Biography

DayStorm

Home is where the heart is.
584.png6357.png8106.png2043.png61.png

DayStorm has a personality to match her name. Most of the time she's sweet as the day is long, but anyone unlucky enough to get her ire up faces a temper like a storm. It's hard to provoke her anger, but the few times anything has dared to threaten the clan's hatchlings will usually do the trick. DayStorm's main job in the clan is to help tend the gardens that keep the plant eaters fed, which her nature magic makes her particularly well suited for. However, when that's done, she's often found in the hatchery with the hatchlings and young dragons. Part of it is because her mate, Bell, works there attending them, but she also loves the hatchlings as much as he does, and takes great joy in helping take care of them.

DayStorm is normally a cheerful type, but she doesn't like to talk about the clan in which she was born, which she didn't leave by choice. Her old clan had had a long running feud with a Lightning clan, a clash between technologically minded experimenters and traditional nature lovers that had gone on for a very long time. They'd gone back and forth, but the biggest blow to the clan came when they discovered that their Lightning enemies had gone so far as to sneak into their territory in the night and cut down some of their sacred trees. The clan was devastated. Some of them had been growing for hundreds of years, their trunks carved with the marks of many generations of the clan, their branches hung with wreaths for druidic rituals. They were more than just trees, but symbols of the clan's strength and virtue.

Soon accusations began to fly. The guards accused the sentries of not warning them, the sentries accused the guards of not holding their posts, the dragons of the clan accused them all alike. Rumors began to circulate that there was a spy in their midst who had told their rival clan how to sneak in. They were only rumors, but somehow they came to rest on DayStorm. She had the circuit markings that came from Lightning dragons, they whispered. She was secretly on their side. She must have done this. Although the rumors had no proof, they grew, as rumors do, until DayStorm was driven out of the clan. No matter how much she cried and protested that she had always been loyal to them, the doors remained firmly locked, and she was told that she was no longer welcome there.

Daystorm tried to seek a new clan, but even remaining in the Viridian Labyrinth was too painful, the familiar surroundings always reminding her that the dragons she had thought were her beloved clan had turned her out without proof. She wandered, seeking someplace that could feel like home again, and fearing she would never find it. But one day, she found herself in the Windswept Plateau. The rolling green steppes and the lush bamboo forests were familiar enough to feel home-like to her, but different enough not to carry any sad memories. She could breathe in the scent of the gentle breezes, and they smelled like a fresh start. Feeling hopeful, she curled up in the cool shelter of a small bamboo grove to rest from her travels.

She was awoken by a strange voice, asking her if she was alright. When she opened her eyes, there was a massive guardian towering over her. Her first thought was to be frightened, but only for a moment. The guardian's voice was soft and gentle, almost like one would use to speak to a scared hatchling, as though he was trying very hard not to alarm her. And though he bore scars like a warrior, he was taking care not to loom over her threateningly, standing a short distance away, with his tail curled over his paws in a way that it would trip him if he tried to pounce. When she greeted him cautiously, he introduced himself as Bell, and asked why she was sleeping out in the open. When he learned she had no clan or no place to stay, he immediately offered the hospitality of his own clan, for as long as she wished, and led her back to their lair.

DayStorm wasn't sure whether she wanted to stay at first, but she quickly fell in love with the clan. What convinced her most was her visit to the clan's hatchery. She had always had a particularly strong nurturing side, even for a Nature dragon, and she adored playing with and taking care of hatchlings. Bell, whose job she learned was to take care of the hatchery, and whose charge was all the hatchlings of the clan, welcomed her help whenever she arrived. He sometimes even came to help her in the gardens when she worked, saying that he ought to repay her kind assistance. Even though he had no magic to help them grow like she did, he gladly aided her in weeding or digging new beds, making pleasant conversation while he did. It was nice to have someone to talk to while she worked, especially after being lonely for so long.

Daystorm found it hard to put her trust in her new clanmembers for a long time. The feelings of betrayal from her own clan still hurt, and what if it happened again? What if she grew to trust in her new clan, and they too decided to throw her out? She didn't think her heart could bear the pain of it a second time. She felt safe loving the hatchlings with all her heart because they were too young and innocent to know about treachery and unkindness, and the worst they could do to her was throw tantrums or try to sneak out after bedtime. But Bell seemed to be trying especially hard to prove that he, and the rest of the clan, were worthy of her trust, and didn't want to hurt her. He invited her to come help him, and in turn came to help her in her garden, even more often, talking about this and that, telling her about the clan, and asking her about herself. The more they worked together and got to know each other, the closer they grew, and soon DayStorm was visiting the hatchery as much to see Bell as the hatchlings.

The others of the clan watched Bell's slow, careful courtship happily, doing their best not to scare DayStorm off or let either of them know, so it came as no surprise when the two officially became mates. If DayStorm still had any doubts about her new clan, the warmth and joy they all obviously felt for her washed them away. She didn't feel like she had to worry bout being abandoned anymore. She had a wonderful new home, a beloved mate, and a clan who treated her like family, and she was very happy. Adding to her joy, she has raised a number of her own hatchlings with Bell, and happily watched them grow up to find their own places in the world. Wherever they go, she makes sure they know that she will always be proud of him, and that should they wish to come back, they will always have a home ready and waiting to welcome them.
