The waters running through the thick trees always fascinated Glyph. It curved around the thick roots and splashed over rocks and pebbles, leading down and away from the manor into the darkness. For years, the river kept the young hatchling occupied as his parents worried themselves about problems unconcerning him. Something about a large monster and running a whole kingdom, but at this point, Glyph was more concerned about the monster under his bed. It was one of these moments in which Glyph found a new runoff leading into a new part of the forest. A small little clearing let way for the water to weakly rush through, leaving just enough space for an oversized cat to crawl through. Or maybe even…. Athens shuffled through old parchment and dried paper, looking for letters from years ago, ones that he had collected and packed. His keepsakes and memories. Every once in a while, he suffered a glance through the old memories, the ones that stabbed him through the heart and wrenched the knife out with a twist. Every once in a while, he enjoyed the pain that it gave him, just to reminisce. Just for a while. Out of nowhere, Chell burst into his study, light from the hallway spilling into the room and encasing his study in a warm yellow light. She was sobbing, her face stained with wet tears as she shouted for him, saying that he was missing, she couldn’t find him, that he was gone. After a few minutes of calming her down and trying to ask what was happening, Chell said three words that made the Imperial’s blood run cold. “Glyph is missing.” The moon was high in the sky by the time the soldiers of the Royal Guard returned. However, it was not in their favour. The young Jewel solemnly handed them a small object, no bigger than the palm of her hand. It was Glyph’s glasses, the rim broken and the glass cracked. The other guards behind her shook their heads, indicating that they too had no luck with the search of the lost dragon. Athens felt nothing, but he could see his fingers trembling slightly in his peripherals. His hands and feet were cold, and the world around him spun, tilting as if gravity had been reversed and turned into a whirlpool. He felt his arm move out without his brain knowing it, gently grabbing the glasses and bringing it towards him. His hands were shaking. It felt frail between his fingers, like a small twig, dried and ready to snap at any moment. His hands were shaking. Behind him, he heard Chell screaming, falling to her knees and wailing to the heavens. His hands were shaking. Distant footsteps came running, indicating his other kids were coming, wondering what all the fuss was about. Why wouldn’t his hands stop shaking? The next thing Athens knew, he had burst through the front door, the glasses gone from his hand. He knew not where he had put it, if it was utterly destroyed now, where he was going, what he was doing. He could hear the guards behind him calling his name, pleading for him to come back. He did not. Instead, through the darkness of the Foxfire Bramble, he lurched through the thorns and the thick barrier of harsh branches, losing the moonlight behind him as he ran through the deep thicket. Branches snapped as thorns caught on his wings and tail, but he didn’t slow down, didn’t even think. He just kept running, screaming, shouting for his son, for Glyph. The sun had risen when Chell heard the door open. She ran downstairs from their shared bedroom, hoping to see Glyph riding on his father’s back like he always did when he was tired, curled up safely on her mate’s back. Athens was dirty, covered in cuts and bruises. He refused to show her his face. Instead, he just limped past her, leaving her alone at the front of the house as the sun started to peek through the opening of the thorns, leaving the front yard of the manor basking in a golden light. The stone version of Glyph looked wrong. The carver did their best, but it just wasn’t the same. There was no life in its eyes, the mouth was turned all wrong. It was the farthest thing from their middle son… and yet, it was all they had. Athens told the guards to move it to where Jewel had found the glasses. It was the only place he knew to put it. Chell said nothing; she hadn’t for a long time, not since the glasses had been found, the glasses she wouldn’t let go of. She kept it clutched in her hands tightly, so tight he wondered how it hadn’t broken even more in her grip. Athens just kept close to her, hoping his presence was enough without her using words. His eyes wandered from the statue to the inscription etched under it, written hastily yet, somehow, elegantly. The sun hit it perfectly, allowing the words to stand out in contrast compared to the dark stone. Glyph the Lost. |
