For over 40 years, humanity has been at war against a monstrous alien race known as the Nephilim. Once Ace joined humanity’s ranks as a mech pilot, they quickly began turning the tide of war in their favour. Victory followed victory, and the world was sure they'd end everything in just a few years' time.

Ace has co-parented Contralto's daughter, Bubbles, ever since Contralto found her as an orphaned child in a ruined city. She took an immediate shining to Ace and they were delighted to entertain her, occasionally carrying her into the mech hangars to gawk at the storeys-tall fighting machines. She begged them to let her fly in one, so against Contralto's wishes, they snuck her out for a short flight.

That same night, Ace invited Contralto out for drinks and showed them into a private room. They couldn't contain themself from gushing to Contralto over their daughter's wide-eyed wonder and intense laser focus, a far cry from her usual distractible self. She'd so clearly just had a life-changing experience that Ace was genuinely surprised when Contralto took the news poorly. Although it bothered Contralto, Ace discovered Bubbles' aptitude for piloting; in their eyes, there wasn't anything to apologize for.

Once, following disastrous mech failure, Ace and another pilot got trapped behind Nephilim lines. They crossed paths with a family of civilian Nephilim who screamed in terror and ran from them. Though it could've been resolved peacefully, HQ dropped an atomizer on the entire civilian settlement to guarantee their safe recovery. The experience haunted Ace and, several weeks later, they took their mech off the radar and vanished into the night. What they saw changed them forever.

Immediately upon their return, they were arrested and nearly court martialed for their stunt. Ace refused to divulge where they'd gone or what they'd seen. The war effort suffered immensely from their absence so they were allowed to fly again under strict surveillance and business seemed to return to normal, but they quietly bided their time forging the most calculated plan they've ever had to execute.

On a particular day when everything could fall into place, they gathered the only uncertainties in their plan - four of their most trusted squadron mates, including Contralto and their daughter - and asked them to steal their mechs with them at midnight. Revealing their full plans would risk execution for treason so they could only trust the four would follow without turning them in.

They counted down the hours outside in a space suit, pondering the azure speck of planet Earth in the distance. When the time came, they entered the hangar, walked past their gathered squadron mates without a word, and got into their mech. They waited, their heart in their throat and an unfamiliar mix of fear and longing tangled in their chest - Please don’t make me have to live with leaving you all behind.

At midnight, five mechs vanished from the radar without a trace.

Isn't it delightful how a character can exist simply through
the ways they've shaped the narrative around them? :))

I don't think Ace actually spoke at all during the three hours of gameplay but they're still so,,,,
[gestures wildly and then scrunches the aether up into a crinkled ball and gives it a lil smooch]
noble but full of faults and charismatic but callous and just. aaarrghhhh!!! what a cool character
