Biography

Spika

"The table is a meeting place, a gathering ground, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction. A person cooking is a person giving: Even the simplest food is a gift."

Spika is the clan's head cook, and has been so since the clan was fairly young. She's in charge of turning what food the clans hunters and gatherers bring home into meals that feed the entire clan. Her cheerful disposition is well known throughout the clan, and they say that when you're feeling sad, Spika's cooking will always cheer you up. Spika puts on a stern act in her kitchen, and anyone trying to sneak a bite of dessert before dinner is going to get their paw smacked, or threatened with the duty of washing the dishes. But she's not as harsh as all that, and always happy to provide to provide someone with a snack when they're hungry, or cook up their favorite foods.

Spika has been with the clan for quite a while, long enough that the gentle cook feels like a motherly figure to many of the dragons and hatchlings, who grew up with her telling them that they had to eat their vegetables (or fish, or insects) if they wanted a treat afterward. It feels to some like she's always been here, although other longstanding members of the clan, including her mate, SnowySky, remember her arrival. The young clan was still getting on its feet, and struggling to figure out how to feed everyone, and to divide the duties of hunting and gathering between each dragon to ensure that there was enough food. Some members were complaining about having to eat bamboo shoots and rabbit day over and over again, but what could they do? Even if it was the same thing day after day, it was what could be found in abundance near their lair, and it was better than going hungry.

Spika had been traveling through Sornieth, in her usual slow and steady manner when she came to the Windswept Plateau. As one who had always enjoyed cooking, she was wandering through the different regions, to learn about the different foods and methods of making them that were unique to each region. Along the way, she collected her favorite recipes and spices. She took great joy in sharing the knowledge with others, and learning from them in return, staying with a clan for several days to a week before moving on to the next. When she heard a certain pearlcatcher wistfully sighing about the lack of variety in their meals, she couldn't just pass by without doing anything. Her expertise was needed here, and it was as good a place as any to stop for a while.

Spika turned up, and promptly made her way into the clan's kitchen as though she belonged there. The other clan members were confused enough to think that maybe she did, each assuming that someone else had invited the newcomer to join their clan. After all, she certainly seemed to know what she was doing. Before long, she was creating meals for the clan that took advantage of what they had been able to gather. No one wanted to complain about it after the first meal was served. Spika had a gift for turning ordinary food, that they'd eaten all their lives and never thought much of, into something special. When their gatherers had a bad day, and couldn't bring home as much, she had recipes that stretched a little into a meal for a whole clan. And she showed that that even things they'd thought they were bored of could be exciting, using spices and cooking styles from other regions that brought out entirely new flavors.

Spika had always thought that good food was one of the most important things to bring a clan together. Seeing all their hard work in digging, hunting, foraging, and catching pay off, coming together over a good meal to talk and grow closer, and staying well fed and healthy... The gifts a cook could give her clan went beyond just the work of preparing the meal. And although she had never thought of settling down before, neither had she even been in a clan where she was needed as much as she was here. It was gratifying, to see how much she really was helping them. She decided to settle down and stay for good. She didn't have to make much of an announcement. The clan had already accepted her and Kai as their beloved cook.

Although she moves at a slow pace, with the help of her familiar Kai, Spika always has everything organized to finish cooking at just the right time. If you go too fast, she always says, you'll make mistakes. If you try to speed up the cooking by turning the heat up, you end up with food that's burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. When she gives cooking lessons, she emphasizes that it all has to happen on its own time. Something gave up its life for your meal, she always tell them, and that life should be treated with respect. What good does it do anything if you rush, and waste or spoil it? She simply takes care to start preparing everything at just the right time, so it's finished exactly when she needs it to be. Her own skills with fire magic, though unimpressive in battle, are perfect for keeping everything cooking at exactly the right temperature. Somehow, she always seems to have a little snack finished up just when a hungry dragon wanders into the kitchen, so her method must work.
