The Swamp Dragon

A strange and eccentric dragon, Muskeg the shaman lives in a swamp on the outskirts of a small forest. He tends to the bogs, cultivating the plants and caring for the creatures that dwell in the murky pools. The ridgeback is a fervent believer that all plants and animals have a right to live, even the dangerous and destructive ones. He insists on letting everything in his domain grow strong and unchecked, even if it has a detrimental affect on other lifeforms. "Such is the nature of Nature" he says simply if challenged.

The shaman's beliefs are not always shared by his neighbours, however. Muskeg's large rafflesia patches attract great swarms of biting flies in the summer, which sometimes spread parasites to the woodland inhabitants, and the strangling vines that he allows to twist freely through the glades and into the forest choke the young saplings that have been planted there by the forest ranger, Mallorn. This causes frequent conflict between the two dragons, both of the Nature flight but with very different philosophies. Mallorn finds the ridgeback's love for strange and unusual plants rather unsettling, much like his appearance...

Muskeg's back is covered in stinking corpse flowers that have seeded themselves on his moist, scaley hide, and the insect wings and bird skulls that he finds and adorns himself with often have bits of their former owners still attached. But while other dragons tend to avoid the bizarre-looking shaman, the creatures of the marsh flock to him. Frogs and tickbirds often perch on the ridgeback's sharp spines, snapping up the bugs that are attracted to his unpleasant smell, and snakes wind themselves around his horns, basking in the sunlight. Muskeg doesn't mind that at all, he's proud to be a living part of the swamp that he loves.
