the darkness was overwhelming. it reigned, silent and eternal. all-encompassing. no matter the direction - or, perhaps, within it all was directionless. it was a beast that devoured with dispassionate impartiality, a hunter that approached with a steady, unwavering gait. it claimed, it erased, and in its wake it left a void of uncertainty, of the unknown, of how deep its depths truly reached. yet, right as the scales tipped and despair threatened to consume the final whispers of hope, he opened his eyes to the first light of dawn.

do i have a home? he wondered. his gaze traveled between faces that he didn't recognize anymore. strangers that seemed familiar and friends that felt unknown. they moved with an ease that came only from familiarity - repetition over years, knowledge ingrained from their ancestors. they spoke the words that he expected to hear - longed to, even, after going so long without them. yet underneath it all something was different. distant. uncomfortable. maybe it was not them that had changed irreversibly - maybe it was him.
