Tecla
The Lacemaker
"Goodness, it's always so much cloth for larger species...." Tecla's family were proper nomads, wandering most of the continent. They left family where ever they went, a sibling with the Tidelord, another to the Plaguebringer. The constant traveling wore on the family bonds though, and it wasn't long before Tecla's parents split. She grew up feeling alone despite being surrounded by family, moreso because she didn't feel at home in her body. Surrounded by other guardians, she couldn't let anyone know that she didn't feel the Call like the rest of them, like she was oversized and tied to the ground. Taking a false charge fooled family and mate, but she is so tired of pretending. She came hoping the Lightweaver would help. None of the others did, for reasons above her knowledge. (One cannot simply say they didn't care. That would be wrong.) It takes her a while to notice perhaps, but as she takes her small hoard on the road she feels the sun shining on her scales. Her burden feels heavier and her eyes start to close and she rests, only to wake up tinier and feeling freer. When a border guard fae flares excitedly at her, she starts to realize how much she'll need to adjust to her new body. Perhaps she'll stay here awhile. She was petrified during the assault, the old Guardian instincts roaring to charge those threatening her clan. Dwarfed by a world that suddenly felt too large, she felt Enishi grab her paw and pull her into the tunnels. The dysphoria left her shaking in the dark until her eyes refocused. She caught Enishi staring and remembered to crest-flare and fin-flap rapidly surprisefearagitation. He in turn patted the air in a motion he told her resembles building a fae hive comfortstabilize. She shuffles closer to him, staring up at the ceiling in a way she never could as a guardian. A trip to the market, encouraged by Coralee, gives her the last push out of her dysphoric slump. The newest fashion covering every clothing booth and on every stunning socialite is lace with gorgeous cloth roses, in yellow and blue and red. Eos admires a piece before holding it up to her small companion. "This is gorgeous, but I could never make something so delicate. Too small for my claws to weave." It gets Tecla thinking. She did some sewing as a guardian, though never anything so fancy; shoes for when her family traveled to the Icefields, hats for the sunnier climes. Surely she could learn a new method. It took a while to find someone willing to teach their newly-fashionable skill, but she did eventually enroll in a class and wow, lace making was a lot more difficult than she thought. But she was right, a guardian could never have done this but a fae's hands were just right, so she threw herself into her new hobby. Spiderwebs of thread and pleated piles of cloth soon littered her lair and Enishi was patient with it, even if he was exasperated with the mess. It takes her months, but soon she is wrapped in delicate black lace with plumes of red roses. She feels gorgeous. |
