Biography

Bell

Shhh, I just got all the hatchlings to take a nap. Don't make any loud noises unless you want to read them ten more bedtime stories.

Bell was not always a member of his current clan, and in fact spent much of his life as part of another. But when their leader went to serve the Windsinger, and no one else felt up to the task of taking on the role, the clan disbanded, the various members setting out alone or in small groups to seek their fortune. Bell had been an accomplished warrior of the clan, and on the verge of setting off on a Search for his Charge, so he felt confident enough to make his way alone. Somewhere out in the Windswept Plateau, he knew a new clan and a Charge waited for him to find them. So with a bittersweet feeling, he bid his old clanmates and the old lair goodbye, and set out to find a new place for himself.

Bell wandered with no great sense of urgency, knowing that he would find what he sought when the time was right. Although many guardians feel a sense of urgency accompanying their Search, Bell felt a sense that whatever he was looking for lay safe and watched over, waiting for him to find it and take up that mantle. And yet, at the same time, he felt a growing sense of anticipation, as though he was getting closer and closer to his goal. But one day, quite suddenly, his sense of peaceful waiting was shattered. Though the day seemed like any of the others before it, there was a sense of urgency that hadn't been there before, and he found himself hurrying towards something, although he didn't know what. All he knew was that something had changed, and he needed to find what he sought quickly before anything bad happened to it.

He found what he'd been seeking, a young hatchling old enough to have wandered away by himself but still too young to be out alone wandering along the path and sniffling, obviously lost. He felt a sudden sense of paternal protection wash over him, feeling both as though he had found his Charge, and as though he was still waiting for something else. He approached the young dragon, doing his best not to look scary, and gently asked if he was lost. Bell immediately found himself with a hatchling clinging to his leg, sobbing that he was lost and wanted to go home. Bell had never dealt much with the hatchlings of his old clan as one of their warriors, but he found himself surprisingly good at soothing this one, assuring him he would help find his home. He'd found the hatching on the path, so it seemed reasonable to him that he'd probably come straight along it, and then gotten confused when he tried to go back and it branched into several paths. So the two of them followed the path back, Bell giving the younger dragon a ride on his back when he got tired and playing riddle games to distract him, until they came upon a lair.

Bell knocked respectfully at the entrance, until he was greeted by another guardian. Bell barely had time to explain that he had found the little one lost and brought him home before he was being welcomed in. Chrono, as the guardian introduced himself, helped look after the clan while their leader was away traveling, and he had been worried sick about the lost member of their clan. He invited Bell to stay, an invitation echoed by the little one who insisted that his new friend should give him a ride back to the hatchery. Bell happily obliged, and once he brought him there, he was struck with a strong sense of purpose. It came to him in a flash of insight, as he looked at the clan's other hatchlings gathered round to greet their lost friend and the new arrival, that this was his Charge, the hatchlings of the clan.

The hatchlings took to him just as much as he took to them. They'd never had such a good playmate, since Bell was big enough for them to climb all over, to swing on his tail, and cling to his legs to be walked around the room. When Chrono came to offer the guardian a room for the night, a chorus of little voices pleaded with him not to go, and Bell had to reassure them that he would come play with them again the next day. In private, he explained to Chrono that he had found his Charge here, and wished to join the clan. Chrono called his mate Cheyanne, who was part two of the three part leadership, to help make the decision, but it wasn't a hard one. Cheyanne and Chrono welcomed him into their clan. Guardians believe that if a clan has more than one guardian watching over it, that's a sign that it will grow to be large and prosperous, so they took his arrival and his Charge as a good omen for the clan.

Bell was very happy with his new clan, thinking that things couldn't get any better, until his life was turned upside down once again. While he was out examining a nearby bamboo grove, seeing if it was a safe place to take the hatchlings out to play in, he stumbled across a ball of cream and black fur, that turned out to belong to a sleeping tundra, and one of the most beautiful dragons he had ever seen. He spoke gently to waken her, using a soft voice he generally saved for timid hatchlings and doing his best to look harmless, since the last thing he wanted to do was alarm her. He knew he was a stranger to her, after all. He immediately introduced himself, keeping a respectful distance back, and upon learning that she was seeking a clan, asked if he might offer the hospitality of his own to her. His heart leaped when she said yes, and he led her back to the lair. Cheyanne and Chrono officially confirmed his invitation, welcoming DayStorm, for that was her name, into their lair.

Bell had been smitten with the lovely tundra from the moment he saw her, but she was shy and reticent, seeming reluctant to trust. He knew he had fond feelings for her, but the first time he admitted to himself that it might be love was when he saw her in the hatchery, playing with the little ones. When he saw her among the hatchlings who were his charge and one of the most important things in the world to him, his heart skipped a beat. In her expression of happiness and adoration, the gentle way she played with them and looked out for them, it was clear that she cared as much as he did. She looked openly happy, without a single shadow of sadness over her, for the first time he'd seen her, and his heart was lost. He knew that the worst thing to do would be to press his suit too ardently, so he didn't rush, slowly getting to know her with friendly gestures and conversation, helping her with her work in the garden and inviting her to come help him with the hatchlings she so obviously adored. As she got to know him better, she in turn slowly began to open up to him.

When the two announced their intention to officially become mates, DayStorm seemed almost surprised at the warm outpouring of congratulations from the clan, but Bell wasn't. He had always known that the clan was his home, and he could see that DayStorm really believed it now too. She tends the clan's gardens, but she spends so much time in the hatchery with Bell and the little ones that the dragons of the clan joke that his Charge rubbed off on her. However, Bell and DayStorm turned the joke on them when their own eggs hatched, and the two new parents had every reason to spend so much of their time there. Bell is like a father or big brother to every hatchling in the clan, but he and DayStorm make sure that their own hatchlings never feel unloved or neglected. Just like all the clan's young ones, when they've grown up enough to take care of themselves, they are no longer his charge (perhaps for the best, since it can be hard for an adolescent dragon to learn and grow and get into mischief with an anxious guardian hovering over their shoulder at all times) but Bell still has a soft spot in his heart for each and every one of them. Whether they are his own or not, he proudly sees them off to serve their deity or seek new clans if that's their wish, and is something like another father to the ones who remain.

I always feel so lucky, because when I say the whole clan is my family, I really mean it.
