'have you had any more dreams of memories from these 'previous lives' of yours?' they asked. there was a lack of curiosity about them, no upward inflection to announce their words as a question, no uncertainty to indicate they did not already know the answer to their question. to them he was nothing more than a collection of skills, a pawn to be strategically manipulated on their gameboard, a tool that they allowed to exist until he outlived his use. 'no.' he lied and he kept the ghosts of his past from showing in his eyes.

the city was asleep. darkness softened and blurred the shapes below, sharp edges into bleeding watercolor, empty concrete streets and an absence of the hum of machinery. from his perch high above - seated, balanced, on the chilled metal of a rail that wrapped around a rooftop garden - he could see the warm glow of cyan and magenta, vermillion and violet neon lights in the distance. in the silence, he embraced the comfort of solitude, knowing that his haven of tranquility was as fleeting as the shroud of darkness.

he could remember it as clearly as he saw his reflection in the mirror; his hands waving animatedly to accompany a story, a blush as he nearly knocked levi's cup over. a tentative smile when he awaited levi's reaction, excitement when he managed to draw a smile from levi. the patient way he waited for levi to finish signing his words before he’d answer. levi had never met someone quite like it before, someone who cherished the pleasure of others enough to devote themselves to trying to brighten a solemn boy’s day.
