Born to a small clan near the Reedcliff Ascent, Azrael's clan was destroyed on the day he was to become an adult in his clan by Plague Reavers and enslaved by them for five years, earning three parallel scars from right shoulder to his left side at the bottom of his rib-cage from the Reaver-band's leader, Ulkair.
Shortly after this, he was sold to another Plague clan who he convinced to take the treasure they'd paid for him back from the Reavers. During the resulting battle, Azrael killed Ulkair in combat through a combination of low cunning and sheer ferocity. In the aftermath of the battle, the Plague clan that had brought him took him in as a full member. He stayed with them for a further three years, before leaving them to go wandering, winding up in the Starfall Isles and encountering Brudigan, a distinguished Fae Scholar of the Astra Psykanna Clan.
This meeting was the start of an ongoing partnership between Azrael and Brudigan's Psykanna Enclave.
After several odd-jobs Azrael helped the Psykanna with in the capacity of hired help and learning to harness the power of the Wind in combat, Azrael journeyed back to the Windswept Plateau and became a mercenary, formally swearing to wipe out clans like the Plague Reavers that had murdered his family at a shrine dedicated to the Windsinger.

In the course of his career as a mercenary, Azrael had numerous further dealings with the Astra Psykanna, notably introducing the Water Mirror Reshaki to Bruddigan, the former being so enthused with the latter she became his apprentice and assistant in order to hone her telepathic ability instead of her more sporadic fits of prescience.

Shortly after this, while searching for a gem known as the Naga's eye, he met the Fire Wildclaw Smith Fereon, who proved instrumental in the recovery of the gem and who became a reliable source of information and occasional help on harder jobs, as well as a fast friend.

During a misadventure in the Tangled Wood, Azrael encountered a devious Pearlcatcher called Gulmour,-and a somewhat unique one, in that he'd ensorcelled his pearl into a Umbra Wolf called Garm, that was fanatically devoted to him,-who lead him out of the Woods for the price of helping him sabotage a trap set by another clan of Shadow dragons with the purpose of extorting them.
The temporary partnership proved successful and the two parted on friendly terms with one another and hoped to work together again.

However, his past still haunted him:
He was afflicted by nightmares of his family's demise and for nearly twenty years after the event, had no idea if his childhood friend and sweetheart, Val,-a kindhearted, tart-tongued Guardian with a talent for magic,-had successfully escaped the slaughter.
He discovered the truth during his efforts alongside the Winterling clan and his allies to eradicate a Fire clan that was actively ensorcelling and enslaving dragons near the fringes of the Ashfall Wastes.
