Willow, divine heir of Calypso and first clan leader of her blood, was well-loved by everyone, despite his unstable temperament and zealous behavior near the end of his reign. His eagerness to lead the clan properly and the pressure of his position, as well as the curse on him that was caused inadvertently by Sugar's impact on reality, led him to become delusional and obsessed with perfection. He would often, due to his mental state, commit questionable acts for the sake of the clan, and then be overcome with guilt and self-loathing when he came to his senses. This led to a cycle that ultimately ended in his suicide, as his delusions focused towards his own wrong-doings, and he realized that he himself was having a negative impact on the clan, which was unforgivable to him. Desperate to get rid of himself, but needing to provide the clan with a leader to replace him, he hired the harlot Lilyanna to assist him in providing an heir for the clan. It was prophesied that the chosen heir would be female, so out of his three kin, Krallasi, Iris, and Anastasia, Iris inherited the role of leader, being the eldest female. He threw himself from the cliff of the cave lair, his body crushed by the impact on the beach below, shortly after his kin were born.

Although Calanthe's rule temporarily freed the clan from the curse on the Haru/Calypso bloodline while still providing an heir with Calypso's divinity, she did not foresee that breeding with her mate, Erebus, would have such devastating effects as it did. The indirect union of Haru/Calypso's blood, which had been inadvertently cursed by the alteration in reality that took place after Sugar's sacrifice, resulted in a reversal of the curse, as well as the sacrifice itself, as the functions of reality were reset to accommodate. So, although Sugar was given his soul back, in return, the clan lair collapsed in an earthquake during the night, as fated, crushing and killing all dragons who lived there. Though, instead, it was Calanthe who would have to make a great sacrifice for the fate of the clan this time.

Calanthe and her supporting ethereals then knew that they must submit to the death that was fated for the clan, but that they could ease this fate by transforming the clan and its members into ethereals, at the cost of Calanthe's divine and ethereal status, and therefore, her soul, so that they could all live together on the ethereal plane. This meant, though, that Calanthe would have to stay behind on Sornieth, left without a soul, but with the ability to send anyone who desired so to live with the clan as an ethereal.
