An astronomer and an astrologer are an unusual pair, but Pickering and Leavitt make it work by both being uncommonly academic. Surrounded by seas of treatises and articles, their hatchlings learn to thrive on a healthy diet of organized chaos with a sprinkling of absolute awe for the universe.

With their parents teaching them the individual stars in each constellation and the finest points of a well-crafted rebuttal statement, these children are well-prepared for a life devoted to learning about something. Some choose to follow their mother’s scientific bent, and others are led down the more mystic path of their father, but all of them can be found on a cloudless night recounting the stories of the stars.

More mystic than either her parents or her clutch-sisters, Astraea peered into the night sky and came away with the certainty that the Lightweaver and the Shadowbinder were a matched pair, to be worshipped together as sisters instead of as rivals. So much strife, she thought, was born from the idea that these two hated each other, and good could be done if they could come together, as in the deep night sky spangled with bright stars. As much as gods are entities in their own right in Sornieth, Astraea was convinced that their worshippers had to hold some sway with them. Perhaps change could be made in the mortal realm, with the flights coming together in harmony, instead of constant conflict. Maybe Astraea herself can be the one to inspire that change.
