The ridgeback sighed contentedly, staring out at the field he had sat down in. His back rested against the massive willow, its branches swaying in the breeze as he enjoyed a moment of quiet. Next to him Mura also gazed out, though he did not sit. His eyes were ever present, ever watching like a wary shepherd staring out at their flock.

“You’re going to give yourself a panic episode if you don’t relax.” Lamont spoke, his voice always carrying a bit of a good natured tease under it. Mura hummed a non-committal reply, then sat. Lamont couldn’t help the little smirk on his face, knowing for once he had won.

“It’s been quiet lately,” Mura mused. Lamont could almost hear the ‘too quiet’ undertone, left unspoken but always on the guardian’s mind.

“We should enjoy it, then,” Lamont suggested. Mura protected them all with blood and tooth and claw. Lamont did too, always having Mura’s back, but he also did it in other ways. Like gentle words, playful gestures, and an ever-aware gaze honed to pick up on those delicate and subtle inclinations.

Mura sighed, relenting further, and joining Lamont to rest against the tree. After a moment of quiet, Lamont’s wings itched slightly and he rubbed at them. Sometimes a phantom pain or a reminder of their presence would pester him, and he’d adjust and go back about his thoughts or actions. He’d grown used to their disuse, swift on the ground and capable of holding his own without taking to the skies, unlike Mura who could streak upwards like a banshee and chase after an airborne enemy with ease. He wasn’t jealous of this, in fact he admired the way Mura looked when he did such things.

Lamont was young when his wings were damaged, young enough to not remember how but old enough to know he had not been born that way. Or perhaps Lamont did know how they were damaged, but never said anything when asked. Instead he would simply smile, shrug, and change the topic.

Despite this, Lamont yearned to take to the skies, his wings outstretched and regal, wind dragging upward and around him as he cut through the air. It was this desire that drove him to wander, seeking answers to how to heal them. He traveled many different clans and territories all over Sornieth, finding himself experiencing the good, the bad, and sometimes the beautiful. He saw long green pastures of soft grass, swirling pools of lava, and eventually, a shaded land and a glen with one lone dragon.

Like many who had entered this land, Lamont did not stay long within its territory. At least, not at first. He came there as he had for every place he had stopped, seeking anyone who might be able to help him with healing his wings. This territory was protected well by one dragon, a guardian named Mura. He was in the midst of a battle with those who threatened to take the territory from him, and Lamont, as he had for countless others, jumped into action to help. The pair seemed to fit seamlessly together, complementing one another’s movements as they fought against those that threatened to take the territory by force. Afterward Lamont considered staying, finding that he enjoyed the time he had spent battling with Mura, but inevitably he had to leave. He had seen Mura take to the sky once and, like a majestic being, plummet to the ground to take out a group of beasts that had cornered them. It felt good to work alongside him, but Lamont had to continue.

“On your way, then?” Mura asked him, watching as the dragon stared out toward the edge of the territory. Lamont hummed.

“Yes, I still have much to work on.” he mused, turning a wry smile to the guardian, the smile growing wider when Mura merely quirked a corner of his mouth. “Try not to die eh?” Mura snorted a laugh, his quiet goodbye. Lamont knew then that he would come back and see him once his wings were better.

Lamont found himself at a vast dragon city where intellects and geniuses flocked. It was here that he came across a tinkerer that had found a way to make him fly again. Lamont had always thought that his wings were beyond repair, incapable of being used ever, but thanks to this genius dragon, flight was given back to them. A special material was infused with his wings, pressing electrical conduits into the flesh that brought blue currents of lightning through each nerve. The first time Lamont took flight it felt as though he had been given a freedom he never knew he had, and did not mind even a little when he quickly crashed back down. His wings worked, and he was joyous all the same.

There was something to say about how the first place Lamont thought to go was back to that clan in the shadow lands, and to Mura.

Only, Mura wasn’t there.

At least, Lamont could tell he wasn’t for now. At first it brought him a flare of panic, fearful that the other dragon succumbed to some vicious fight he could’ve helped in. But the land was quiet, and no battle had raged there recently. He still felt Mura’s presence, and when he looked up at the skies his wings tingled, a sensation that told him that the dragon would return.

Time progressed slowly, then quickly as Lamont retaught himself how to use his wings. They were powerful, but he was unused to the way it felt to be in the air. He had to learn where his center of balance was, and how to properly carry his weight with both wings. It was a long process, often leaving him in pain as he nursed a sprain or scratches, but he continued to learn how to use them properly till he could take to the sky with little to no issue. He had even found a way to utilize them in battle, reminiscent of the way that his old friend had. The wings continued to dazzle, to grow strong and capable for Lamont.

Now able to fly as if he had naturally been born with the gift, Lamont took to the skies with the intention of flying wherever his heart took him. He needed something new to experience, after a long time of wandering, but instead chose that quiet territory of Mura’s. He didn’t know what he would find there, whether it was just a battle for old time’s sake or even a reclamation from a different clan. Lamont descended down from where he had flown, settling in the grass and staring at the sight that greeted him. A smile crept onto his face, warm and elated at the sight.

Mura greeted him in a way that felt proper, for him. Lamont chuckled, watching realization settle onto his features. He was different - changed - but still the guardian he had known.

“Hello, Mura. It’s been some time.”

~x~

A confident dragon who'd be willing to show himself - well, all but his entire face - to the world of Sorneith, Lamont's name is known both in the tightest knit of dragon social circles and gatherings of warriors in the coliseum. Despite the cloak hiding his eyes, his expression unreadable, he is hindered not by his choice in fashion.

Approaching others he found intriguing was a specialty of his, after all - though none would have guessed he'd end up as Mura's partner given such a drastic difference between their demeanors. Though, when others may perhaps find Lamont's true appearance somewhat strange, Mura admires what Lamont makes such an effort to hide.
