grow up. Rohmer makes sure his father remains oblivious when he and Manom take the grandkids to visit. He also makes it very clear that Carolina is not allowed to argue with them or she'll never see him or any of his kids again. Manom is extremely proud of his progress.
