Biography
x |
Athens serves as the accountant for the clan, taking careful stock of inventory and food stores, as well as riches. He is the only one in the clan with the keys to the vault, which he guards with his life. Athens is withdrawn and distrustful at first, and prefers to take a logical approach to any matter. However, he has shed his shell for Chell, becoming not only her husband but also most trusted advisor and loyal friend. But what Athens hides from everyone is a devastating fear of loss and abandonment. He can't stand the thought of losing anything important. It's been years since he lost Glyph, and many years more since his reputation was ruined. But he's ensuring that he loses nothing else- because deep down, Athens knows he'll fall apart if he does. |

Athens claws and feet scampered through the dimly lit halls, splashing up water from the little pools that had arranged themselves in the divots of the firm gravel. Torches flew past him as angered shouting and more splashing bounced off the narrow stone walls. Breaths caught in his throat as he struggled to keep the pace he was at, to not trip, to keep one foot in front of the other at all times, for if he didn’t, it was his head on the line. Making a sharp left, he hoped that his map was taking him the right way; he certainly didn’t want to get lost in these catacombs. He hadn’t had enough time to memorise the map to be confident in his directions, but right now, his goal was to get as far away from his friends as possible. Get as far from his friends as possible. That’s not something Athens thought he would ever have to say in his life, let alone now. He should have been at home, or at the tavern, or with his family; why was he here? Underneath the earth, an outlaw for a crime he didn’t even know he committed. Since when was he plotting against the royal family? On what grounds did they even think- His feet launched from under him as flecks of dirt flew into the air and his face planted straight into the mud. He had slipped, and he cursed himself for zoning out at such a crucial moment. He scrambled to his feet once more, and as he did, he felt the air around his tail move. Risking a glance around, he saw an orange clawed hand fall away, inches from grabbing him. Yelping, he sprinted forward again, trying desperately to keep his breaths from being too shaky. Tears sprung to his eyes as the adrenaline kept his muscles moving; his legs were about to give out, but he knew he couldn’t stop. Not yet. Not for a long, long time. He turned another corner, the ceiling above him getting slightly higher; he wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not. He had never been down this part of the tunnel system before, so that wasn’t a very good sign either. Sure enough, the light ahead of him revealed a closed off brick wall. He could feel his heart fall down to his stomach as blood drained from his face. The wall was getting closer and closer, and he didn’t know what to do. There were too many of them for him to turn around and fight. His energy was draining fast. He had to act quick. He had to act- Like a spry hatchling, Athens jumped forward onto the wall ahead of him, planting his feet firmly on the discoloured grey bricks. They were slimy and cold, but had enough friction for his feet to hold onto. Spinning around, he launched off the wall, flying above the handful of guards chasing him. Like a scene in a book, time slowed down. The young dragon could see their faces. The look on them, the shock, the sheer awe. Some even lowered their weapons and torches just for a better view. If he wasn’t so terrified, he’d be laughing in their faces. Maybe in another life, they would be laughing with him. His landing wasn’t so graceful, but he managed to cling onto the wet ground without face planting a second time. Running back the direction he came from, he saw the intersection he had made the wrong turn at; he cursed himself under his breath and ran the correct way this time, hearing the footsteps catch back up with him slowly but surely after his daring parkour act. He had to let out a laugh, just a short one, as he saw sunlight ahead. He rushed through the unlocked gate, slamming it behind him and running forward without a look back. The Foxfire Bramble was silent. Even the air felt still, as if time had slowed down. No bird chirped, no cricket made a chirp. Athens would have thought he’d gone deaf if he couldn’t hear his own panting. Thorns scratched at his scales, leaving gashes in between some of them. Slowing down, he held his breath to listen for footsteps following him, but there was nothing. Now, all he had to do was find out where to go. All he had to do was survive. |
