Biography

The Spider-Farmer

There is a demand in basically every corner of Sornieth for high-quality silks. Traditionally, this demand is met with silkworm silk, but lots of high quality specialty garments that require extra strength or suppleness call for spider silk. Manom became interested in rearing spiders for textiles when she was a hatchling. A visiting dignitary to her Clan gave her a ribbon made of the stuff, and soon after, her parents allowed her to raise a few silk spiders. They were a bit baffled, but always supportive, even from a young age.

Manom split her young life between traditional education during school hours and devouring everything she could about her spiders in her off time. She spoke with silk farmers, weavers, and tailors, eventually ending up with an internship to a prominent silk farmer in the Gladeveins. Despite her workaholic nature and single-minded career focus, Manom's parents made absolutely sure she took time to socialize with other hatchlings. She might have resented it at the time, but Manom is grateful for it in adulthood. She has a small social circle, but all of her friends are lifelong.

Nobody was surprised when Manom struck out on her own relatively early. Fortunately for her, another spider-farmer was looking to retire with no heirs, and she was able to buy out a lot of his stock. For a while, she floated on the reputation of her mentor, but her own personal taste in breeding stock soon lent her a reputation in her own right. Manom didn't hold back when her opinions were asked for, but she earned a reputation for being a knowledge sponge. Some other folks in her industry began to shut her out, as she liked to pull knowledge and techniques from absolutely everywhere, but she was just as free with her knowledge as she was keen to acquire more.

As she was able to scale up production and automate some tasks, Manom found herself with a bit of free time, which she used to teach homesteaders how to start small spider farms of their own. Nobody was more shocked than she when she found love in the form of an apparently famous novelist she'd barely heard of from the Viridian Labyrinth. She'd had men swoon over her before, but there was something doofy and sincere about him she particularly liked. Manom hadn't ever really had time for a partner, but for some reason, she felt compelled to accept when he asked her out.

Their first date was an unmitigated disaster. Manom wasn't looking for a project, and she initially gave the whole thing up as a bad idea. Oh well, these things happened. But 6 months later, she got a letter asking her for a do-over. Rohmer had taken her words to heart and gone to therapy. The do-over went much better, and she had to admit, she loved the way he complimented her. Rohmer was the kind of guy who scooted wild spiders out windows and liked hearing about her interests. It took a while to build the relationship, but Manom was glad for the extra care they took with it. Eventually, she realized that there was nobody else she'd rather spend her life with and proposed.

Manom is an attentive mother. Not super warm and fuzzy, but she makes sure their children know they're loved. She stands beside her husband in protecting her children from both the extremely weird parts of Rohmer's family and her mother-in-law. Manom doesn't have anything bad to say about most people, but she could watch Carolina being bodily thrown into the Great Furnace and feel nothing but satisfaction. Even if Rohmer wants contact, even if he forgives her down the line, Manom will always hold a grudge against anyone who hurts her beloved husband.
