"Cold be hand and heart and bone,
and cold be sleep under stone:
never more to wake on stony bed,
never, till the Sun fails and the Moon is dead.
In the black wind the stars shall die,
and still on gold here let them lie,
till the dark lord lifts his hand
over dead sea and withered land."

These are the dread words whispered from a voice of frozen iron that greet all those who dare disturb the tomb of Borremose. Brought back into the land of the living by the reckless magic of a grieving Earth dragon, the fae and the other lost souls pulled from the underworld were left in bewilderment and dismay at their reemergence into Sornieth. Some chose to follow a spirit guide, hoping to find a way back to the great beyond, while others decided to stay and continue with their second chance at life.

Borremose's first existence had ended in fear and violence. Killed thousands of years ago in a ritual sacrifice to appease early gods, the fae was dressed in finery, wrapped in cloth and weighed down in a peat bog, his body then preserved for centuries. When the Earth spell summoned him, Borremose was lifted from the depths of the swamp; the skin that hung from his exposed bones was leathery and tanned from exposure to natural acids, and he was clothed in rags and tarnished jewellery. Borremose was overcome with the primal emotions he had felt at the point of his death, caught in an echo of horror and brutality.

His mind in turmoil, the wretched creature refused to leave his tomb, claiming the marshland and its hidden grottos as his own. The place is now known as the Barrow-Downs, and Borremose has become a wight; stalking the graves and mausoleums of the Cairnstone Reaches, protecting them from robbers and relic hunters. Forgotten treasures and mouldering antiquities are all that Borremose has left, and he guards them viciously, absorbing the life force of his victims and laying them to rest with the other dead, deep in the dank hollows of the barrows...

Fun fact: his name and backstory are inspired by the barrow-wights of Middle Earth, and bog bodies.
