Diseased Fungus nXEQOnP.png Mycena Mushroom
"Trespassing dragon - hear me now,
A curse I place upon your brow.
Respect the shroom both white and red,
For now one grows upon your head!"
IPKczWq.png
Unsurprisingly, this dragon was not born with a mushroom for a head, and her name as a hatchling had not been Toadcap (though if it had her parents would have been right on the money.) Both name and fungi came about when she had left home and was living with friends in the wildwoods. Always curious but rather careless, Toadie loved exploring the ivy-strewn hollows of the forest. Warned by friends and family to stay away from these mossy grottos as they were frequently inhabited by beastclan, the skydancer had never seen any and didn't fear the dark places among the thickets.

While gathering mushrooms in a clearing that had rings of lichen-covered pebbles, the unobservant dragon unwittingly picked a very irate fungi sage. It rapped Toadie smartly on the muzzle with its tiny staff and placed a curse on her for disturbing the sacred shrines of the fungi people. In a puff of green smoke the skydancer's head was turned into a large toadstool, growing straight from her neck which had taken on a rubbery stalk-like appearance. Almost hidden, two small dark eyes peered from the spotty surface, and when she tried to talk a flap opened under the cap among the delicate gills, the voice that emanated oddly thick and softened.

Returning to the lair for help, Toadie immediately sensed it was dangerous to be around other plant-eating dragons, whose mouths had begun to involuntarily water upon seeing her. Miserable, she sought refuge in the marshes as the humidity there stopped her spongy cap from drying out. The skydancer sat despairingly among the reeds and allowed the frogs to perch on her head to keep it moist. Sighing deeply with frills rippling, Toadie stayed there until she was discovered the next day by a towering ridgeback who almost picked her by accident. He was a swamp shaman, a dragon who had become part of the landscape and even had living plants growing on his scales and wings.

Muskeg, though surprised at Toadcap's appearance, knew much about the temperaments of fungi sages and assured her that she would be cured if she could prove herself to be a true friend of nature. To help Toadie achieve this the sympathetic ridgeback offered to teach her about the plants and wildlife, though he warned that she must sincerely open herself to the experience and let nature touch her heart. The skydancer agreed - relieved to have a friend who accepted her and was willing to give her a chance - and most importantly wouldn't try to sauté her head in butter. Muskeg affectionately nicknamed his pal 'Toadcap', and welcomed the young newcomer into his boggy home.

Bonded by a mutual desire to become closer to the natural world, Muskeg and Toadie have become good companions and live at peace among the flora and fauna of the swamps and trees. So far the mushroom curse is still in effect, though Toadcap could swear some of her gills have started to feel a little feathery, and now and again one of the white spots on her cap almost looks like the orb of a skydancer. It seems likely that the spell will wear off with her continued efforts to understand and respect the wildlife of Sornieth, and when it does Toadie knows she will never forget the lessons that it taught her, especially to never - under any circumstances - offend magical fungi...

Respect the shroom both white and red,
For now one grows upon your head.
A reminder to look before you pick..
Some fungi will make you more than sick.
This piece of wisdom I'll pass to thee:
Learn to cherish bird, beast and tree,
With open eyes and willing heart,
Then my spell shall perhaps depart."
